  • The Banks of Newfoundland sets out the picture of a hard Western Ocean crossing before the days of steam. The song describes a rough passage on route from Liverpool to New York. The ships carried emigrants and merchants. The sailors had it rough but it wasn’t exactly pleasant below decks in a gale, locked away with the animals, sea sickness all around you and the odd corpse.
Oh you Western Ocean labouring men, I would have you all beware,
When you’re aboard the packet-ships, no dungaree jumpers wear,
But get yourself a monkey coat and keep it close to hand
For there blows some cold Northwesters on the Banks of the Newfoundland
    [ Roud 1812 ; Laws K25 ; Ballad Index LK25 ; Mudcat 17059 , 44529 ; trad.]

Somehow this sounds much like The Star of the Couny Down. Does it not? Should it?
    Still, I love it!
