@Michelle Norris Well it should mean a consciousness of social injustice and inequality but in truth is used to categorise ultra left-wing proponents or should I say cult members of the identity politics movement.
But it's not the debating society, is it? If you listen to Omar, who is on the debating society, they want the debate to go ahead and it is the Student Union who have threatened that of they do they will have their funding cut as the DS is reliant on the SU for funding, rooms, insurance and everything else it needs to exist.
The Administrators just want to get their college fees paid, regardless of how this is achieved. They have no scruples whatsoever. Extreme pressure by normal people has to be placed on the University Administrators and on the Vice Chancellor: Extreme Pressure.
“Cancel Culture” is a central tenet of Woke. This is undeniable. And this is a subject close to my heart. It is because I have had a job thrust upon me. Namely, adjudicating as to who can and who cannot speak before a Society at a British Russell Group University. My remit is not to invite anybody who might “upset” or “trigger” not the majority, but any of our student body. Now, this has made me reflect on who, historically, I would have to not invite, uninvite or ban from campus. Plato and Aristotle. They would not be invited on the basis that they thought that the state should censor music. Aristotle also endorsed the institution of slavery and thought that it was “natural.” He is definitely off the list. David Hume, A man described on the University of Edinburgh’s own website, accurately, as: “The most influential thinker of the Scottish Enlightenment and one of the greatest philosophers of all time.” He has also be described as: “The most important philosopher ever to write in English.” Edinburgh have every right to be proud of their noted alumni who, far ahead of his time, opposed slavery and was the embodiment of advanced liberal thought. The Aberdeen Philosophical Society wrote in the 18th Century: “Learn, Mr Hume, to prize the blessings of Liberty and Education, for… had you been born and bred a slave, your Genius, whatever you may think of it, would never have been heard of.” However, thanks to a brief comment in a footnote, in 2020 Edinburgh University announced that its David Hume Tower is to be renamed because the philosopher’s “comments on matters of race… rightly cause distress”. Banned from campus. Name not allowed to be mentioned in classes on Philosophy. Leonardo Da Vinci: Good God no! In the official records of the time, Leonardo in his twenties is mentioned twice: once as having completed his training, and once as having been accused with other young artists of making improper advances to a male model. He was acquitted at trial, but, as we know, an accusation is all you need for the Woke culture to condemn you. Banned from campus. Mahatma Gandhi: In Manchester they are erecting a statue to the great man outside the Cathedral. However, this statute was condemned by many students at the University of Manchester on the basis that it, the statute, was ‘racist.’ ‘Racist’ because of some comments that Gandhi made about native black stretcher bearers during the Boer War. Not invited. George Orwell: He made remarks mocking vegetarians at the end of ‘Road to Wigan Pier.’ His views on freedom of speech would cause deep offence to those who believed in ‘safe spaces.’ Taken off the invitation list. Martin Luther King Jr.: During his ‘I have a Dream’ speech in August 1963 he made several references to the word “n*gr*”. Now of course, the speech itself is inherently anti-racist. Indeed it is probably one of the most anti-racist speeches in history. However, to your easily-triggered person the context is irrelevant. All that matters is use of some of the naughty ‘trigger’ words. As a consequence he would be uninvited. J John Stuart Mill: Unquestionably “Mr. Woke” of the Victorian era. A pro-feminist; anti-slavery, pro-freedom campaigner before his time. However, he would have to be un-invited. Firstly, because he favoured the death penalty and secondly because, although he was vehemently anti-racist, like Dr. King, he used certain words in his vocabulary that would make the hypersensitive and neurotic go into a feint and then, possibly, into a permanent decline. As a consequence, he would not be invited to speak. Rudyard Kipling: Students at the University of Manchester recently painted over a Kipling poem on the basis that he was “imperialist and anti-Indian.” Imperialist he may have been, but Kipling was born in India. How can he be an Indian anti-Indian? Truly an inverted form of racism if ever there was one. Banned from campus. Last, but not least, Karl Marx. Because of derogatory remarks that he made about the Slavic people he would not even make it to the invitations list. In fact, he would be banned from campus. The trouble is, all that I am left with to invite, or permit to be invited, are the anodyne and dull. Those who have nothing interesting nor new to say. In fact, those speaking pretty much match the mindset of modern students and modern faculty. It is just the bland leading the bland. So Baroness Fox is in good company.
Grow a pair and tell them to do one and get another job. If you don't walk away from it then you are part of the problem , and long term you will find yourself on the losing side
Baroness Claire Fox had been invited to speak about "the importance of discussion but the student's union raised concerns and eventually her appearance was called off" Oh, the _INANITY_ !!!! At this point, pursuing a college/university education is quite the fools errand!
Thankyou Omar fantastic. I wish that more young people were more like you, willing to listen to the other side of a discussion even if you don’t agree and even if you don’t like it. Therefore fully committed to free speech. By not allowing free speech we create an enemy and fracture society. Keep up the debate. Look forward to seeing you and hearing from you in the future.
Omar has a future ahead of him as a sensible chap. He'll also be getting a ton of flack for saying this and being on GBNews, from the very same people who complained in the first place.
Well done, Omar. Great that you spoke out. What’s the point of having a debating society if everyone agrees with you? Simply ludicrous. When these students leave uni & start work, particularly in the private sector, they’ll soon realise no one will put up with this nonsense.
It’s the same principle as having elections in totalitarian states where we all know who will win ....it’s about gaining power and keeping it at all cost.
It's time these Students Unions got cut down to size. No student HAS to be a member, it's done automatically, when they register. More students should know they can opt out of being in their SU.
Omar is a smart young man. His willingness to be open minded and listen to those he doesn’t agree with shows a level of maturity the heads of the University or the SU simply don’t have. I think he will do well in the world. As a society we are allowing those with the developmental level of a tantruming toddler to dictate the direction debate. What will the consequences be for society even just 20 years down the line.
The irony is surely lost on the Student Union. In other words they do not want debates because that means people will question the status quo. The powers to be want compliant sheep who blindly follow their dictates without question
It seems there is no longer any robust discussion within our universities, and that they are being reduced to echo chambers of one united point if view. Perhaps students are not looking to expand their knowledge, and find it less complicated to simply be indoctrinated.
That's what I like 'bout students: Just out'r school .. Read a few books ... An got the whole world figured out .. Shoot ! .. If only I was a Student. Just out'r school .. Read a few books .. An got the whole world figured out.. .... "I could be a PARROT too" ....

Employers are rejecting them. Suddenly it's discrimination but when people they don't like are rejected for their world views it's accountability and business are free to employ who they want.
University's should have a clause that even though something is organised by say the students union, if cancelling a speaker could be seen to reflect badly on the institution, then they should be allowed to either overturn the cancelling, or call off the whole event, with those doing the cancelling, personally liable for any costs incurred as a result.
anybody wishing to go to the royal Holloway ,FORGET IT , THEY ARE AS THICK AS SHIT ,i live minutes away from the students ,some times on the A30, there are no cars on the road ,i have seen them on many occasions these idiots standing by the traffic lights waiting for the little green man telling them to cross the road AND THERE IS NO TRAFFIC !! if this is the standard of the future generation ,god help society ,there's dense ,then there's the students of Holloway collage ,
Everyone needs to now ridicule, make fun of, & laugh at the administration of this university, as being way too weak-kneed to simply "say no" to handful of students who claimed they might be offended by a certain speaker. This incident needs to be given as much bad publicity as possible, in all media forums. Future university students need to boycott this university - as they will obviously learn nothing worthwhile by attending that university. But most importantly, the government should cut off funding for any university which does not allow freedom of expression & debate - no matter who that may offend. It's about time everyone recognised that just because someone expresses a different point of view, that does not constitute "hate speech".
Because our language is under assault. Teachers can't spell, the world can't define women, nobody understands apostrophes, grammar is dying, and some of us aren't too pleased about that.
Two people offended so they want to cancel Clare Fox. These students should realise they are only there because of this countries freedom of speech. Well done Omar!
If the "All Powerful" student union didn't want to hear The Baroness speak, they could have abstained from attending. Cancelling the event, screams volumes. 🤐😳🤯
We should be accusing that university of racism - for not allowing a student from one of its racial minority groups, to organise an event & invite a particular speaker of their choosing to that event. The university's excuse that some other students claimed that speaker would have been "offensive" to them - is merely being used as a cover & an excuse for racism, prejudice, & discrimination, against those ethnicities they do not particularly like. The "race card" needs to be played here against the university's "wokism". The university is simply using its wokism as an excuse for racial prejudice. Government funding of such prejudiced universities needs to stop.
This doesn't surprise me. My daughter was a student there and couldn't wait to get out. They were either underachieving, anti social or had no sense of humour.
Student union should have grown a pair and said just because you hate the speach doesn't mean it's hate Speach and is fine your offended but it didn't mean anything is cancelled. They are the trouble makers
Students Union being so scared that people may talk sense , they are so left it’s a wonder they ever get anywhere, when you cannot hear the other side of a conversation at a University there is a problem that needs to be sorted , does a University need a union and if they do should it be one that only represent’s a small minority, in this instance made more ridiculous by the fact it was over a debate surly the whole idea is to have differing opinions but it seems only allowed to differ if it suits the agenda so not open debate.
This woke university's practice of "cancel culture" has prevented a debating society from doing just that. If the university stops events from proceeding simply because a few students claim to find a speaker offensive - then it's a wonder that university allows any student events at all. I wonder what the university would do if all of the students from the debating society were to claim to "be offended" & "not included" by another speaker appearing at the university, with whose views they disagree. Would the university then cancel the appearance of that speaker? Or does it demonstrate bias by only cancelling speakers who are not seen as "woke". It seems to me as though student organisations like this university's debating society may have to find alternate venues outside of the university campus, if they wish to conduct serious debates & other such events in the future. And this is such shame - because universities were never intended to be "safe" spaces for people who are so easily offended by opposing views. Better still, any universities who do not allow such genuine freedom of expression & debate need to have government funding terminated.
When a situation is ridiculous but people are serious about it it attracts ridicule and people will make jokes about it. That's life so ha ha ha Holloway students union!😂
Tagged for the future. Imagine future employers hearing of this? Another Uni ticked off the list because who wants to have to support spineless snowflakes who can't face the simplest of challenges? Useless, but they'll be good at shelf-filling; tins don't argue back.

Jesus she exploded and nearly running after the bloke who called her that .
