Another awesome video!! Despite all your plumbing problems!! Great hats for Karyn!! Wonderful yarn!! You made a great color selection!! Hope you're able to have a happy time with your oldest son being there despite the plumbing mess!! 😍😘
Thank you, Ambie! They finished it all in one day so now all we have to do is get a sheet rocker/painter to come out. We were going to paint anyway so it's not so bad.
Hello Margaret, thank you 😁 I did think of using a smaller hook size 😋 I also got your hdc hat pattern from your spiked mesh stitch hat, so I am going to try that also 😁💕 Erica x
Hey Margaret. I really enjoyed seeing your array of hats for charity. I do enjoy your camel stitch beanie, i love the texture it gives. Hope you are staying well. Blessings from Melbourne, Australia ☺🇦🇺♥️♥️
@@sheepishlysharing I've made about 50 in the last 2 weeks on my circular knitting machine for charity. But i do enjoying crocheting them too, just takes a bit longer ☺
I walked out with 7 more balls of yarn from Micheals this week. I just can't stop myself. I think I may have a problem. LOL Just found your channel and I am enjoying it.
Welcome, Shawne! I think buying yarn is a universal problem for knitters/crocheters! I heard someone say that collecting yarn is a hobby in itself... that's true!!
Miss Margaret, So sorry to hear about your plumbing issues, we just moved into our first house and are making some fun discoveries about our new house as well! The joys of homeownership is what everyone says! For your allergies in your new environment , try to get some fresh local honey, it helps you build the immunity to local pollens.
Sorry you're having problems, too! And that's the way it goes with homeownership, for sure! (This is the 7th house we've owned!) Yep... I know about the honey trick but being recently diagnosed with pre-diabetes, I can't be enjoying too much honey! I'll be fine soon enough!
Thank you so much , I was looking around for hat easy hat patterns , for donation too for Cancer patience , I didn't have a charity before , my mom unfortunately was diagnosed with Cancer :( on a trip too the hospital , we noticed baskets of yarn in the waiting room , for people too use while they wait ....so we enquired and yes they take donations! I donated a huge bag of yarn and now I am on my way too make as many chemo caps as I can! You've given me so many ideas thank you Margaret!
Oh, Sheri... I'm so sorry to hear your mom is dealing with cancer. (That stuff is all over my family so I totally understand.) I've never heard about baskets of yarn in the waiting room! What a clever idea someone had! You and I know the benefits of yarn work but what a great idea to introduce it to others!
Thanks you Margaret , I never seen baskets in the waiting rooms either , very much my yarn is my go too right now :) making Mom a nice throw and chemo hats, helping me through ! Have a great day :)
Hello Margaret, thank you i did think that 😁 also I have got your hdc hat pattern off your spiked mesh stitch hat, so going to try that also 😋💕 Erica x
Enjoyed your video...as always... As you know, I am a quilter, returning to yarn, after a long absence... I am amazed at the new yarns now available... I have worked with yarns that were 20/22% wool, and have to agree with you, that they are wonderful. I'm hoping to increase that percentage, with good super wash yarns... You can definitely feel, and see, the difference. Oh yes.. My son is giving me a gift card to our great local yarn shop, for my September 11th birthday... Yay!
Margaret, I am really interested in your super bulky scrap hats, but I am really a knitter. Crochet..not so much. The thing is, I have an enormous stash of yarn from machine lace weight to aran weight. I would really like to convert all of it into hats and blankets for charity by mixing all the colours and weights together in the way you do your scrap hats. Since I heard you say you're turning back to knitting, ☺I wondered if you could do a knitting scrap yarn hat tutorial... super bulky, that is? I found your crochet one with your charts extremely helpful. Thank you so much. Marie from Scotland.
Hmmm.... You're probably more suited for that tutorial than I am! I haven't been knitting all that long! The thing about crochet is it's top-down so it's easy to size no matter what thickness/weight you work with. I'm game to give it a try but I don't feel nearly as confident as I do with crochet.
O Bless you! I will have a bash too and let you know how I do. The thing I find difficult is trying to work out what my strand thickness should be for which size needle. I guess I'm being lazy. I should make some swatches and do the maths. I'll look for some tutorials on that. Isn't utube just a wonderful tool for learning!! There's loads of Bible teaching on there too. Have you noticed? Mx
Reporting in: I did some research and found that I preferred the look of bulky knitted hats in garter stitch; found a pattern using 2 #6 Super Bulky strands and 12mm needles casting on 36 stitches. It fits me perfectly and feels great! HOWEVER, I found purling very difficult with giant needles. I think I may look for a knit-flat-and-seam pattern. www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/super-sized-hat
I love all of your hats. I plan on doing some hats to donate this year. I will use many strands together to crochet, as you have, and also to knit as I have bought a very simple hat pattern for super bulky yarn that is knitted on 2 needles and seamed.I find that knitting flat is easier on my hands and shoulder.
Me, either! Usually the hood on my coat is enough for me as I've never lived in any extreme winter locations! When I rode horses, I wore hats because they stay on through riding and barn work. Now, I wear a hat when I'm going to be out in the cold for an extended period of time which isn't that often anymore!
Love your videos! Thanks for making them! They are fun & informative! I made a double thick scarf on the Addi with 1 Caron cakes. I think it came out very nice, good colors.
I'm glad to know it works well on the Addi machines! I'm hearing that again and again! Which machine did you use and how long was the scarf? So exciting!
love the hats, sorry about the plumbing, hope it is fixed soon...what fun having your kids home for a visit, I don't know how I could handle my daughter living in another state lol
You're lucky to have her nearby in this day and age. It seems much more "normal" to have them move off rather than stay in the town where they were brought up. ALL of my close friends are in my boat. Thank goodness for FaceTime!
I don't either but if my daughter did move out of state, you are right face time is great, Russ and I do it when he has to go out of town on business and we see each other every day lol...I guess I have separation anxiety lol
Oh... you can rest assured it wasn't my choice they move away!! Tyler sent me an article recently about the more education a child gets the more likely they are to move away so he jokingly pointed out that it's our fault! Hahaha! (Maggie has earned her masters and CPA and Tyler is at UCLA earning his masters!)
A great place to donate hats is a chemo doctors office. My aunt is currently in her sixth battle with cancer. She asked me to make some hats for her. After I made several for her, I kept crocheting and have donated several bags of hats to the clinic for other parients. This clinic has not only treated her but my Dad, brother and uncles and even saw my 19 yr old aon during a recent scare. They REALLY appreciate hats of all kind. I am starting on hats to send to St. Jude's in the name of a 13 yr old friend that currently has bone cancer.
Yes... there are many great places to donate your work. Cancer is a horrid disease and, like your family, it's all over my family as well. How's your aunt doing?
Oh, Christy... I'm so sorry. Make LOTS of hats so she'll have lots of choices AND it provides YOU with the the therapeutic benefits as well. Hope you don't mind but I'm putting you and your family on my prayer list. Sounds like you can use all the peace and comfort you can get right now.
Crochet is thicker than knitting hence why most yarn labels have a bigger hook size on them. There are the few exceptions in which the knitting needle size and crochet hook size are the same thickness. Another thing is that yarn labels use stockinette stitch and single crochet for their suggested gauge and single crochet is very dense, unlike stockinette.
Enjoyed your video again...Thank you!! Hope your plumbing problems get taken care of very soon. A new Michaels opened in Conway, AR so I no longer have to drive to Little Rock....yippee!! I did see the Loops & Thread Facet, very pretty. No Caron Cakes though, maybe still to come. Your hats are great and inspire me a lot. I want to do the super bulky hat soon. Also I ordered the Singer New Knitting Machine to try first to see if I want to invest in one of the Addis, supposed to be here tomorrow....I am excited!! I want to make some of the snowman scarves you made a ways back. Take care.
Are you in Conway, Barbara?? One of my daughter's dearest friends is from there! Remember now... that Singer will get the job done but it's not the same experience as the Addi. Nowhere near the quality!
I live in Clinton which is about 45 mins north of Conway but we are a small town so I used to have to go to Little Rock for Michaels and Joanns. Now I can shop in Conway at Michaels and Hobby Lobby. We also have a LYS in Conway...The Twisted Purl. It really is a small world when people connect and see how they are really connected!! LOL I thought I would try the Singer and see if I am interested in machine knitting before I get an Addi and also see which size I want.
Isn't it pretty?! It went on sale and I got some yesterday. So many of the colors were gone so I need to be more "quick on the draw" for the next sale!
That banner hanging showing the infinity scarf made from the Facets yarn sucked me in and I got the colour Peridot and made a brioche infinity for my daughter. She loves it and really appreciated it the day I gave it to her because we had a bad snowy blowy storm that day. My other daughter liked the colours also and said it would match her coat but by then it was set to clearance and that colour was sold out. I don't think she has washed it yet so not sure how it holds up. She might follow instructions and hand wash.
Your videos are so informative and so much fun. I love all your hats and patterns and yarn. Your hair looks good. It is always hard getting used to a new "doo." haha
I don't knit but I love that knit hat you made. It looks so professional! I am currently working on my very first hooded cowl. What crazy voice in my head made me think that working with homespun yarn and cables stitching was a good idea?? I really need to quit listening to those voi es! lol.
I used 1 1/2 Caron Cakes for my Virus Shawl so ya did good with the 2 cakes there Lady 👍 Oh I saw that Bently waddling around, give him a gentle hug for meeee!!!
I still haven't done a Virus Shawl either. I'm rather behind in the trends, huh? Bentley has been hugged for you. (He's so happy that Tyler is home! You should see him bring Tyler his "rat" to play. So cute!)
Sorry to hear your new house has plumbing problems the former owners most certainly knew about. As the wife of a realtor, I hope you are taking corrective action here. He's just been through a similar issue with one of his new home owners and really was involved in getting the former owners to ante up on the remedy cost! Need to stop at Michaels and get myself a Caron magic ball! Those look pretty cool.
Yes, we're sure they knew about it and are making a few inquiries but it's a delicate situation. (I used to do marketing for a real estate firm, btw.) Yes! You need to at least feel/see those Caron Cakes in person!
It's a nice haircut but I can't wear my hair lying along side my face. Even if I were to try and wear it like that, I would subconsciously push it back!
beautiful hats ,I love the camel stitch one.i was only gonna buy 2 cakes but it was on sale for$6!!!only got 4 wish I had more but I wanted to get some Halloween stuff.so my total for this year is 18 skeins.also I just wanted to let you know I still haven't recived my munch pack,i guess its stuck in customs?i didn't want you to think I had it and didn't say thank you.
Oooo.... customs for MunchPak.... that could very well be. I don't know much about international shipping. Give it a little while longer and then I'll write them if you don't get it. 18 skeins! You're the Caron Cake Queen!
Hey Margaret! Of course I love all of your crocheted hats, but I really fell in love with your light blue and white knitted hat, but I don't know the first thing about knitting...just out of curiousity, do you have any recommendations for people who have some tutorials for people like myself who would like to learn the basics of knitting as well? I haven't ventured out to learn about the Addi yet, but I'm sure I'll get there soon enough!!! Have a great day!!!
I love to crochet but I truly prefer the look of knitting! My biggest tip re: learning to knit is to watch A LOT of different videos! Certain teaching methods will just "click" with your particular brain. They say that Continental knitting (working yarn in left hand) is easier for crocheters and that was certainly true for me. Just keep trying. It took me months before it finally clicked!
Yes! I do that, too! It's very rare that I'll buy big box store yarn at full price. (Nice yarn at the LYS is a different story because it rarely goes on sale... but then again... I rarely buy it!)
Enjoy your visits. Quick question...did you have to use DPN's for the decrease on your hat? Still afraid to try them, but would love to knit a couple of charity hats. What size needles did you use? I am still a newbie knitted. Enjoy your day, doll! Ciao Nikki xoxox
Either DPNs or Magic Loop with work but yes... you'll have to chose something to get those last decreases. There IS another way to do a gathered hat (too hard to describe here) but I haven't tried it yet. Ummm... I used 4mm with a #4 worsted but that's smaller than average. It all depends on your gauge.
It was so fun to see your video Margaret, I will tell you to not buy the facets yarn I know it's really pretty and I've been tented to buy it but I have heard from customers that while they've been working on that yarn it tends to peel and fluff everywhere even though you're still working on it and it gets really Pelee like that here so you can rip the hair that so if you want to you can buy the fact that the arm but I have that issue.
Well... too late! I bought some yesterday! It IS a roving type yarn so I would expect it to be hard to rip out but we'll have to see. (I think you had some auto-correct issues because I can't figure out that last part of your message: "so if you want to you can buy the fact that the arm but I have that issue.") Clear that up for me as the suspense is killing me!
I have been tempted to buy it but I heard from customers I tend to peel so I haven't bought it , but if you want to you can go ahead and buy it.I think that's what the AutoCorrect messed up sorry
We do not have a Michael's. I was wondering about Caron cakes and the percentage of wool because I sensitive to wool. How do you keep your hands from drying out when working with yarn so much.
Caron Cakes are 80% acrylic/20% wool. Working with yarn doesn't seem to be a drying problem for me however, putting my hands in water will result in VERY dry hands afterwards. Since way back in my college, I started using rubber gloves to do dishes/clean, etc. I use a good lotion after every hand washing. (I keep some in my purse. Curel and Gold Bond are my favorites.)
Hello Margaret, do you use a specific hdc pattern for your hats? Whenever I try a hdc hat out it always seems to go wrong for me 😬 the increases seem to be too much? When increasing in the normal way for the round 😣 Erica x
Margaret Olander I didn't notice. I usually knit while watching your videos so maybe I doing something that had my attention. They're all so cute though.
Well, my goodness... I rattle on for 20-30 minutes at a time. I certainly don't expect people to be mesmerized by my every word! I'm still amazed that anyone watches at all!
Margaret Olander I like to listen to people on knitting channels talk. It's good background noise and it doesn't bother the other people in the barracks.
Thanks for another very inspirational, informative video. How do you find the time with your busy life?? Just want you to know I love your hair. It always looks great.
SMargaret, have you done a kit tutorial on a basic adult hat, if you haven't would you consider doing one for id new knitter who want to make a hat for winter in 4 ply
There are already some great ones out there on RUclips, Marilyn! Put "knit beginner hat" in the RUclips search hat and see what pops up. I'm glad you want an adult hat because those are easier because you can use a 16" circular (no seaming necessary). Ruby Steadman has a great video for a basic hat in 4 ply PLUS she shows how to change colors! (You certainly can ignore the color changes for your first hat but it's a good skill for later.) ruclips.net/video/pN7POmYDPb8/видео.html If you want to use straight needles, Knit Picks has a good video: ruclips.net/video/ZEqNhrMJDBM/видео.html but of course, you knit this flat and them seam the 2 ends closed.
Wait... That Ruby Steadman video is knitted flat. Here's one using worsted weight (4 ply) and circular needles: ruclips.net/video/J0kG10YbKh4/видео.html
Poor Margaret! You do look traumatised by your plumbing disaster. I hope everything gets sorted soon. I am so jealous of the Caron Cakes! We do, of course, have 80/20 wool/acrylic blends over here, but nothing in that kind of colour variation. To me it looks perfect for either knitting a Linus shawl or crocheting a Virus shawl. I may have to ask a couple of my American friends to send some over for me. I saw it on Ebay for £15 which is something like $20 ish? I do like your hats. Now I can more or less knit hats I've discovered quite a love for it. You're donating some, and Jan Carruthers is starting some, so I can't be left out. Goodness knows I've plenty of DK left over. I shall have to find a local charity.
Until now, things like those Caron Cakes were found only in nice LYS or ordered from indie hand dyers! If you really, really want it, you may as well order it from Ebay because by the time your American friends ship it to you, it will cost the same (or more)! International shipping is so high! And don't you sometimes have to pay extra when it gets to you?! I can't remember the details about that but I remember Jan explaining it once.
I believe postage has got quite expensive over there. It's not cheap here either! Yes, we have to pay Value Added Tax on certain items, which I don't think you have i the USA? So when we order from companies in particular, Customs adds the VAT. It's really complicated! I was watching the Crochet Crowd's video about the cakes and apparently it was only meant to be a 3 month limited edition yarn. Like you say, it sold out so quickly because it's similar to those gorgeous hand dyed yarns, but at a really affordable price. Apparently they've extended the production to a year now due to demand!
Skipping is usually due to your tension. Don't use that useless "tension guide" but hold the yarn with your left hand instead. AND make sure you've affixed the machine to the table in some way. It really needs to be still to keep even tension.
I think it's a nice haircut but I can't wear my hair lying along side my face. Even if I were to try and wear it like that, I would subconsciously push it back!
YAY! a new video and more hats!
😍
Love the 2strains of baby yarns ! Great information! Love the look of the WASHED hat !

Your videos are so informative and so much fun. I love all your hats and patterns and yarn. Your hair looks good. It is always hard getting used to a new "doo." haha
Well, thank you! And yes... this doo is hard to get used to. I asked for "the same thing you did last time" and yet this is what I got. Hmmm.....
LOL You're so funny. That pesky word Worsted gives me trouble too sometimes. Beautiful hats! :-)
Yes... I have lots of pesky words in my vocabulary!
Hahahaha...ME TOO!! LOL
I don't knit but I love that knit hat you made. It looks so professional! I am currently working on my very first hooded cowl. What crazy voice in my head made me think that working with homespun yarn and cables stitching was a good idea?? I really need to quit listening to those voi es! lol.
Oooo.... sounds snuggly warm! I'd love to see the finished product!
So cute!)
anything with a wool blend is so nice to work with and so soft I would sleep with it if my kids didn't like th3 feel if it as well
Agreed!
I feel your pain with the new hairdo. I hate that style on me too. love your hats.
I guess I didn't explain my self right,i have only 4 cakes but I only have bought 18 skiens of yarn in total this year
Hey Margaret!
I love your video. I'm a bargain shopper as well but if I see a yarn is like I will purchase 3 different colors.
Mikey... Of the Crochet Crowd...just posted a video re, the Caron Cakes... Very informative...
Premier yarns has hopped on the cake craze and has started making their own all acrylic version called Sweet Roll. Same price, but less yarn I think.
I love the spiral hat! Thanks for the video! =)
Thanks for watching, Annette!
Margaret, do you have Ollies near you. They have some lovely Vannas Choice Tapestry yarn for $2.99 and it is awesome on Addi.
I've never heard of Ollies so I did a quick search and there's one about 50 minutes from me. I may have to visit! Thanks, Jewel!
I have been tempted to buy it but I heard from customers I tend to peel so I haven't bought it , but if you want to you can go ahead and buy it.I think that's what the AutoCorrect messed up sorry
love your camel stitch slouch hat ms margaret. can i ask how long it is?
Ummm... I just followed the pattern. I think I said, "continue for 9" before starting the decreases" so maybe it's about 10" long (?)
Curel and Gold Bond are my favorites.)
love your hairstyle. thanks for your videos
Hahaha! Thanks for the hair compliment... didn't ask for that style but there ya go! And thanks for watching the videos and being a part of it all!
The train track stitches... are they called the camel stitch or train track stitch?
Never mind.. lol I should have been a little more patient lol
Hello Margaret, do you use a specific hdc pattern for your hats? Whenever I try a hdc hat out it always seems to go wrong for me 😬 the increases seem to be too much? When increasing in the normal way for the round 😣 Erica x
You may need to go down a hook size.
Margaret have you seen the new Caron Cake "rivals" yet. Premier has started making their own multicolor cakes in 100% acrylic. It's called sweet roll.
Yes, Taryn... And I even mentioned them in this video! I must have bored you to sleep during that part!
Margaret Olander
I didn't notice. I usually knit while watching your videos so maybe I doing something that had my attention. They're all so cute though.
Well, my goodness... I rattle on for 20-30 minutes at a time. I certainly don't expect people to be mesmerized by my every word! I'm still amazed that anyone watches at all!
Margaret Olander
I like to listen to people on knitting channels talk. It's good background noise and it doesn't bother the other people in the barracks.
Barracks? Are you deployed??
Thanks for another very inspirational, informative video. How do you find the time with your busy life?? Just want you to know I love your hair. It always looks great.
I make my day end at 5:00 if possible. After dinner is yarn time!
Here's one using worsted weight (4 ply) and circular needles: ruclips.net/video/J0kG10YbKh4/видео.html
thanks Margaret. good morning
Oooo.... and this one is good, too: ruclips.net/video/_BNZx2Nt8Ng/видео.html
I bought the knitting machine from Michaels and it is skipping what do I do
Skipping is usually due to your tension. Don't use that useless "tension guide" but hold the yarn with your left hand instead. AND make sure you've affixed the machine to the table in some way. It really needs to be still to keep even tension.
How do the Caron Cake yarns work on the Addi?
I, personally, haven't tried it yet but others have with great success!
Thank you for sharing
I drank the kool-aid too Margaret. Bought the last skein of Caron Cakes today on sale at my Michaels.
It was hard to resist! I totally understand. Now I need to figure out what to make with them.
Another yarn addict. We can quit any time we want... : )
Yes... yes we can. Obviously, we just don't want to. The end!
Awesome hats
Thanks, Kimberly!
Yay! a new video
: )
Yay! Jacob is here!
love all the design hat
Thank you, Joly!
i am beginer crocheting
i love your hair
Oh! Thank you Dorothy! I'm in need of a haircut so I'm glad it's not looking too overgrown!
I like The Peppermint to be vary Much ..Aleta Sneed
Ugh, I hate hair "points" that fall forward!!
I think it's a nice haircut but I can't wear my hair lying along side my face. Even if I were to try and wear it like that, I would subconsciously push it back!
I make hats and blankets to donate to cancer patients always looking for good deals
Me, too! I try never to pay full price for big, box store yarn! If we can get the same thing for less, then that's more people we can help. Right?!
We have great sons!
Yes we do!
