- The Banks of Newfoundland sets out the picture of a hard Western Ocean crossing before the days of steam. The song describes a rough passage on route from Liverpool to New York. The ships carried emigrants and merchants. The sailors had it rough but it wasn’t exactly pleasant below decks in a gale, locked away with the animals, sea sickness all around you and the odd corpse.
Oh you Western Ocean labouring men, I would have you all beware,
When you’re aboard the packet-ships, no dungaree jumpers wear,
But get yourself a monkey coat and keep it close to hand
For there blows some cold Northwesters on the Banks of the Newfoundland

Beautiful shanty. Thanks
THIS is how it should sound.
Somehow this sounds much like The Star of the Couny Down. Does it not? Should it?
Still, I love it!
