Bach - Prelude and fugue in C minor BWV 546 - Koopman | Netherlands Bach Society

- The most important manuscript of this Prelude and fugue in C minor, performed by Ton Koopman for All of Bach, was written by Johan Peter Kellner (1705-1754). He grew up and worked his whole life in central Germany, where he got to know Bach, whom he greatly admired. It is thanks to pupils and admirers like Kellner that much of Bach’s music has survived at all. The most important manuscript of this Prelude and fugue in C minor was written by Kellner.
However, this also leads to questions, as is often the case with music we do not have in Bach’s own hand. Everyone agrees that the monumental prelude is 100% Bach. It forms a stylistic and thematic entity. But opinions are somewhat divided about the fugue. That central section where the theme disappears (and where all the counterpoint even evaporates briefly) - is it really by Bach? Could Kellner have tinkered with the fugue? Or could the fugue be his composition entirely? In any case, we know he did have Bachian improvisation skills. Once, Kellner was sitting at the organ when Bach happened to enter the church and he improvised a fugue on the spot, on the German note names B A C H (B-flat, A, C, B).

Portugal is waiting. Love you guys
It's a dream come true, to see Mr. Koopman on NBS.
And in Naumburg, a very beautiful small town in the middle of nowhere.
😂😂
OMG Koopman in All of Bach! Awesome!!!
A dream becoming true...
Good to see Ton Koopman on his old form, behind the organ!
Oh, my favorite performer! His passionate performance always touches me.
I've always thought that NBS always seems to find some of the best Bach performers, and having Koopman here certainly reaffirms that.
Here here! That’s why they exist. They want us to hear Bach’s music like he would have heard it.
Beautiful. Played as the Recessional at the Funeral (Committal Service) of Queen Elizabeth II 19th September 2022
Giant yet a humble Man, a Master performer in his amazing distinctive manner plays the giant composer.
Himmlisch!! Ein Traum auf Erden!! Könnte Ton Koopman stundenlang zuhören. Absolut grandios!
In the late 80s as a teenager who only listened to rock music,I was a member of one of those music cd clubs. While looking through the catalog one day,I saw a picture of Ton Koopman plays Bach Vol 2 with that amazing 1750 Gabler organ on the CD cover. I thought it looked cool and ordered it. From the first notes of the first work I was an instant fan of Bach,Koopman, and Baroque music. Thanks to this man for changing everything I love about music. All these years later I still try and find any recordings of Baroque organ works, and love hearing how the same organ can sound so different from one organist to another.
Amazing artist, and I'm so glad to see him perform here.
Imagine to have such a mind of Bach or Beethoven and being surrounded by countless melodies. One more beautiful than the other and you only have a pen and paper to write it down. Some go mad on this. So Bachs great achievement was to stay sane with his immense genius and providing us these melodies through the endless amount of effort to organize the fragments bringing them together and writing it down as complete work.
No one knows how Bach comes up with these melodies and structures that sound like they're out of this universe , he's simply the greatest to ever exist .
All of Bach/NBS + Ton Koopman = WOW!!!
Never thought we'd see Ton Koopman join the project. What a pleasant surprise and what a great rendition and performance. Ton Koopman is one of my favourite performers on the organ.
From now- THIS is my favourite version of this piece 👌
Wow, this is spot on! Mr. Ton Koopman on NBS playing the 546. Heavy, wonderful, with a substantial gravität. Thank you.
Loving to see Ton Koopman featured here in these Netherlands Bach Society videos! Things have come full circle for Bach youtube enjoyers over the years.
Oh, wow! I'm in for a treat. A hearty thank you, NBS, and Ton Koopman! Everything you do is appreciated very much.
Grande!!! God Bless You!!!
Edgar v. Hinüber, St. Ingbert / DE
Dankeschön
Moin !
I'd bet Bach would approve of the magnificent and sublime Ton Koopman!
Today's cameras really are wonderful!
BRAVO ⚘🌹⚘🌹⚘🌹⚘🌹⚘
🎵 when Pierre Hantai was here we knew this day would come... 😉 epic prelude!! ...even though there's mystery surrounding the fugue...... thank you Ton Koopman & NBS 👊 🎵 🙂
The man. The myth. The legend. Ton Koopman! 🤩🥰🎉
No one less than Ton Koopman brought Bach into my life. His recordings of Bach's organ and vocal works were true revelations and as refreshing as spring. Now that I hear him play this magnificent Prelude and Fugue so clear and radiant is like opening the curtains in the morning and all the light of the sun falls into my troubled soul. Thank you, NBS, for this tribute to a true and unforgettable Bach interpreter!
This hildebrandt organ sounds so beautiful... I had a organ on my wedding in Maastricht playing Bach, it made it so beautiful...
Ton Koopman in AllofBach, geweldig!
Dankjewel!
What a nice surprise to see Mr. Koopman in NBS. And surprisingly i was searching this music on youtube then i discovered this recording was delivered a few hours ago. Great!!!!
I never heard this P&F so clearly !!!
It really sounds like a string ensemble, such phrasing and articulations.
Did you just make up this acronym? Exactly what the world was waiting for.

Grande ammirazione e stima
I literally cannot wait to comment so I had to stop the video! (I know its a shame..) I’m so glad to see Mr. Koopman again!! And what a brilliant, what a magnificent performance as always.. And all those different camera angles are so good! Oh what a way to start a day.. its gonna be a glorious day.. Thanks a lot!
Thank you to Ton Koopman for this performance, to dr. Edgar von Hinüber, St. Ingbert, Germany for his support, and to NBS for making such recordings.
JUSTEMENT EXACTEMENT OPINION BAISSER
Couple of the century: Koopman , NBS. Amazing!!! Excellent performance mr. Koopman!
By far one of the best recordings of this work that I have ever heard.
His first recording of this same work at the Gabler organ of Weingarten also holds up admirably in comparison to this performance incorporating many years of illustrious career since.
@@ssbphotography I love his gabler recording! Very effervescent!
DESDE 2005 EU AMO ESSA MÚSICA. Lembranças e abraços do Brasil 💚💛💙 I'm your Brazilian fan since 2007, thank you very much for your hands and thoughts, thank you!!!!
Parabéns pelo bom gosto! Saudade de São Paulo! Abs. USA-FL.
What a delight and a privilege to hear professor Ton again, after years of collecting his CDs. I can remember the excitement generated from his early CDs in the early 80s - both cembalo (with other instruments) and orgel. Let’s hope he continues recording for this edition; 548? Someone whom I’d love to meet in this world, but probably won’t be able.
Loved the keyboard and score angle, thanks for the upload !
Oh my God . . .
Let me be one with this . . .
I worked as an organist and no other composer ever came close to take over my soul and heart like Bach, take over my whole being and while I'm crying think, no beg, pray, "Please take me with you! Take me away from this ugly and greedy and cruel world and let me for ever be a part if this . . .'
The Mighty Koopman , the best organist in the modern era.
Maestro Koopman appears at last.
Wow, I learned something! I didn’t know the fugue’s authorship was uncertain. I’ll have to listen very carefully now 😉
This is the greatest video on youtube. The greatest Organist with the greatest society for music.
Agree - mostly! Of course, Van Doeselaar is no slouch. His recordings of 538 and 542 are top of mind for me. ruclips.net/video/gQMUTuNfBww/видео.html , ruclips.net/video/tgDE3klkmtQ/видео.html
@@BurkPrael Of course, they are equally genius interpretors but having someone who has done some of the only organ recordings that I like outside of NBS, be in NBS is definitely something to get excited about!
His specutacular performance that invigorates my tired mind is beyond description and incomparable
My favorite organist!!
Koopman/Bach!!!!👏👏👏👏🇧🇷
I love Ton!!! Epic prelude and fugue!!!
Grazie Maestro Koopman !
There's another video of Koopman talking about the organ that he's playing on. Bach played a part in the building of the organ. This is such great content!
Yes, thanks for mentioning it. This is the video: ruclips.net/video/0ABXN0zwb9U/видео.html
Glimpses from the other world. Only Bach has seen....
WONDERFUL!
Not particularly a fan of Koopman, anyway he plays this piece powerfully and masterfully.
Exactly, I'm also not a big fan but he plays this surprisingly well.
Wunderbar
Sempre emozionante
C'EST , MERVEILLEUSEMENT, PRODIGUX MERCI !
Sounds so sublime.
Fantastic!
SO good ! 👏👏
Such perfect interpretation!!! Quite surprised to see Maestro Koopman using the Novello edition. These days people seem to hate the Novello scores but, apart from the insane registration suggestions (e.g. full Swell, box closed..for Bach?!!!) , I think they've a great layout.
Gravitätischer Klang und akkurate Stilistik!
Fascinante!!
Legal, Patricia! USA/FL.
Koopman! Let's go!
Outstanding organ! Zacharias Hildebrandt was a genius. I can't choose between this organ and the Groningen Martinikerk organ by Arp Schnigter.
¡¡¡Ha llegado el MAESTRO !!!
As Cioran once wrote "If there is anyone who owes everything to Bach, it is certainly God."
ah the Bach cultists are at it again.
Bach is not a god. in his time he was just a mediocre composer.
There are plenty of composers who are equally as good and genius.
Koopman e Bach são inseparáveis!
guardado en favoritos!
BRAVO !
Great Mr. Koopman !!!
Superlative Ton "Tonvs Phantasticvs" Koopman, pure apotheosis.
ENGLISH Beautiful playing by Ton Koopman and here the tempo could be even faster in my opinion, both in the prelude and the fugue, however... this is of course a strictly personal opinion.
The rhetorical power of this composition would, in my opinion, have been more powerful if the tempo had been taken slower. Even considering the acoustic conditions.
maravillosoooooo
Excellent and to see you here is awesome keep it up Koopman.
Absolutely fantastic!
Bach, Hildebrandt and Koopman; what a trio!
Wonderful and full of energy. But unfortunate thathe pedal notes are not connected.
It's fascinating, how these old hands can play virtously and fntastic.
Koopman is a boss.
Magnifique, merci
It's interesting, the concert pitch is actually in C#. I would expect the old organs to if anything be down a half step, as per baroque tuning.
Welcome back maestro!
Wow. Ton Koopman.
Mike Ehrmantrout plays organ?! lol. this is one of my favorite organ pieces ever.
Great Ton
grand
Wonderful organ, fine performance, but, why oh why is Koopman always so heavy with his registration? I've noticed this before on his recordings -- "Everything AND the kitchen sink!" I'm sure that he doesn't need the 32' pedal stop all of the time either! Fabulous prelude & Fugue - despite the reservations above.
That's why I bought the Koopman registration already years ago. It's perfect!
I understand your point and respect it 🌸🌸🌸
Most of the time :
Bach music when mixed with power , heaviness and speed it become a perfect recipe 💙👍🏼
The preludium can have it I believe, the fuge becomes a bit massive in my view. By the way I am very happy mr. Smits recorded the passacaglia with a very subtle registration. I once heard Koopman playing the same piece with full organ non stop, which is too massive for my taste. Great to see Mr, Koopman in action though. I will always be greatful for the fantastic recordings and concerts that he and the orchestra performed.
This is the biggest of the 'big' P&Fs, and I reckon it can take it - Koopman plays it at a decent speed so it doesn't get bogged down. I love this!
Magnífico
"Ας νεκταρίσουμε για να μη τα νεταρίσουμε"...
It's interesting that he doesn't seem to use his heels on the pedals, only his toes.
Great! 👏👏👏👏
