Transforming Melamine Wardrobes to Shaker Style with MDF

- For this third bedroom project I'm doing a quick and easy DIY makeover of these melamine wardrobes that came with the house, with cut strips of MEDITE Clear MDF, glue, and primer and paint. This is about as 'faker shaker' as you can get but I don't think the end results are discernible from the real thing 😁

Was this done during lockdown? It was and I'm aware that in making internet videos I should be vaguely responsible so here's the story:
So after my friend Steve helped me with insulating and plaster-boarding my garden room, he caught the DIY bug (okay, bad phrasing) and went on to become a trained electrician for fun. Legend.
So he was over in his tradesman capacity doing the electrics in the bedroom and helped cut the MDF as a side job; so all within the rules. More importantly (in my book anyway) we had both isolated for 10 days before, especially us as we had been to hospital to deliver our little one. It's a boy! 👍 - Хобби
Congratulations mate!
When you mentioned Medite MRMDF - I was going to say this has turned into the Peter Millard channel - but with less tools. Then you mentioned Peter's channel!
Ha. Far fewer tools, far less skill, jack of all trades - but it keeps me entertained 😬
Couldn’t agree more about being confused about building materials previously... now i find it so interesting to research.
Top job on the wardrobes - I never would have thought of that!
Many congratulations, Ali!
I'd reeeeally like to see you chase in those sockets. Like you've shared, I find electrical so often holds me back in any project and I can never be sure how to approach it. Your style of teaching and presentation is so thorough that I'd really dig it to see you work on plugs, circuits etc. As long as you felt safe to do so!
I’d absolutely love to talk through it all in detail Gar. The problem with electrics is that you don’t know what you don’t know and if I missed something I might put someone in danger. Hopefully in future I can tackle the topic, at least the simple stuff that a non electrician can do without regs 👍
@@AliDymock That's exactly been my issue with it too. Cheers pal. I'll keep a look out. I love your approach and will be doing my garden room this summer, all being well!
Congratulations! Thanks for all your fine work.
Congrats on the addition to the family. You clearly spent your lockdown doing something productive! So did I. I built an Ali inspired outbuilding!
Haha. Great lockdown project! And thanks, it means I have to speed up work to the house.
Brilliant, I’m going to have a go😉
Fantastic! Congratulations to you both 👶🏼👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you!! 😊
Congrats on the baby Ali. Always good to get a video from you. Look forward to garden room updates. Cheers Nic
Thank you Nic
Thank you for making videos
Really nice job.
Congratulations on the boy Ali 👍😊
Next Project - Airtight Diaper disposal bin 😂😂
Thank you! Ha, I trusted that to Amazon but a nursery should be on the cards this year :)
Congratulations!
Also, great work on those wardrobes, what a transformation!
Damn ! Missed first again !! Oh well. Cheers Ali. Another great, informative video.
Next time Preshant!
Wardrobes look great Ali. Pick up a hand held spray gun for painting woodwork. You will love it for the time saving, back ache, knee ache not to mention the finish you get with it. Doing my place with it and it’s a god send.
Any particular model you'd recommend Danny? I really hate painting so anything that makes it quicker...
@@AliDymock sure I have opted for the old bish bash Bosch! All that it be a little old now. PFS 3000. Not the best on the market as there are many out there. The best is a brand called Graco which is the market leader. But for DIY the Bosch is a good compromise between cost and performance. Hope it helps Ali. It makes painting that little more fun and interesting. Another little cheat for your prep works, use a multi tool sanding head for doors, shirts and arks or even staircase spindles. Makes sanding down quick and more accurate in the corners. Peace out dude. 👍🏻
You can stop parts sliding about during the glue up by adding a few grains of fine sand along the centre of the joint. The sand gains stop the surfaces sliding over each other and just dig into the MDF surface when you clamp so as not to leave any gaps.
That’s genius! 💡
Never would have thought of that. Next time I’ll give it a go.
@@AliDymock You can also use salt/ rocksalt !
Awesome job. How long did it to to upcycle the two doors?
Good job Ali - Zinsser products are fantastic. The 123 primer is a great all rounder (water based) but the BIN (shellac based) is the best for troublesome surfaces like melamine and stains like water/ tobacco coverage. I only use the BIN when necessary because it's a pain to clean the brushes (use methylated spirits the purple stuff). I throw used mini foam rollers. Hope this is helpful to some people 👍🏻
Thanks for the tips Barrie, it is helpful. i threw away the foam rollers and unfortunately the brush because I couldn't get it off with white spirit. Purple is the way forward it seems, you're a star. 👍
Hey, just wanted to check the BIN primer you used - is that the one that normally says to follow with an oil based paint? If so did the water based paint you used go on OK? I had an issue with separation before.
Ooo in reply to your comment to my comment (knowing how hard it is for original poster to find subsequent comments!) apropos of roofing garage and/or garden room..I've a cunning plan for lifting the damned heavy EPDM on yer own....brace along top edge for your feet, attach 2 ends of stout webbing/ratchet straps type stuff to said brace and enough length for twice height...and ROLL the bloomin' stuff up to the top! Overthinkers of the world, untie. Unite. One of the two!
Congratulations to you both! Who'dve thunk that might happen when you moved?! (We all did, lol) So...what happened to the extensions and planning permissions, etc? Lockdown victims of no council staff?
Haha yeh it was the main motivation for getting the house, kind of obvious. You just never know if it will happen so you can't say. Fortunately, being a man with a predominantly male audience, no one brings it up!
Yeh it's all on the cards, just have to save the money for them. But the plan right now is to do the rear extension first. I just need to learn a lot first. I think it will likely be spring summer 2023. Got lots to do first incl re-roofing the garage and perhaps another garden room 😁
First Comment ;)👏

“Who knew baby wipes were so useful” well any parent, however any DIY er may not know that a good mask that blocks volatile organic compounds can also block out the worst biohazard nappy odours. Congratulations on becoming a Dad mate.
😆 I'll have to try that one. Before I got used to the screaming, I found my Screwfix ear defenders pretty useful too!
