I want to make it clear to folks that we still don't know with 100% certainty whether or not there was an intentional tuning change. I sometimes think maybe it does sound a bit different, but this unit shipped with the latest firmware so I didn't get to test before/after and I don't have an old unit in to compare subjectively. I also wouldn't trust auditory memory for this since it has been a while since I heard the old unit. FWIW, the treble still sounds uneven and harsh with this current unit, but an exact difference for the ear gain is really hard to pin down. The other thing is that even if there is no tuning change, it may also be a case of the leakage compensation behaving differently to how it was before. If I'm able to get an old unit in, maybe I can get to the bottom of it.
They have on purpose. I went back and looked at past firmware updates. None of these AirPods ever get the same firmware. They have different specs. But now you take the AirPods 2 and 2. AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Max and give them all identical firmware. I worked in the aerospace industry. I loaded firmware. This is on purpose.
The worst thing is that the new usbc version don't have cable support, so unlike the old lightning maxes, you can't keep them alive as regular headphones anymore

I don’t know how it works on the USB-C version, but on the Lightning version, you could never actually use them as headphones _while_ charging. They did not accept USB audio via Lightning if you used a regular Lightning cable; rather, they made up some special 3.5mm to Lightning cable that is solely useful for the AirPods Max and actually results in donig an analogue-to-digital conversion and then back to digital-to-analogue, as it has to go through the same DSP. That cable does not provide any power, so you are still at the mercy of the battery.

A deep dip like that can be a notch from cancellation. In such case the sensitivity at the bottom of that dip can be so low, that bringing it up would eat all the gain from it's amps and also bring up all the distortion and noise the headphones have. It's not worth adressing.
The subjective is just so tough for me personally. The Sundara, as an example, is almost painfully shouty to me, but I get none of that from my APMs. So hearing you describe them as having that quality is hard to square, just conceptually. Could just be coping lol
I would have liked for you to talk more about the technology Apple marketed these on. Their designed dynamic driver. Did that do anything for music and shows in spatial audio compared to other ANC headphones? The driver’s dual-neodymium ring magnet motor. Supposedly inspired by floor standing speakers. I can tell you that motor is so amazing for shows I watch in spatial audio. And also what matters most of Apple users is likely how good is the dolby atmos and spatial audio for shows and movies and some music.
You’ve probably already tried this but I’m also blessed with genius leading oversized head size. I do feel the upper cup pinch. When I do, I over extend the headband and slowly start working it back in untill the clamp force settles into a more balanced seal. Eventuall they fall into a comfortabel place. I have noticed a slight change in the frequency range, thought it was in my head (pun) until I put my Arya Organics on after a mobile listening and then realized the change in sound quality, while still substantial, seemed slightly less substantial. I also use an updated custome setting in headphone accomidations and I went with the brightner mid settings on both apple track settings using their sample music. Now when I put the maxes on I feel like they give me a little bit more. Again, not my critical listening cans but tollarable.
Interesting! Have you tried measuring at different SPLs? APP2 changes the tuning because of the loudness curves eq that's built in so I'd expect similar behavior with APM too.
That's the reason to use the M-noise test rather than a sweep. It's nice to do all the tests but M-noise at around 85dB should give a good indication of how the FR is affected by dynamic EQ.

This showed cool insights for the loudness curves eq (boosting lows and highs at low SPLs). That's why I'd be interested in seeing this data for the APM to check if the behavior is similar and if that'd change the ear gain region at low SPLs as a single graph at a fixed SPL won't show that info.
There’s a setting that I think only works on iOS that changes the tuning of the AirPods Max based on the data from an uploaded audiogram. While not a panacea, I did find it to make the AirPods Max sound a bit more balanced.

If you remove the ear pads and clamp the AirPods Max to a basketball for a few hours, it stretches the headband sufficiently to ameliorate the overly strong clamping force.
I have a noisy upstairs neighbor in my apartment complex. I can drown him out just wearing the Max because of the secure seal. I rather not loosen them up. I don’t even need to play any music at all even at lowest volume, cannot hear him at all honestly.

There was huge update on ipods pro 2 also, if you use the new hearing test in media playing the card boxines is gone and they sound now as good as galaxy buds 2 pros. And the 3D with taking pictures of your ears the dolby atmos sounds now mind blowing good. Im daily cheking that i dont have my atmos speakers on cos the surround is truly light years better.
Make sure to test after setting up the personalized whatever it's called, ANC on, and using apple music. I tested this headphone before and it sounds like sht unless you do the above. I didnt but it cause i dont use apple music or iphone tho.

REW indicates it as being from 2-4khz, but to the extent that I've called it this, it's been in reference to a REW visualization. Given that we're no longer using REW for visualizations typically, it makes more sense to call it the strongest part of the ear gain, or the upper mid / lower treble transition, because the stricter definition in the science refers to anything above 2khz as 'treble'. But even that is up for debate. Better to refer to the specific band that's being considered. With that said, I used REW for this video because it required some atypical testing methods like m-noise, and REW was just easier to handle it.
I still call this the sliding scale for anc headphones. My AirPods Max has clarity but I don’t wear glasses. Aside from the whine comes with any anc headphones. I use balanced but I’ll consider changing Headphone Accommodations. But my Sonos arc ultra has high treble. Where it’s too much for me sometimes. But it depends on the content. If I listen to something that has bad quality or highs. I just turn down the volume on the AirPods Max.

They have loads of products/or parts of the products which the competitors are charging for unlocking extra hardware features, for years Apple has done none of that, why should they start now? Unlike Resole who was born into fresh air, the Earpods Max was born deep in the bowels of the Apple mothership where echoes writhe in the shadows. Alas my hearing checks out at 8k but from that meagre peak they still sound pretty good.
I wonder if mass drop will make a newer version of the drop panda thx and maybe use the ess sabre dac with the usb c dac mode and implent the dac similar to the the focal bathys usb c dac mode but the newer version of the drop panda thx would have an ess sabre dac and thx amp built into the headphones with no dsp and use the thx amps with no dsp like the current thx panda bluetooth headphones that have no dsp. The large majority of devices use usb c and having a high quality dac like an ess sabre dac, burr brown or even cirrus logic dac in the bluetooth headphones along with a thx amp like the fiio btr17 bluetooth dongle but built into the usb c bluetooth headphones would improve the sound quality and maybe even add support for snapdragon sound for qualcomm lossless audio that certain android phones support the snapdragon sound with lossless over bluetooth when using bluetooth and fall back to ldac when snapdragon sound is not available due to the issues that affect sound quality and bluetooth like latency.
Measurements aren’t perfect, wish more people would just listen to their music and how these headphones delivers rather than obsessing over measurements
But ear canals are all different. Also I guess you still get unfolding, over priced headphones with an embarrassing case! Edit: Sony Wh-1000xm6 that fold like xm3/4, are slightly more premium, with a clearer, less muddy base and BT 5.4 is what I would like. Not folding inwards to put in pocket for me is a deal breaker. I have used my Lightning in the gym for years. Apple downloaded firmware that effects in a negative way with all AirPods with Lightning with the exception for now of the AorPods Pro 2 w/lightning. The bass is very little. I get distortion and shrill that hurts my ears. I will never buy another pair of Apple hearing device. How do i know they did this on purpose. None of the AirPods ever get the exact same firmware. To prove that they purposely reduced the operation. Why? The AP Pro 2 w/lightning and USB-C have the exact same firmware. They are identical with the exception of the charge port. So why not with the Max Lightning and USB-C?
I have two pair of the Lightning versions and have really enjoyed them a good amount more using the Headphone Accommodations “hack” with the eq adjustment to be closer to the 2018 Harman Curve…I tried some others for a closer 2013 Harman that was also nice. I use “balanced” and have -3db at 1khz, +1db at 2khz, +3db at 4khz, and +4db at 8khz.

Have you ever tried the Noontec brand? They were actually my first intro to nice sounding headphones with the Noontec Zoro HD and kinda want to try their Hammo Go, but kinda want a more recent review--all are a bit dated. Super affordable and really surprisingly balanced sound. I honestly remember enjoying them more than I do my current HD600s. I think they might be worth a review for an actual affordable headphone for true beginner audiophiles. They’ve always sounded better than the reviewers reviews would suggest. I believe the reviewers are sometimes clouded by the frequency charts, which only tell part of the story. Real time DSP and firmware updates also affect the performance. I’ve seen reviews where the use of AAC has resulted in lost ‘points’, which is absurd. Then there are the anti-Apple crew; you know, the working class hero reviewers with storage units full of gear. I’ve owned these, the Bathys and the Mark Levinsons (anmongst many others) and these are the best audio performers overall, in my opinion. They are also surprisingly slimline. Add in the build quality, and Apple features and it’s a wrap. The only things I would change are some comfort, better battery life and a reduction in weight.
Because there is no such thing as an “audiophile” device. It’s the same market, and the arbitrary segments have always informed one another. Headphones that are classically labeled as enthusiast sets, like the HD600, were always targeting consumers. Very few manufacturers are specifically targeting the enthusiast segment, like DCA, ZMF, Abyss, etc. And even these brands, minus a few exceptions, started shipping more consumer-friendly products. The Max is no different, especially at its price point. It’s obviously targeting a different class of consumers, so enthusiasts covering the product makes sense. I’m not a fan of the Max, despite owning one myself, but I understand the coverage. I think many of us are hoping for more enthusiast ANC headphones like the Bathys, Solitaire, etc. Currently the best option that has a decent feature set and app, the Momentum 4, has little competition.

Yes and you can tune them manually by inputting each value individually. Not the most intuitive interface, but you can absolutely tune them.
I have upload my audiogram and changed it manually but it has no impact for sound. I have read that this function is available only for pro 2.

There‘s no standard that gives an actual definition of those words. Sticking to numbers is the most precise way of communicating frequency ranges.

About the leakage compensation, does that also exist on the APP2? It’s certainly muddy to my ears.
On the APP2 DSP and compensation are even stronger than on the APM. If you're used to treble forward IEMs the APP2 will sound muddy to your ears.
Knowing Apple they would charge you for a custom EQ update for the app, either a one time charge or monthly subscription.

They have loads of products/or parts of the products which the competitors are charging for unlocking extra hardware features, for years Apple has done none of that, why should they start now? Plus Apple for the longest time is stubborn in trying to give the users what they think is the best and do not change. This goes against all Apple’s past practices.
The only right tuning is the balanced Harman Target. Anything else is an alteration of reality.

One thing I like a lot on the AirPods Max is the 🕸️ 🗑️ mesh earpad, much more breathable than Bose ultra even though is already the most cooling set from rest the market. If only Apple makes a lightweight version with mesh earpad I would immediately get it.

Unlike Resole who was born into fresh air, the Earpods Max was born deep in the bowels of the Apple mothership where echoes writhe in the shadows. Alas my hearing checks out at 8k but from that meagre peak they still sound pretty good.
I wonder if mass drop will make a newer version of the drop panda thx and maybe use the ess sabre dac with the usb c dac mode and implent the dac similar to the the focal bathys usb c dac mode but the newer version of the drop panda thx would have an ess sabre dac and thx amp built into the headphones with no dsp and use the thx amps with no dsp like the current thx panda bluetooth headphones that have no dsp. The large majority of devices use usb c and having a high quality dac like an ess sabre dac, burr brown or even cirrus logic dac in the bluetooth headphones along with a thx amp like the fiio btr17 bluetooth dongle but built into the usb c bluetooth headphones would improve the sound quality and maybe even add support for snapdragon sound for qualcomm lossless audio that certain android phones support the snapdragon sound with lossless over bluetooth when using bluetooth and fall back to ldac when snapdragon sound is not available due to the issues that affect sound quality and bluetooth like latency.
Measurements aren’t perfect, wish more people would just listen to their music and how these headphones delivers rather than obsessing over measurements

Edit: Sony Wh-1000xm6 that fold like xm3/4, are slightly more premium, with a clearer, less muddy base and BT 5.4 is what I would like. Not folding inwards to put in pocket for me is a deal breaker. I just don't get the utterly irrational manufacturer choice. Smaller case too. Happy new year to all, even Apple users !
Nah, the new usbc version don't have cable support, so when the batteries die you can't even keep them alive

Bathys is good, I use it regularly, but true greatness is still several steps away.
Bathys is still the second best sounding BT headphone out there . The first being the Maxwell.

I have used my Lightning in the gym for years. Apple downloaded firmware that effects in a negative way with all AirPods with Lightning with the exception for now of the AorPods Pro 2 w/lightning. The bass is very little. I get distortion and shrill that hurts my ears. I will never buy another pair of Apple hearing device. How do i know they did this on purpose. None of the AirPods ever get the exact same firmware. To prove that they purposely reduced the operation. Why? The AP Pro 2 w/lightning and USB-C have the exact same firmware. They are identical with the exception of the charge port. So why not with the Max Lightning and USB-C?
Something about walking a trail to contemplate nature, while isolating yourself from the outside world to hear music, does not sound right 🤔

Lightning AirPods Max was better because it had wired connection. Not lossless but still there was ability.
I have two pair of the Lightning versions and have really enjoyed them a good amount more using the Headphone Accommodations “hack” with the eq adjustment to be closer to the 2018 Harman Curve…I tried some others for a closer 2013 Harman that was also nice. I use “balanced” and have -3db at 1khz, +1db at 2khz, +3db at 4khz, and +4db at 8khz.

Have you ever tried the Noontec brand? They were actually my first intro to nice sounding headphones with the Noontec Zoro HD and kinda want to try their Hammo Go, but kinda want a more recent review--all are a bit dated. Super affordable and really surprisingly balanced sound. I honestly remember enjoying them more than I do my current HD600s. I think they might be worth a review for an actual affordable headphone for true beginner audiophiles.
A review showing two musicians basically mentioning that theyre as good as you can get for the price--again a bit dated and I think your team would have a more organized review.

They’ve always sounded better than the reviewers reviews would suggest. I believe the reviewers are sometimes clouded by the frequency charts, which only tell part of the story. Real time DSP and firmware updates also affect the performance. I’ve seen reviews where the use of AAC has resulted in lost ‘points’, which is absurd. Then there are the anti-Apple crew; you know, the working class hero reviewers with storage units full of gear.
I’ve owned these, the Bathys and the Mark Levinsons (anmongst many others) and these are the best audio performers overall, in my opinion. They are also surprisingly slimline. Add in the build quality, and Apple features and it’s a wrap. The only things I would change are some comfort, better battery life and a reduction in weight.

What kind of question is this? If it is audio related, especially from big brands like Samsung and Apple then it will most likely be covered.

Because there is no such thing as an “audiophile” device. It’s the same market, and the arbitrary segments have always informed one another. Headphones that are classically labeled as enthusiast sets, like the HD600, were always targeting consumers. Very few manufacturers are specifically targeting the enthusiast segment, like DCA, ZMF, Abyss, etc. And even these brands, minus a few exceptions, started shipping more consumer-friendly products.
The Max is no different, especially at its price point. It’s obviously targeting a different class of consumers, so enthusiasts covering the product makes sense. I’m not a fan of the Max, despite owning one myself, but I understand the coverage. I think many of us are hoping for more enthusiast ANC headphones like the Bathys, Solitaire, etc. Currently the best option that has a decent feature set and app, the Momentum 4, has little competition.
