I was told to do a presentation about Scotland and since we couldn't add videos I look at your videos and learned how to do it in one day. It's not perfect and I don't have the clothes but It's amazing how well you teach! Thank you so so so so super much with a cherry on top!

god i hate it when everyone becomes a critic, i do ballet and sometimes i see an amazing leap or pirrouette and there are a hundred comments suggesting how to improve. This chick is GREAT, nice technique, just because shes on youtube doesnt mean she has to be a perfect dancer!

Thanks for the great demonstration. It has been really helpful for me in assisting my young daughter as she is learning the fling and I didn't know the dance well enough to help! Thanks.

Thank you for this video. I'm just learning to dance and having this to reference when I'm not in class is extremely helpful. Cheers!

Yes, a man can do this dance. My friend, who is a male, is in the Highland Lassies at our school. (Our school is the Scots.) So technically, he is a Laddie.

@anniej1961 I agree. In the crossover step, she could also be doing a front-backstep instead of just changing feet.

Men DO dance Flora and Lilt! (First step of Lilt looks odd, as arms are in third, so the dancer can't really look at the judge in the same way that female dancers should.
The surprising thing to me, though, is that men can apparently dance the Village Maid (though I've not seen it).

  • @moominpic

That's great. Are the men's dances and the women's the same? Can a man do this dance?

Go to ITunes and put in highland dance music. The one you are listening to here is the Fling. You can also Google Highland dance music.

Both "lassie" and "laddie" are Scottish words meaning "girl" and "boy".

I was being sarcastic... There are two versions of the Cross over. There's the plain one (through third aerial) and the one with extension (through second).

well done, but i noticed that on every turn your point was heavy, almost like you are trying to push yourrself around. Also on the cross over i was always taught to acually cross-over..as in right foot second, third rear arial,round-the-leg to third arial spring left foot third rear arial, and toe in third..just wondering if there are othe ways?

The instruction is excellent. Nice technique. The text at the bottom obscures your footwork, making it difficult to follow. Perhaps a smaller font or placement at the side might be best.

I have no dance background at all, so have no idea what "third aerial" position is or any of the other terms that she used. This video is supposedly for beginners, and yet expects a prior knowledge of dance terminology.

I do both and it's damn hard at first, but once you build up highland in your mind, they kinda stay separate and you can lead a perfectly happy life as a highrish dancer (see my channel name? hahaha)!

  • @highrishdancer
    @highrishdancer 15 лет назад

Absolutely. Check out my vids. There are also some great vids from the SDCCS this year of David Wilton and Dan Carr doing several national dances using boy arms.
The Lilt and Blue Bonnets have prescribed "boy arms" but the other national dances are up to the boy and the teacher to decide what arms to do.

A small group of us taught ourselves from the books since there were no teachers in our state at the time. Some of us made it all the way to Premier, which we didn’t think was too bad.
