Good stuff. Re not repeating. Dickey Betts plays a six minute from about the 6th minute of the famous live album version of Whipping Post. Absolutely amazing musical piece. Not so much a bunch of pasted together licks.
I never memorize guitar solos but it's a lot easier to read them and can do that when I pick it out on piano and read it off the screen. But I didn't do that on the song I'm working on now but that's only extra lead playing in the chorus - It's all chords.
Would you consider a vid about how you got to Nashville as a studio musician? Where from, started lessons?, school, school bands, how you progressed? Also if you are a mechanic, noticed the vet in your garage with the hood up? Your vids are very well done, very professional. I am a non-musician but interested in the music bus. thanks a lot.
This would be a fun one. Might have to do that once the channel grows a little more that enough people would care and me not sound egotistical doing a video all about me haha. Short version is, learned basic chords from my mom, then learned and played in bars 3-5 nights a week from 14-18 yrs old, studied at the musicians institute in LA, worked as a music director on cruise ships for four years, moved back to Missouri to spend some time with my folks for year, bought an old Camaro for my dad (he didn’t know it was for him at the time) spent a year restoring it (literally every bolt out of the car) gave it to him for Christmas before I moved to Nashville, the year in Missouri I built an online recording business working for nothing and building it up to practice the skill set before I got to town, hit Nashville and fell into the tracking thing pretty quick, did that for a few years, toured a bit, now tracking full time and off the road. Bought the Vette a few years ago and have been putting it back together.
I'd certainly line up to watch that one. Vertex effects has done interviews with studio musicians and I've gotten a lot of valuable insights and lessons out of their experiences.
I really like the tone you get from your guitar. Which pickup are you using? The neck? Is it stock, or did replace it with a third party pickup? Is your SG a Gibson, or an Epiphany?
It’s a stock neck pickup but the guitar has been heavily modified. It originally was a 2001 faded with ebony board. It’s been refinished twice, bone nut, gold hardware, pleked, different bridge.
I got a friend who always forgets licks when we jam and everytime i want to go to solo he forgets his parts on bass guitar and its really annoying and funny. 😎
It’s really nice that you have been doing this for so long that your hands just know how to fill in as long as you know the starting an ending point. However, I really don’t think that helps anyone that’s trying to figure out what you’re talking about. You give no guidance on how to actually do what you’re talking about, you seem to be just rambling. Maybe you should watch some how to videos yourself
Nick’s “Library of Licks”
I mean… this has so many potentials!!
Love your channel man. Great stuff! 👍🏼
Hahaha I need a lesson package
Thank you for the kind words
Nice work! Most succinct and thoughtful presentation of real pro-tips I’ve seen in years of guitar RUclipss. subscribed!
That makes my day man. So glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for explaining the tie between learning the lick in multiple places and where it can lead you.
Absolutely! Thanks for watching
Just came across your channel. Excellent stuff! You’re getting your own folder: Viking with Axe

I always enjoy your vids. Thanks Nicky. Greetings from sunny South Africa
Killer! So glad you enjoyed them. Thanks for watching
Wonderful 👏 👏 has to be a scary thought when live
Live I tend to fall back onto “go to” ideas then try to relax enough to play something fresh. Always an internal battle
ALWAYS Great stuff!
Appreciate you! Thanks for watching

Keep 'em coming. I like your videos. No Serial Killer.
You rock
More awesome content Nicky... (from a guy stuck in the cowboy chords 😂)
Haha thanks man, work on that CAGED system a bit…probably the next step out of the cowboy chords.
My lick book is saving tabs onto my favourites on RUclips lol
Haha right on. Thanks for watching!
I'm trying to get back into playing guitar. It's been years. I used to play all the time but I have forgotten just about everything I used to play
Glad you are getting back into it!

Sorry I know that wasn’t a short version haha
@@NickyV wow!

As soon as I start “thinking” I start stinking!😂
Haha love that
Don't think of like that but by using your photographic perception you can get through this.

So the way to remember licks... become a master at musical theory. Not sure why I have never thought about that before.
I think having a command of the intervals would be the best starting point. Don’t need to know any deep crazy theory
❤
You reckon Clapton considered intervalic harmony when he was stealing Buddy Guy licks? Did SRV analyse the scalic/chord relationships of Albert King?
No to the first, possibly a bit to the second. Probably would have remember more of them if they did.
I got a friend who always forgets licks when we jam and everytime i want to go to solo he forgets his parts on bass guitar and its really annoying and funny. 😎
Send this one to him haha
That might be my brother in your band!!!!! Lol
@@shecalledmebaby3090 hahahaha
It's not licks i forget, it is lyrics to songs.
Don’t have any experience on that topic. Maybe try the Roman Room technique
@@NickyV hmmm never heard of that one, I'll look into it.
remembering ALL that "intervallic" info, and THEN remembering the lick?......probably not gonna happen for me

I’m sorry this one didn’t hit home man.
