FreeCAD - Create an edge linked to an external geometry

- Sketching from object faces and connecting sketches in two planes is made easier using the "Create an edge linked to an external geometry." Here's how to use it.
There are little things I was doing the extremely difficult and time consuming way that you just made clear and simple. Thank you for making a clear, easy to follow video. FreeCAD is particularly difficult to find good information on (at least that has been my experience) relative to some of the other options out there, but is still worth learning. Please, keep making these short videos. You are doing an excellent job of it. The information in this video will save me at least a few hours just in what I need to get done today, and make any of the files I publish for others infinitely more usable.
I did the simple construction from the video - rectangle in Sketch and arc in Sketch001. Before adding external geometry both shapes are visible in 3D view after opening any sketch (and of course only one of them is editable). After adding the external geometry both shapes are still visible in the Sketch001, but the arc disappears form Sketch, there's only a rectangle. Any ideas why?
Thanks, this is extremely helpful 👍
Thanks. Looks so easy.
However, I find that I often (usually?) can not make the other geometries visible when I want to do something like this. It is like I am not understanding how to manage the visibility of other sketches and bodies well enough to use this tool. Any advise?
OH - you have the same problem! I too am constantly going round and round in circles. What can we do?
when I hover over the edge it does not turn yellow. I have no idea what I am doing wrong
True, the yellow dot does not come up with this command
I wonder if you are trying to link to a different body. I think, and I have yet to verify, that you cannot use external geometry to link to a different body - the sketch that you are developing must be in the same body as the pad that you are trying to link with.
If you have a difficulty to see the vertices(the endpoints, center points etc)) because they are too small, you can control the size of them(not individually only as a whole in recent and future sketch. In COMBO View switch to MODEL View, now click on any Vertice/Point, then on very very bottom of Combo view (where you see switch between View and Data click on the View and in the table above search "Point Size" field You can increase that number. I use Line Size (right above Point Size) number 2 and point size number 8. But you can do test and have any numbers you like. It is very probable, that the size of the line or points(vertexes) are not going to be changed immediately. You will have to save the file(no need to close the application)-just save and exit only this file and open it again....now the points/vertexes and the line sizes will be changed and it will be saved in the settings of the system, so any time after that the system will use it..... Good luck!
how does it work with STL models? I have already converted the model into a "refine shape" under "Part" and would like to draw helplines on the imported model, but that is not possible!?
So sad that external geometry from another body does not work
here is a description, but it is hard to understand in some important details: ruclips.net/video/AvKi8sOd4v4/видео.html
This is not external geometry but internal.
The software people named the command "Create External Geometry" (shortcut G,X). If you have any solid body displayed on the modeling portion of screen, click on this command icon or use a shortcut to create new duplicate of the geometry you want .I e. If it is rectangular body, clicking on any edge, it will create new duplicate edge of violet/purple color in Sketcher, which can be used as reference for creating actual duplicate of the same line by using line command and locking on endpoints of that reference piece. ...It can also be another geometry like circle, elipse etc.
