I hope this whole investment in infrastructure is not in vain, and they persevere with it. The reign of the motor vehicle is over. I definitely don't think the reign of the the motor vehicle is over, especially here in the US. It's just the beginning of it evolving into something different. Electric, autonomous, and other forms of transportation are going to continue to grow until we stop traveling as a species. That being said, I sure hope bike infrastructure continues to grow, cycling becomes a more popular form of exercise and transportation, and attitudes towards cyclists turns positive.
One of my favourite changes (I don't think it's that new def been a year or two) is those traffic lights that have a separate signal for cyclists. You get a lovely head start to get going/clip in whatever before Vin Diesel or whoever at the lights wildly accelerates into the next bit of traffic feel a lot safer having that buffer to get going and for all the cyclists waiting to get in a nice line in lane before everyone else comes in doing their worst.
Agree; this, and protection at junctions - particularly at right hand turns and in right hand lanes - is what's needed rather than miles and miles of utterly useless pens along left hand lanes.
This is so well put together. The U.K. government investing in people’s healthy lifestyles such as this is a far better use of money than just telling children they are fat. Bonus is this will also save lives and the environment.
One just needs to visit Amsterdam/Copenhagen to see their infastructure - envy of the world. In the UK its thr drivers attitude to cyclists is the hardest thing to change.
I cycle off road, I wouldn't want to share the road with cars etc. - our roads weren't designed for that. The newer roads have to be built to consider cyclist and have lanes etc. Do the 'prima donna' road cyclists use them? No - they still insist on using the main road because they have this vision in their heads that they're Chris Froome wearing the yellow jersey and that every second counts and the bike lane will slow them down. Maybe (some) cyclists should also adjust their attitude to vehicle drivers because they act very self entitled. Just my opinion.
It is getting better for cyclists, even in the US. I've been cycling since the 70's, even being female, drivers would purposefully try to run me off the road, and throw stuff.
The little section from 0:38 to 1:00 was really lovely! Would love to see more videos that are like that - chill, POV footage cycling through London :)
this is really encouraging, I really wish south east london could be better, it's miles behind the places in this video. I live on a residential street in Forest Hill and have drivers barrelling up and down it at double the speed limit all day, every day.
Would love to see an update to this video. Contemplating moving to London from the US next year and haven't cycled in London since 2015 so curious how it has changed.
Love this. I grew up in West Dulwich and rode my bike to Pimlico in the early 1990s to get to school, using Railton Road on my route. I would have loved that cycleway. Vauxhall Cross at rush hour in the early 90s was a scary place to be on a bike.
Calum is so passionate about LCC, just the way he tells his story. Glad changes are happening in the city of London. Toronto, Canada is slowly seeing this move. Other populated cities needs to follow suit. Thanks Francis for documenting.
Yet again you are following my life. The south London section, especially the Dulwich area where I taught at Alleyn's. Good to see anywhere near the south circular becoming cycling friendly.
US city councils should watch this video. I'd love it if Boston made some more changes like this. Well done Calum and thanks for putting this video out, Francis.
A very knowledgeable guy. Good to hear dynamic thinking to solve the problem of separation of vehicles and cycles rather than painting lanes and thinking job done. We need this round all major cities in the uk
This is genuinely inspiring, and seems to be a bigger-than-average step in the right direction. That said, the foot is still hovering mid air, and needs people like Calum to hold people accountable. Great episode, thanks Francis!
What a superb organisation, and they seem really well represented by Callum. He is clearly well informed and articulate - a great advocate for our sport!
Francis! Just wanted to complement you on reintroducing yourself and your team for all your new subscribers. I definitely feel the new engagement and it is so refreshing! Cheers!
This is awesome. I used to live in London in 2012-2014 and enjoyed the thrill of cycling to work, but my wife was afraid of even trying it. Now I live in Amsterdam, where even small kids cycle to school by themselves. Not being forced to use public transport should be a right for everyone.
As someone who cycles from just inside the M25 (High Barnet/ Colindale) into central London (Aldgate/ White Chapel/ Mile End) I would say that cycling inside the inner circular is great and very enjoyable. Cycling between the inner circular and north circular is good for the most part (i.e. you feel safe). However, cycling in the region of north London outside the north circular is comparatively awful -and frequently I do not feel safe. I find that I have to be careful not to cycle too quickly in this outer region of London so as to get into more central areas of London - where I feel considerably safer - because the added speed and rushing mentality increase the danger I pose to others as well as myself. The worst place I have ever cycled is Watford, closely followed by Colindale. It is the peripheral boroughs that need to make the biggest changes (new infrastructure) - I think we are a long, long way from any of the necessary construction actually happening.
Great video. My parents place in the country has turned into a rat run after the introduction of a roundabout to a main road near by (even had their front lawn ripped up by the increased traffic and narrowish road), people now afraid to walk along it and cycle - they’re in a battle with the authorities who refuse to help until someone gets hit (their words more or less), those traffic calming measures have given me some food for thought to help them in that battle. Personally I live in London, but being from the country Londons got a long way to go for me to feel safe cycling in large parts of it, but it is going in the right direction, and physical barriers rather than painted lines is just a massive step forward.
Nice! Love seeing this other side of cycling on your channel. Callum’s a great ambassador, he was a lot kinder about drivers than I am 😂 And to the helmet cops - hahaha cycling cap go brrrrrr
I hope this begins to spread throughout the country. I’m in the Cotswolds and desire cycling being so popular here, so many see us as a target. People forget when they are getting arsey with a cyclist that they are a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, etc. Don’t put people at risk because you have to drive a little slower for a few seconds
B-roll looked great and what a legend Calum is. I've lived in London since 2012 and to be honest it's only been this year that I've began to feel remotely safe.
Cycle frieght is the future for the first and last miles of frieght transport, by building hubs on the outskirts of Towns and Cities. Driving lorries and vans into the centre of cities, is massively the most dispproriately highest cost of vehicle transportation. The Cycle frieght would be able to transport goods of up to 200kg from the hubs close to the major road network to the heart of the city. There can be electric motor assisted and would benefit from a really good protected cycle path network.
Great video on the major impacts even small measures can make to the safety and health of everyone. Here in Vancouver there have been big improvements to the cycle network in the central city but not so much in the 'burbs. Despite our progressive reputation there are still so many people who are anti-bike lanes and pro car. We all have to keep pushing our leaders, and our friends and families, to see the light.
Well done 👏 you for showcasing the spectacular work of LCC ... and more to the point, flippin' well done 🥳🥳 LCC for effecting such positive change in such a complex geography 🙌🙌
Great video Francis just goes to show that with a bit of thought & the right consultation a safe cycling environment can be achieved I just hope that us up north get the same! Love your videos please keep em coming 👍
Great to hear about that hopefully people will keep cycling after the pandemic cycling is good for everyone of all ages one more time great Video Mate and thanks.😎🚴🚴
I live in whitechapel and commute through most of the places you rode through in this video. Ive seen a lot of changes and Im really proud and happy with what london has done so far. I have asked myself that same question, will this be permanent?! This is a turning point and an opportunity for London, on the back of this global pandemic, to really come on top and pave (no pun intended) the way for a greener, healthier and brighter future to make this city truly exceptional. This is the break cycling has needed and I truly hope Mayor Sadiq Khan and Prime minister Boris Johnson can work together to make a true difference and invest in the infrastructure needed. I would hope that similar changes are being seen in other large cities nation wide.
It’s across the board, Sheffield has areas closed to motor traffic, lanes on roads coned off as well. Instead of riding like Lucas Brunelle we can ride without fear of being squeezed out.
Amazing work by Calum and the LCC team. This needs to happen in more Large UK cities. The positives certianly out weigh the negatives. Obvioulsy it can't be done over night but I think the current situation and the proposed "new normal" will take a lot of people out of cars and onto bikes.
Great to see all of the work that is going on now. Still a long way to go I feel as London is such a sprawling city and even being a cyclist with nearly 40 years experience, I don't feel that safe on occasions . Nevertheless it's progress anyway and that's what we need so good luck to the LCC
Thanks for bringing this exciting and progressive work to the forefront. This is one of the reasons that I love London...and I live 4,000 miles away. The importance of cycling is definitely growing in the UK and the government support is making it even better. Good stuff Francis!
So nice u do these kind of videos with more discussion in them. Cycling is the solutions to the modern cities problems: noise, traffic stocks, pollution and areas used well. Can everyone rly bike? No, but most can. Just watch how many middle aged men sitting alone in their cars every day stuck in traffic, it should almost be impossible to use car in big cities, the pollution damages the kids/preggos lungs ffs.
Great vid, thanks. Did you go past Liv St Station and see the new tarmac that seems to be a pavement extension into the road? Much more permanent looking than the barriers and cones you experienced. Any comment on them?
It looks like a ghost town! I’m a bus builder and my company has taken a massive hit! All the red buses you see we build. Oh and all the buses we build are becoming electric 🤟🏽
Buses can also be key to keeping cars out of cities and work in conjunction with cycling. Not all areas of the country are as flat London and the elders/disabled still need buses to get around so its up to the local governments to utilise both modes of transport and keep cars out unless they live within the cities.
Wish this had been in happening when I used to commute 15 miles in London... but that was 14 years ago so there were less people on bikes out there then now. Always great content Francis 👍🏻
it crushes me that my local authority responsible for the roads in my area have been really positive and for putting in place exactly the same stuff that Calum has shown here, low traffic neighbourhoods, segregation with wands, and it has been as positive for people, its not just a this is only for cyclists stuff, it benefits people, and yet now slowly the other competing local government bodies in the area are all doing their best to undo all this good work by over ruling it and saying we need to compromise with the competing voices, return the cars to streets allow the rat runs and the cut thrus, get the pesky cyclists out the way again :(
Its nice to see all the changes in London and other city's around the country . I live in Suffolk / Norfolk Coast and it's extremely dangerous for cyclists with no proposals for change ? Some vehicle drivers are extremely dangerous constantly breaking speed limits thinking nothing of doing 60mph in 30mph limits no police every tobe seen . Its seems free for all .
Wish we would see things like this in the US, my downtown rides consist of dodging idiots and silent prayers, occasionally punctuated with a Cafe stop.
I wish so much that I could ride my bike into town. But it’s just simply too dangerous. I did however buy my house a 1/2 mile away from a trail head of gravel and hard pack dirt so that I could ride safely more often.
The biggest change that needs to made is drivers and their situational awareness and respect for other road users. I have not been hit yet but near enough daily on my commute I have close calls for simple things ranging from people not indicating before turning in/changing lane, cars trying to get around somebody else turning off the main road into a side road by swerving into a cycle lane without looking in mirrors or again signaling, people parking temporarily in cycle lanes forcing cyclists into traffic and said traffic not giving way, people taking up as much of the road as possible, people not giving way at roundabouts or just pulling out because they think everyone on a bike is going 5mph and don't realise some of us are rapid so mid judge when they can sneak out etc. Etc. Hope you recover and get some wheels soon! Uber drivers, Black Cab, Buses and the dreaded middle aged city dwelling 4x4 seem to be the worst offenders... BMWs and Vans coming in close tho 😂.
@@jasethemuss86 It's taken 3 years of close calls for my first accident to take place. The driver had clearly lost patience whilst waiting in a long queue of cars and decided to turn and accelerate hard without indicating leaving me nowhere to go. You're right when drivers have no clue when it comes to closing speeds of faster, experienced riders compare to your average commuter taking their time. Thankfully it wasn't one of those dreaded 4x4 city tractors otherwise I might not be replying to this haha!
@@GodfathersBrother117 a lot of my close calls are exsactly this! Even a couple of seconds of indicating would be enough of a warning but they just don't indicate or look it's crazy how often it happens.
Depends on the city, but agreed. Seoul has an excellent arterial network, extending into the national 4 Major Rivers network, but terrible connectors and neighborhood level infrastructure.
Francis, you should ride down to Balham and look at the changes made by the council to close a street and put all the dining in the road on Bedford Hill. It's still open for cyclists and it;s wonderful.
Excellent insight Captain Cade 🏴🏴 now Callum is Scottish lives in London & went to school in London cannot believe he still has a Scottish accent 😂😂👏🏻👏🏻🏴🏴🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🏴🏴
Thanks for alerting me to LCC - I've signed up. I would love to see London become more like Amsterdam and Copenhagen - a place that's friendlier for casual cyclists.
Copenhagen isnt aa good as you think... EVERYWHERE dangerous interchanges EVERYWHERE puddles EVERYWHERE non protected bicycle lanes EVERYWHERE too narrow cycle lanes.. Yeah Amsterdam is much better than Copenhagen but other cities and villages have much better bike infa.
I live in China, and I know it’s not everyone’s favorite country at the moment, but it’s absolutely brilliant for cycling because...you’re allowed to cycle almost anywhere EXCEPT the roads! So I can get from one end of the city to the other without ever having to go on the roads. It makes the side walks a bit hairy for pedestrians; however we nearly always slow down or stop for pedestrians who are in our way (well, I do anyway!). It’s incredibly relaxed, safe, respectful, enjoyable cycling. So, once this goddamn virus BS is over, please book a flight over here, enjoy the very low cost of living, indulge in delicious food and amazing restaurants, hire a mountain bike (not road bike!), zoom across some world class infrastructure that they’re constantly building, and explore this extraordinary country by bike 🚴
As s highly skilled road user I often forget how import some infastructure is for less / no experienced people who might want to use a bike to get around. The experience of cycling in London is completely different at above / below 18mph (much worse under) before you even consider other factors
When motor vehicles become speed governed, so some knob can only deactivate the speed limiter on the race track, then we will be much safer. The next step after the vehicles become speed limited is lane guidance safety to stop other knobs from rear ending us.
What are the solutions for urban sprawl? Currently in Kansas City it takes an hour to drive from one side of the city to the other without traffic on highways. Can’t spend three hours on a bike each way to work. I suppose a decent mass transit system to supplement would be the fix, huh?
40 to go. You must be planning a massive feature for the 1000. Cmon! One with a bit of everybody that made special appearances in your videos. That would be something.
One of the biggest problems when cycling in London is the attitude of car/bus/van/lorry drivers. They are always stuck in lots of traffic which usually makes them stressed and angry. They then seem to take it out on cyclists a lot of the time as they are an easy target. It's great that bikes are now being given specific lanes which are actually off the main driving roads. The surbiton to kingston cycle path is a great example. The further away we can get from cars as cyclists, the better!
Meanwhile here in Melbourne, Australia you cannot travel more than 5kms from your home, can only exercise for a maximum of one hour once per day and there is a stay at home curfew from 8pm to 5am.
I'm staying in the country right now when I'm from a city, It feels so sketchy to bike around here, rollings hills and 55 mph limits that are always broken. If someone hits me in the city, someone will see it and may get help, if I get hit out here, I'll be dead in a ditch for hours before I'm found.
Don't normally comment on videos, but really interesting and informative vlog. The chap very articulate, knowledgeable and a great ally for all cyclists in the battle for safer roads. I'm lucky to live in a rural area (has it's own risks), but it does seem at times the hostility for cyclists, by non, is universal!
Your mate Calum really impressed me. He is articulate, well informed and has huge passion to drive change. LCC is lucky to have him.
Some great changes being made across the country for cycling.
Changes in attitude of some drivers is the biggest challenge all of this will face.
I hope this whole investment in infrastructure is not in vain, and they persevere with it.
The reign of the motor vehicle is over. Everyone needs to think differently for the sake of others and the planet.
Your right papers like the daily mail and the constant hate needs to be sorted out as well.
I definitely don't think the reign of the the motor vehicle is over, especially here in the US. It's just the beginning of it evolving into something different. Electric, autonomous, and other forms of transportation are going to continue to grow until we stop traveling as a species. In the UK its thr drivers attitude to cyclists is the hardest thing to change.
better infra = more cyclists = more drivers who are cyclists = more reason to make better infra = ...
I doubt their attitudes are worse than the attitudes of the rural American south
Drivers have a negative attitude towards cyclists due to the minority of cyclists who act terribly. It's a stereotype thing!
Junior Brito Not only. Plenty of UK drivers have an irrational, visceral hatred of cyclists.
I cycle off road, I wouldn't want to share the road with cars etc. - our roads weren't designed for that. The newer roads have to be built to consider cyclist and have lanes etc. Do the 'prima donna' road cyclists use them? Man, this is so awesome. Im quite jealous that you live in a city thats taking cycling so seriously. Where I live cyclists are treated like targets.
Good stuff, I hope we can educate drivers and cyclists to be more mindful of bike/ped safety.
RS - dig your playing bro!
It is getting better for cyclists, even in the US. I've been cycling since the 70's, even being female, drivers would purposefully try to run me off the road, and throw stuff.

Bravo to the LCC, it looks really promising and I hope that the Home Counties take note and try this as well.
Cycling leaves you with more money to spend..?? Clearly not a cyclist.
😂
Buying components 😁😂
What exactly costs a lot to keep a bike running? OIl/Wax, Brake pads/cables..for most that's well under £100 per year.

US city councils should watch this video. I'd love it if Boston made some more changes like this. Well done Calum and thanks for putting this video out, Francis.
Boston actually has made some changes, but the United States often has a different starting place from London specifically.
It would be worth looking at Chris Opie's channel with regards to using the 360 camera
no it won't because he over uses it.

Callum is very impressive and the work he'd doing for LLC is fantastic. Very jealous that Manchester doesn't have an advocate like Callum and the LLC
Cycled in Manchester recently....hideous.
I wish the LCC was a national cycling organisation.
They appear to be more pro active for everyday people on bicycles than other groups. 🤔
There is British Cycling and Cyclinguk www.cyclinguk.org/ as well as Sustrans.
All work at National level
Local campaigns do plenty of campaigning too. Cambridge Cycle Campaign is particularly keen, but Edinburgh and Bristol have excellent campaigns too.
What a superb organisation, and they seem really well represented by Callum. He is clearly well informed and articulate - a great advocate for our sport!

Hoping they keep the roads shut to through traffic in Richmond Park, like cycling so much more now through it
Nice to know these organisations exist!
Roads were open again in Richmond park today 😩
George Barnard it’s definitely a step forward, but they should have made Kingston to Richmond no through traffic on weekdays..
Think that's quite extreme. Richmond Park can be a great shortcut, to make it bicycles only does seem a bit unfair.

Retrorocket RV 😂 say no more
Buses can also be key to keeping cars out of cities and work in conjunction with cycling. Not all areas of the country are as flat London and the elders/disabled still need buses to get around so its up to the local governments to utilise both modes of transport and keep cars out unless they live within the cities.
Retrorocket muppet
Wish this had been in happening when I used to commute 15 miles in London... but that was 14 years ago so there were less people on bikes out there then now. Always great content Francis 👍🏻
Bicycling is trending here in the U.S., I hope it sticks, better yet gains more traction.
Thank you so much for this Vid.. most informative. 🤞..hope it continues to be a success 👍
it crushes me that my local authority responsible for the roads in my area have been really positive and for putting in place exactly the same stuff that Calum has shown here, low traffic neighbourhoods, segregation with wands, and it has been as positive for people, its not just a this is only for cyclists stuff, it benefits people, and yet now slowly the other competing local government bodies in the area are all doing their best to undo all this good work by over ruling it and saying we need to compromise with the competing voices, return the cars to streets allow the rat runs and the cut thrus, get the pesky cyclists out the way again :(
Its nice to see all the changes in London and other city's around the country .
@@patrickmurray8886 Cyclists ride in NYC every day, get out on the road just be smart.
Crich775 I’m not worried about me. I’m worried about the teenager on his/her phone coming around a corner that has no shoulder and destroying me.
@@patrickmurray8886 sure bud.
Crich775 haha douche bag.
It's a shame it's not changing quick enough, I was hit by and uber driver almost two weeks ago and now I'm without a bike and very frustrated by that.
That city is so much fun to ride in
Good for Londom man:
LCC cap pls ✌🏼 loving what's happening here.
Yes LCC! Callum doing a great job of flying the flag. Here's to more cycling and walking, less cars, and a healthier city for everyone!
As s highly skilled road user I often forget how import some infastructure is for less / no experienced people who might want to use a bike to get around. The experience of cycling in London is completely different at above / below 18mph (much worse under) before you even consider other factors
As a 'skilled road user' I am inconvenienced and highly irritated by being penned in and segregated for the sake of some wimps.
When motor vehicles become speed governed, so some knob can only deactivate the speed limiter on the race track, then we will be much safer. The next step after the vehicles become speed limited is lane guidance safety to stop other knobs from rear ending us.
to be fair, full driverless hovercars would be great - fifth element style

Fantastic news. Our bodies are made to move afterall
What are the solutions for urban sprawl? Currently in Kansas City it takes an hour to drive from one side of the city to the other without traffic on highways. Can’t spend three hours on a bike each way to work. I suppose a decent mass transit system to supplement would be the fix, huh?
My mind was blown at the size of the cities in the USA. Not sure what the solution is there...
There is hope.
The further away we can get from cars as cyclists, the better!
that lane is great when people aren't walking in it ;)
@@Cade_Media haha I didn't want to mention that!
You omitted black taxis...
Meanwhile here in Melbourne, Australia you cannot travel more than 5kms from your home, can only exercise for a maximum of one hour once per day and there is a stay at home curfew from 8pm to 5am.
:(
I'm staying in the country right now when I'm from a city, It feels so sketchy to bike around here, rollings hills and 55 mph limits that are always broken. If someone hits me in the city, someone will see it and may get help, if I get hit out here, I'll be dead in a ditch for hours before I'm found.
Best to join a group or get a mate along in remote areas with traffic.
Don't normally comment on videos, but really interesting and informative vlog. The chap very articulate, knowledgeable and a great ally for all cyclists in the battle for safer roads. I'm lucky to live in a rural area (has it's own risks), but it does seem at times the hostility for cyclists, by non, is universal!
thanks Matt!
If someone went to your bedroom and looked at the suitcase on the left would they find your favorite axe? Also what DAW do you use?
