      I'm not sure what you mean by "native language."
      Memory techniques are not concerned by what language you are using, nor is the brain. The more languages you know, the better. This is because the techniques are surface and deep structural at the same time.

    I have memorized several entire books (well, they're novellas, but it's still a lot of words). After a lifetime of doing this, I've found that spaced repetition is the MOST important aspect of memorization. You have to give your subconcious mind sufficient time to impress the information permanently in your mind.
    I always give myself at least 24 hours before reveiwing the same information.

    Going to try applying this to some common teaching stories I tell. (The pillar method seems a bit intimidating!)
    All of my other memorizing is word by word.

    It might be helpful when you have a little amount of information. But wht about when you have to memorize a huge amount of information like memorizing laws for an exam? In Brazil, in order to become a public servant you have to take an exam. And it is more than 500 pages just about laws with all details. I mean... one single word changes everything. For example... bidding here can be "needless", "dispensable", and "exempt", which migh looks that same idea, but it means 3 different things (by the law). How to memorize that? Thank you.

    Thanks Anthony! I have a question about fast recall.
    I am reading the victorious mind and just started filling in a memory palace with definitions that are relevant for my craft (things I keep having to look up on google). I can recall everything, but it takes me a while to decode, If I had to cite all the definitions to someone I would sound like a robot and taking my sweet time.
    Let's say I've managed to encode my information correctly, how could I possibly decode it at the speed at which you'd normally speak?
    You say in the video (at 8:04) that with training the sentence will usually come back to you faster than the memory palace. I can understand that if information is still in the short term memory, but what about when you recall something from long ago?

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  3 года назад +7

      Thanks for reading TVM!
      The point of decoding is to get it into long term memory so that you can just access the information.
      To improve speed of decoding, the Magnetic Modes are key. There are many practice drills one can cook up for that, including memorizing playing cards.
      Or you can just double down on practicing what you want to remember better, or have completely memorized.
      Keep in mind too that no one wants to listen to lists of information recited. Why would you ever have to recite a list of definitions?

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  4 месяца назад

      Thanks for your post.
      If I were you, I would complete a full course in memory training as soon as possible, or at least follow all of the steps covered in a book by a memory expert you know, like and trust to have accomplished similar goals.
      If you are "picturing" things and think that memory techniques have to do with being creative, rest assured, it does not. The whole point is to develop the five main mnemonic systems I teach so that you don't have to picture things and do not have to be creative.
      To answer your other question, no I would not read any single paragraph twenty times. Rote learning might have some kind of effect, but this kind of approach is unlikely to be practical, especially with only five days of prep time.
      Frankly, the real answer here is to never be in a situation again where you have only five days to prepare. It's not worth the stress and anxiety. The sooner you start on the path to true, proper and lasting memory mastery, the sooner you'll ensure that you're never forced to suffer through a position like this again.

      Gonna watch more, i feel like it will make me better at English and memorizing.. on another hand, im getting a feeling that the issue in my case is about the difficulties of understanding the origin of words, from a native speaker point of view, since I'm still not fluent in English.. i may need to acquire language like children being their mother tongue.. cause i guess when i understand that, i can do the techniques in a more useful way and be able to play with words to connect them with other stuff, so it be just a reminder.. so guessing what I'm lacking of is either vocabularies to be known as semantical and grammatical way adj,N,V.etc. Which will take a lot of time organizing and memorizing. Or using English as a day language like acquiring it to get to know the words and its shapes and uses naturally with out diving in semantics... after that i can be able to do the techniques in a more effective way i guess, I'm not sure about my self in all that, cause it's like unconscious thing to know, can't find the key.. you encouraged me to try and it's definitely useful.

I make sure that each poet performs his or her own action (as in the case of bilingual parents, one parent only speaks his or her language), but can relate to the things of another, in the sense of a neural network. How does rote learning reduces critical thinking you said in one of your interview. Rote learning is a fancy word for revising your concepts. Revising something you have understood again and again, how does it affect your critical thinking.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  10 месяцев назад +1

      Rote learning is not the same as revision. Consider reading the research cited in this video yourself for details.
      Rote is the absence of creative revision, literal repetition without what scientists call elaborative rehearsal..

    • @vikasvikramaaditya
      @vikasvikramaaditya 9 месяцев назад +1

      Sir but if you have understood a concept and revise it again and again to remember it, how does it comes under rote learning. Rote is to memorise something without understanding it. Using pnemonics and other tools do help but it doesn't mean that you would loose your critical thinking, by not using it as you said in an interview to bible memory.

    • @vikasvikramaaditya
      @vikasvikramaaditya 9 месяцев назад +1

      Okay as per google there are two types of rehearsals ie maintenance and elaborative.
      So by rote you mean maintenance ie to take a knowledge without understanding it. And second one is elaborative wherein you understand a concept and revise it.
      Plz be fully correct with your information. I have anxiety issues and these thoughts trigger anxiety and distrub my follow of studying.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  9 месяцев назад +1

      I'm not sure what understanding has to do with rote. Also, note that by definition science is never "fully correct." It's not in the nature of science to ever end its inquiry. New data is always coming in, and you will want to understand that not only generally, but as a means of quelling your anxiety.

    "I have been using a memory palace for some days. I create an image or craft a story for a word that sounds similar to the one I want to remember. For example, to remember 'Datura metal,' I envision an image in my head of my brother smiling at me, revealing his teeth made of metal (the word 'Datura' means 'teeth' in my mother language). Then, I place that image in my memory palace. However, it takes too much time for me to generate images that sound similar to the word I want to remember. I noticed that I was quicker at memorization when I didn't use any memory techniques. What can I do?"

      Thanks for replying."I appreciate your suggestion about using multiple Memory Palaces and specific images. However,my visual imagination is above average.The problem is sometimes I struggle to find words that sound similar to the ones I want to remember. • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  Год назад

      If it's true that your visual imagination is better than average, then wouldn't you be less likely to be having this problem? How did you determine this? What tests did you use? What are the comparative benchmarks against others and how were they tested?
      To your question, the answer is the same. Proper mnemonics don't have much to do with creative association, so I would suggest studying the art of memory from top to bottom. Something is not quite right when people think that mnemonics have quite the link to visuality and creativity that you're suggesting. Far from it, in fact.

    It's good for few paragraphs or 1 time event like your Tedx event but not for whole academic curricula because time limitation and large pile of accumulated memory loci makes it unviable. Again one could argue that why there's any need to memorize word by word for such a thing but question is simple is there any way to do that for whole academic session if possible.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  Год назад +1

      The problem with this criticism is that there's no such thing as a "whole academic curricula." Knowledge is always in a state of becoming and by limiting our focus in the way you're suggesting, the entire point is being missed, both of education as a lifelong project and memory's role in it. Dare to go beyond short term goals.
