Man, so happy for you! To be honest I had a pretty high opinion of Røde but seeing how that USB jack was designed, I have to say my opinion has changed slightly
Thanks! I don't think it's bad design really, there's a screw to hold the USB jack in place and I also like the modularity of it. No idea how the previous owner managed to break it actually.
@@JanBeta maybe the previous owner did a lot of traveling? i.e. packing/unpacking equipment, plugging/unplugging for gigs etc. That jack would be a stress point for a careless user... It's more of a studio mic though, so not sure if that makes much sense! :D I feel it could have been slightly better design with the jack mounted normally on a PCB, but then having an angled pin header that couples with the main board, rather than the straight pins.
Had 10 mins free to procrastinate! Essentially something like this: imgur.com/a/iYJjNxi Although rewatching your video now, the design is not THAT bad. They must have had additional challenges like the placement of the 3.5mm plug to think about as well.
I've been using Rode mics for my whole career, 35 years in audio. When I saw they had a USB condenser mic, I was interested to find out if it was up to the same standard as their stage and studio mics. My biggest concern was how the Analogue/Digital converter would sound, since they used the same capsule as the NT 1A and I know that cap works perfectly. Well long story short I brought one and I'm very impressed with it. They've particularly well suited to deeper male voices because of the better frequency capture in low and low mid ranges. To get the best out of it for voice work, sit very close to the mic and talk across it, not directly into it, to make use of the proximity effect. It will get every nuance of your frequency range for pants moistening deep boomy man voices that drives the girls crazy and make subs shake desks. Good score, and thanks for the teardown (mine has scratchy volume pot, needs a clean.)
Stress locations, it helps to put something there to strengthen it. Such as hot glue. It won't strengthen the solder connections, but it will provide the whole backend with support to the board. Resists vibration and movement. And its easy to remove. When used on wires soldered to pads or terminals, the vibrations of daily use, time, transport etc are absorbed by the glue, which has some "give" and retention; and not allow the wire itself, at the solder point, to weaken. Instead of a fixed point where all the stress terminates (where it is soldered), the stress is distributed across the entry point to the glue, and seen in parallel along the remainder of the wire to the solder. Love those easy fixes. But then I don't learn anything. And I love learning, more than I love easy fixes.
Nice pickup and repair! I guess if they had used a flexible connection of some kind between the USB port and the main PCB there it might be more hard wearing. Nice though!
Just fixed my NT-USB as well! I was able to remove the knobs simply by pulling on them hard enough, I guess I have grippy fingers. Nicely designed mic, very easy to work on.
I recently repaired the same type of connector on a Blue Snowball microphone. The white plastic middle part has a tendency to break off and get stuck inside the USB cable connector if you yank it.
I guess the acoustic side of things was done by another team. The USB jack design is fine in my opinion, no idea how the previous owner managed to break it that badly.
Items like the USB jack are bought in bulk off the shelf from the lowest bidder. There are pros and cons to using industry standard connections; obviously they can be much cheaper but that also means that you don't control the quality. Back in the days when everyone made their own proprietary connectors, this was less of an issue, but then you run into the issue of inter-compatibility and not being able to find adapters. The nice part is that even though the part was of lower quality, replacement parts are very easy to find and work with.
@@raggededge82 The socket is fine. But the mounting is wrong. The socket has two lashes for mounting that are not used. It could have been glued or clamped in position. But the full force is on the pins that are not made to maintain the forces. This is a bad design from Rode.
Thanks for this tutorial! My loyal NTUSB had a similar issue and this video and a 30 cents spare part (ordered from reichelt direclty after watching your video) REALLY saved my life!
Wow that seems like a pretty good mic, you like to repair all sorts of stuff so this isn't out of place on your channel. Keep it up! Oh, David, The 8 Bit Guy, hat gestern in seinem Video deine Spende eröffnet. Woher hast du so viele Aufkleber? Ich würde einige von denen selbst lieben. Sie haben auch Deutschland falsch geschrieben. (As always please excuse any slips or bad German)
Seems to me there is a bit of a design flaw with that. The two metal lugs on the shield should act as a strain relief for the connector, as they are not used the strain is taken by the pins that flex slightly with constant plugging in and out the cable. Hence the connector eventually broke off.
Electronics in NT-USB looks much more complex than in NT USB mini. Is this hardware capable to support new RODE Connect application? Real time noise reduction, compression etc.
hello, what kind of soldering iron are you using? i got super unlucky today and my usb connection got very loose with my own nt usb microphone but its long out of warranty. your repair seems very easy to do.
My Rode NT USB began to be detected in the Windows system as a USB PnP Sound Device. I reinstalled the USB drivers, I reinstalled Windows, I changed the cable, I connected it to another PC, but nothing helped. What could it be? The microphone works, but is recognized in the system as a USB PnP Sound Device. Although previously it was defined as Rode NT USB
Hey Jan, I followed this video in order to fix the loose USB (bad contact) from my RODE-NT Usb, but the first time I assembled it on the opposite side, so the power was not enough to even light up the blue light on the mic. So then I soldered it the right way, and the microphone gets the power correctly(and the led light lights correctly). But my issue is now that my PC does not recognise the microphone. At times, when I plug it in really snugly it works and it starts installing the drivers on my pc, but it quickly disconnects. I have asked several places in my city, but nobody seems to know the solution. I wondered if you or anyone in the comments section would know what could I try/do since I don't have a warranty to send it to official RODE, and they might charge me more money than what I paid for this.
Let me ask you a question that I hope makes sense. When I attach this microphone, the NT-USB Mini to my Macbook Pro, nothing shows me that it is actually working! I compare it to the built-in mic in my Macbook Pro and the Macbook Pro works great! I've tried both back and forth and I can't tell any difference. I can't tell if it is even working. No light. Nothing. The Macbook Pro indicates it is on but that is it.
nice fix. Jan. but the last clip from about 16:50 is the only piece of audio cumming via the Rode, and it has quite some noice and reverb from the room your sitting in. to be honest, sell it for 100/120 euro's and keep your AKG goeing, it fits your type of filming much more. that one sounds so clean and direct, dont change that!!! this is more like a podcast thing you have to put your whole darn head into this thing. ;) this Rode is always in the way on your desk, and pretty directional. hey it even sounds like it is sampling at a low sample rate in AudioMaster. Nice repair Jan thanks oh i have a suggestion for that microphone drill a hole in the small pcb and put a stiff wire through the hole and solder to the usb mount lugs in like a u shape to make the whole assembly a little stronger
I had to get a warranty replacement for my Røde NT USB microphone due to exactly the same failure. This really is a very poorly designed part of the mic - the USB connector should have been properly mounted to a PCB. I suspect this is a pretty common mode of failure for these mics. I used to remove the USB cable from the mic when not in use but now leave it in there and instead disconnect it at the computer. Hopefully, this will prolong the life of it. That said, I really didn't connect/disconnect from the mic that much so it didn't last anywhere near as long as it should have.
Nice video, like all others. Please buy plastic tools to remove knobs. You buy a set of plastic tools from car section. Those are stronger than the one sells for phone repair purposes. Best regards.
Hi first off great video👍, i have the same microphone but in my case the little black box ( 7:08 ) with the 4 pin slotes on the mainboard broke off. Do you think it can be repaired?
Yes, that is a standard 2.54mm pin header. You can buy it from a lot of electronics suppliers. You would have to measure the size (height) precisely and find a matching one. Desolder the old one, solder in a new one.
It's a USB type B, which are typically used on the "upstream" device side. The more usual rectangular USB ports you see are called "type A" ports, which are on the "downstream" host side, typically a computer.

Hey, having the exact same problem and while waiting for my usb b females to arrive i was wondering: is there a simple way to stabilize this exact point to prevent that from happening every few years? Maybe someone can share some experiences or knowledge. :-)
Use a better quality USB socket (like I have in the video), use leaded solder (which is a tiny bit more flexible and less likely to crack), put some strategic dabs of hot glue or non-conductive silicone glue around the connector. Not much else you can do, I guess. :)
It is possible of course, it's probably not going to be very sturdy though. You should be able to get a connector that fits somewhere I guess, these are super standard parts, many USB sockets with the correct orientation will fit fine. It doesn't necessarily have to be the exact one I used.
nice repair and easy-to-understand explanations... I happen to have the same mic and I was wondering if you could tell me what to fix/ replace in particular because my headphone jack doesn't work anymore... So whenever I try to monitor my still working recordings I can only do it without the mic's output AKA by using the normal speakers included in my PC... Therefore could you please explain what causes the headphone jack to stop working or make a video on it? I noticed that you were very good at explaining in this video, it would help me out a huge bunch Btw, I also noticed that you had a bit of a German accent, I'm a German myself xD
Oh, I didn't look into how the headphone amp works. Might just be a broken headphone jack, that's a common fault in most devices. I can't really make a video about that unless mine breaks I guess. ;)
Hi, how were you able to tell that this was the issue? My Rode Mic doesn't get recognized by PCs or Macs, but the light lights up when plugged. Monitoring works as well. Could it be the same thing?
Yes, could be the same issue. If the mic gets USB power, it is going to light up and the internal monitoring is going to work. You probably have one or both of the data lines on the USB broken.
I would still guess it's a cracked solder joint on the connector. Maybe it is possible to remove the glue and take a closer look/measure continuity. The rest of the circuit should be pretty reliable as far as I can see.
I bought a broken RODE NT1-A a while ago and people are absolutely able to break those constructions. The housing was ruined completely and wouldn't hold screws anymore.
I remember having to use quite a lot of force initially (I had already opened it before when I shot the video). Maybe just try brute forcing it some more? I can’t imagine that they used glue or anything on these. It’s probably just very tightly screwed on.
I have this same mic since 2015. I live in the UK. Today I wanted to use it, but no blue light on the front. Mic is detected by windows and OBS, but no sound is picked up by the mic. Any idea what would be causing this? Thanks

No, it's just a purple LED. The black light LEDs look similar but emit vastly more UV which indeed can be harmful to your eyes if you are exposed for a longer time. No worries here though.
I thought that Røde offered lifetime warranty if it's a manufacturing fault, which this seems like it is. They would have probably replaced it for the original purchaser at least.
My Rode NT USB Mini plugs in and lets me use the headphone jack but the mic doesn't work anymore so annoying. Getting xlr mic soon to fix this issue. Is there a fix for mine?
Might have to check my windows services to be sure I didnt change anything, AND NOW IT WORKS. I suppose I disabled the wrong thing hmm. Bluetooth is still broken on my Windows 10 thats for sure!
For me, Windows 10 has a tendency to break the settings for audio devices with every update, I usually have to fiddle with the settings a bit and reactivate things to get everything working. Glad you fixed the problem for now! :)
@@JanBeta It was putting my BT device to sleep before the driver could get installed. Everytime. Turned that option off and reinstalled realtek bt drivers and it works again!!!
Yes, I heard from quite a few people experiencing the exact same problem. The construction is not very sturdy with the connector soldered on in a way that it was not designed for. The solder joints and the connector get a lot of physical stress this way. Poor design choice for sure. Although the mic itself is excellent.
@@JanBeta I use the microphone for singing. I find recording vocals through U.S.B. microphones still needs some post editing on a audio editing programme. I also have an old Blue Snowball.. good but the Rode is slightly better...The Rode cost me well over 200 dollars new..I must have it over 5 years. I wouldn't have the courage to take it apart..I'd probably mess it up completely.. I've let it fall accidentally on the floor a few times...it's still working.

Mh, sounds like an intermittent connection on the data lines to me. The mic and internal headphone amp are going to work fine as long as the power gets to the mic but you won’t be able to use it via USB. Maybe try to use another USB cable and see if that fixes it. Otherwise I’d advise to look at the solder joints on the USB connector in the mic (as in this video).
@ Jan Beta . Hi, great video, I have the same microphone, my usb port actually works, but the headset port is almost dead, and I have no idea how to fix it, anyone? Thanks.
Seems really dumb to use a surface mount part for this but then again I have no idea if you can even get a more securely mounted USB-A port. At least I would want the metal shroud to act as a strain relief on the port, so that it doesn't get tugged out like this seemingly was.

And "Røde" means "(the) red", but I'm pretty sure they just went with the Ø instead of O for stylistic reasons as it is an American brand and they pronounced it "Rhode".
@@Nukle0n They're actually an Australian company. The origin of the name is that their original device was first nicknamed the 'Rodent-1', (hence this being called the "Røde NT USB"), which they decided to adopt more officially, and the "ø" was used as a nod to the company founder's Scandinavian ancestry.
This microphone for me was a disaster, bought it for 150 euros exactly in late 2022, and few months has passed only and that USB connector is broken, im talking on discord and it goes quiet, or completely disconnects...
I noticed that you were very good at explaining in this video, it would help me out a huge bunch
Btw, I also noticed that you had a bit of a German accent, I'm a German myself xD
I have the exact same problem you described, but when I open my microphone it looks ok and it is glued.
Do you have any idea what could I do?
I would still guess it's a cracked solder joint on the connector. Maybe it is possible to remove the glue and take a closer look/measure continuity. The rest of the circuit should be pretty reliable as far as I can see.
I bought a broken RODE NT1-A a while ago and people are absolutely able to break those constructions. The housing was ruined completely and wouldn't hold screws anymore.
My NT USB also died, but sadly there was an over voltage and a spark at the headphone connection. This is probably unrepairable, right?
Oh, most likely a transistor died. I wouldn't say it's unrepairable but troubleshooting might be a lot more difficult.
I know this video is kinda old, but i really can't twist of the bottom. Even used screwdrivers like you have done but it just wont' come off
I remember having to use quite a lot of force initially (I had already opened it before when I shot the video).
Thanks
Sounds like maybe it's a connector problem, too. Probably the voltage supply to the mic cuts out. Might be a broken trace somewhere, too.
@@JanBeta Surely it cannot be a connector issue as the mic is getting detected? Moving the USB cable at the connection DOESS NOT make it intermittently work. Can I send you photos of the interior if I open it up.. and would you be able to assess it from those photos? Thanks
Looks like a nice score.
Thanks a lot. Did this just now.
PS: Get yourself a nice soughtering iron + pump. Don't try to cheap out...it was a horrible experience for me...
Now I get it The Rode Mic is used alot by you tubers and it have a build in A to D conversion.
Is there a way to buy the pcb that attached to the connector?
I don't think they are sold separately unfortunately.
What a terribly weak design for such an expensive mic. I know it's designed for home users but that is just unacceptable IMHO.
Is that purple led a blacklight? (Everyone is saying black light is dangerous)
Warranties are not transferable. They probably would also want proof of purchase.
I have exactly the same problem..Must be a weak connection in all Rode U.S.B. microphones
Anyone know where to get the replacement USB Type B upright connector that is exactly the same as the one used here? I'm having difficulty finding it.
Link and part number is in the video description. :)
Winner winner, chicken dinner!
Dave Jones would also say "Jan went in like Flynn, replaced the USB port and Bob's his uncle".
Hello, my problem is that when I connect it to my MacBook it showing it in audio devices for both in and out, but in 2-10 sec it disappears. Blue lamp is on. I can hear sound of it only directly from headphone out on mike itself. Please help me to resolve this issue. Thanks.
@@JanBeta tried different cables, new connector. All the same..
I’m having issues with the headphone jack, when I connect my headset I can only hear from one side :/
@ Jan Beta . Hi, great video, I have the same microphone, my usb port actually works, but the headset port is almost dead, and I have no idea how to fix it, anyone? Thanks.
At 6:10 the tool for that is called a “destuffing tool”
Seems really dumb to use a surface mount part for this but then again I have no idea if you can even get a more securely mounted USB-A port. At least I would want the metal shroud to act as a strain relief on the port, so that it doesn't get tugged out like this seemingly was.
Think it could be fixed with a micro-USB and some epoxy?
That square port is USB B. USB A is your basic big flat USB port like what’s on your PC.
you could also try to use a spoon to remove knobs...
Temperature on the solder?
I usually go with 350-370C for regular PCB soldering like this but your mileage may vary a bit depending on your soldering iron and your technique.
I can see the light, but its not recognized on my MAC?
My guess is that the contacts providing power to the USB are still intact, while one or both of the data lines are broken.
link where to get connector please
Links are in the video description.
Grazie!
thank you!
Guys, i found a good trick to get the two volume knobs off: I just used ducktape and rapped it around the knob so i could pull out the knob without damaging the case.
Just wanted you to know
Good trick!
"Rød" , is the colour Red, in Danish.
@@talideon Dunno why I thought they were American.

Anyone have a link for the replacement usb jack?

The link provided is not the same part
Maybe I'm missing something, but original sound seems better than the one from the Rode mic. Hmm..
It’s not the sound from the Rode but the sound through the speaker and then through the camera mic. ;)
@@JanBeta oh, I see. It makes sense now :)
Recapping for the Microphone?? I think you need to get Louis Rossman to show xD Just teasing Jan o/ Stay awesome !
Haha, maybe I should recap it in another episode?! ;)

This microphone for me was a disaster, bought it for 150 euros exactly in late 2022, and few months has passed only and that USB connector is broken, im talking on discord and it goes quiet, or completely disconnects... I opened it like how you opened it, and well, i did it before i watched your video, i was astonished, the build quality is barbaric, found stripped screws, (one of the four which hold the top part on) they just screwed it half way in because it stripped... and not gonna talk about the bad design of the USB connector.. This is just industrial trash.
Wow, that sounds like a very low standard of quality control. Mine was at least assembled properly (apart from the shoddy USB connector). :/ It’s a shame that they put so little effort into the construction. I’m still very happy with how the mic sounds though!
`USB Type B jacks suck ... I've yet have one that didn't get loose and loose connection ... and I've yet to replace the jack and get rid of the problem. It's just a lousy mechanical design.
Gg,I just messed up my whole microphone...
And this is one of the reasons its so cheap
RODE NT USB If you break the mount on these .. I have made a replacement ruclips.net/video/ihB3OkAiLQ4/видео.html
Great repair. Poor design.
that's just crap
I really like detailed repair videos but 18min for 4 solder joints is a little bit excessive...
You are probably right... The most difficult part was probably opening the thing up but it didn't take that long. Sorry if you feel you wasted your time on this!
@@JanBeta I was perfectly happy with the length,
