I think this was the version played during the 1938 Manuel Azaña's (the president of the Republic) speech in Barcelona, which was then the capital of Spain because Madrid was considered too dangerous at the moment. The speech was named as "Paz, piedad, y perdón" (Peace, piety, and forgiveness) and it went about the history of the Republic, why we were waging war, and called for an international mediation to solve the conflict, the whole Spanish republican government and the catalan government, as well as its president Lluis Companys, were present.
Wiki... Mariano Cabrerizo... Patriotic songs have the double advantage of serving at the same time as an effective incentive and a pleasant outlet for good patriots. At his impulse they boldly prepare for combat; the fire of civility electrifies their hearts, they forget the most expensive interests, and only see, hear and yearn for the health of the Homeland, and the extermination of the enemies of freedom.
Ironically, this anthem was only the official national anthem during the liberal monarchist period of 1820 to 1823. During the second republic, Spain did NOT have an official anthem, however, this one was used as de-facto official one, and it was played at official events such as the 1937 speech of Lluis Companys (president of the Catalan government) together with the Catalan national anthem (Els Segadors) to celebrate the taking of Belchite or the epic speech of the president of the Republic, Don Manuel Azaña Diaz in 1938 "Peace, piety, and forgiveness" in Barcelona.
En 1938 España aún tenía el protectorado de Marruecos, el Sáhara y Guinea. Buen video!
