I speak German,French but above all the languages I adore British English in terms of accent! Also your explanation of the Gerund, and English grammar at all,is thorough and very praiseworthy !
That's right! This is an introduction. I will be doing an advanced lesson in future for verbs followed by gerund/to + infinitive with a different meaning for each one.
Many people are taught that the infinitive = to + base verb form. It might be worth making the distinction between the bare infinitive and the full infinitive, so as not to cause confusion. Start, stop, and begin can also be followed by the infinitive. Examples: I started to cry. I stopped to take a call. Let's begin to sing. I stopped to warm my hands by the fire. Of course, the meaning changes in some cases when switching verb forms. I stopped warming my hands by the fire.
The rules you must learn are whether the verb takes gerund, or to + infintive (or object + to + infinitive, or preposition + gerund). Go to the grammar section of my website, and you will find a helpful table
Try + gerund = try as an experiment (I tried adding some salt, but it still tasted awful) Try + to + infinitive = try something difficult. (I tried to get to the meeting on time, but failed)
great video..great help, thank you for posting...I am studying through my tefl grammer and this is just perfect fir brushing up on those tricky grammer bits
No, I speak Russian. Try + gerund = пробовать Try + to + infinitive = стараться / пытаться Have a look at what google says for the German translations of these words. I still like my first definition, I'm afraid. I can't see how I can improve it.
Hello, I am Amit Gupta FROM Hyderabad. there is a question to understand passive of gerund and infinitive. 1. Dear Prof, I was wandering If I might ask you a question. Topic is negative. I must say: A) I don't like swimming or I like not swimming or both with different mean. I enjoy not having or I don't enjoy having. Thank you kindly
Andrea Giraldo They have different meanings. I like not having a car = It's a pleasure for me not to have one. I don't like having a car = It's not a pleasure for me to have one.

Dear sir, I know 'recommend' is a gerund, so is it ok to say "I recommend him visiting the doctor". However I think "I recommend him to visit the doctor" is correct. If so then why? Thanks in advance.
hi, thank you a lot for the video, it's been very helpful, but I have a question, in the quiz the questions 9 and 20 use gerunds after the preposition to, it is confusing because the preposition to is using with infinitive, thank you so much.
paola sanchez TO + infinitive after 1) certain verbs 2) adjectives 3) чтобы. HOWEVER: gerunds after prepositions (including TO). It's confusing, I know. But that's the way it is!
5:16, if I get it well, "Other verbs which are gerunds that are worth remembering..." "To be worth" is one of those verbs, then? Thought that "worth" was a adjective and wanted an infinitive.
i suggest we go out to eat , :) suggest is not followed by gerund ,as u taught "suggest is followed by gerund" is it always true ???? i'm confused please eplain this ,i like the way you teach (Y)
It's not easy - Being green. The gerund for the verb 'to be' is used here as the subject of the sentence. As I said in the lesson, when the verb is subject, use gerund. It's important to speak English. Speaking English is important. It's important. Speaking English. Is this clear?
No. I tried to catch the cat is more likely. Have you ever done it as an experiment? We just try to do it, and maybe we fail, or maybe succeed, but it is usually rather difficult whatever the result. ''I tried giving the cat some water to make it feel better.'' is trying something as an experiment.
In your case, "fun" and "funny" are not describing the same meaning. "Fun" is an uncountable noun meaning ‘pleasure and enjoyment’ while "Funny" is an adjective and it means ‘amusing’ or ‘causing laughter’. So, if we say ‘cooking is fun" means the action that applies to cooking is ’enjoyable" but, by using the word to "Funny" somehow has changed the meaning to "amusing". I hope my explanation would clear out your doubt.
I'm flattered! Stay tuned because I have lots more to teach... :)

Yes!!! It is OK to use to + infinitive OR gerund with 'like, love, play' and even 'start'. You are right. But we usually use gerund

I'm confused because in your advanced video you mentioned that verbs: like, hate, love could use both the gerund and the infinitive :-?
They can use either, but we use gerund more often with these verbs. I think 'hate' is always gerund.
No infinitive, and cannot be conjugated (he will, she will...NOT he wills.) Check wikipedia, 'English modal verbs'. You will see that it is a modal.
in the video, recommend is under the gerund column. But in the quiz you gave us, question no. 2, it is He recommended to go to his favourite restaurant.why?
Thank you for your prompt reply!
What about after verbs like "do" and "did"? "Do you like swimming" or "Do you like to swim?"

Thank you so much MrSkypelessons i am from morocco can i have your Facebook Plz ?
Practise???
"Cooking is fun" , or "Cooking is funny? "
I would distinguish them in this way, "Cooking is fun" and " Cooking is a funny lesson“.
Thank You Hoho Meagain. But, I still don't undestand. Why is cooking fun? İs "fun" adverb or adjective?
In your case, "fun" and "funny" are not describing the same meaning. "Fun" is an uncountable noun meaning ‘pleasure and enjoyment’ while "Funny" is an adjective and it means ‘amusing’ or ‘causing laughter’. Oh sure. The issue is very clear now. Thank You so much for the explanation:)

Kermit the frog sings "is not easy being green". that´s a gerund after and adjective, IS HE WRONG?!!
