  • We hear you - you're in need of a new fingerstyle line to show off with over the festive period. It's natural - you put all this hard work into becoming an acoustic guitar wizard, it's only fair that your friends and family hear the fruits of your labor.
If you're looking to impress, this gorgeously emotive line from Christian Lee Hutson's Talk should do the trick nicely. Whipping this one out it will transport anyone lucky enough to be in the room with you to a dreamy and magical place - a place they'll only be able to reach again by hearing the sweet nectar of your playing.

Sick Riffs is a Guitar World video series designed to help guitarists affected by the coronavirus. Self-isolating players around the world have each filmed a lesson where they teach you one of their own guitar riffs, up close and personal. If you dig the lesson, we encourage you to buy music and merch from the artist or stream their music.

christian is such an incredibly talented guitarist and writer. i saw him open for samia a few weeks ago and i didn't realize a guitar could play so many notes at once.

I worded my last comment incorrectly. I like his finger picking. There is a beauty in it's basic style. Also, I really like the way he presents himself. He is a very admirable & likable person. I wish him the greatest inspiration & good fortune. Vince James

this is a simple song (relative to his other work, probably why he picked this one for a tutorial), but his other stuff is kind of a clinic on doing Nick Drake-style finger picking in modern pop music. Check out Strawberry Lemonade or his cover of Just Like Heaven, plays through basically the whole melody while chording, not just walking bass. Reminds me a lot of Josh Turner, but I think his core songwriting ability (in terms of the roots of the song, not arrangement) is even better. I don't know if all of his songs could stand on their own as guitar compositions, but definitely some of them can, and his songwriting is very Paul Simon-esque which is something that's missing from pop music imo.
Original comment was a little mean spirited, but I agree if someone was like "this guy is the best finger-picker, you gotta check him out" and then showed me this video I'd be kinda petty too lol.
EDIT: By Josh Turner I mean Joshua Lee Turner, the fingerstyle player on RUclips, not the country artist lol. I don't think that guy's a very advanced guitarist.

As shy amateur songwriters, we've become somewhat obsessed by him.
Is he really like this, or is he doing an Extreme Diffidence act to pull the birds?
I think this is what he's like.
Firstly,.I heard about him via The Staves, who say he is.
Also,.I like his little air quotes around "riff" and "baseline", as if he finds such terms too AC/DC but hasn't got a better alternative.

I mean, I wasn't exactly expecting him to be jumping for joy while doing a tutorial. I think this was fine. Seemed pretty neutral to me.

That comment illustrates perfectly how little you know about what you're talking about. Listen to any of his songs, he's an absolutely brilliant player... Probably best not to make such comments on a tutorial.
Also why does it matter how 'difficult' it is? It's beautiful and people want to learn it.
