Thank you for this upload. I enjoyed your obvious enthusiasm, but as you seemed unfamiliar with what you were looking at, wondered why you did not avail yourself of a paper Oxford City Guide ? I wished I were walking with you, to point out the history as we went along :) As an Oxford academic ( retired ) of some 30+ years, and alumnus of Merton College ( est. 1264 AD ) to do so would have been a pleasure . The ' round building " by the way is the Radcliffe Camera, now part of the Bodleian Library. The ' cemetery ' you noticed is within St Edmund`s Hall College, the de-consecrated church now the college library. Anyway, it was a nice walk, so well done - Oh, and yes, the narrow metal gates you encountered were designed to specifically deter cyclists :)
When the early universities were founded, they were religeous foundations - some to train their own clergy some to educate the poor (and some the rich...). Accordingly they all had chapels (to which you refer as 'churches') I guess everyone went to chapel each day - so the building practically had to be onsite- within the grounds of the college. I think (don't really know) that modern universities which may have separate constituent colleges tend to have only on chapel.
I enjoyed your video, Foss! You should have gone in the covered market because that was established in 1774 and is actually quite small and you can’t do a whole video on it I wouldn’t think. Take care from Atlanta, Georgia! Sean
What a shame it's not live...It's all very confusing as you were here live several days ago (but on a slightly diffetent route) and I directed you to the walks nearer the colleges.
Wow beautiful historical buildings. I heard about Oxford but never been there. This is amazing tour. Thanks for sharing. I’ll come back for more 😍👍🏼
