  • Marilyn Horne's voice seems to start at the center of the earth and end in the ether. Combining power and flexibility, Horne set a new standard and expanded the repertoire for generations of mezzos to come.
Equally celebrated and revered for her concert and recital singing, Marilyn Horne has graced virtually all of the great opera and concert stages of the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala and Carnegie Hall.
The winner of innumerable awards, including the National Medal of the Arts (1992) and the Kennedy Center Honors (1995), she has a second, equally important career as a teacher and guardian of the vocal recital. Through the Marilyn Horne Foundation, which she founded in 1994, young singers receive important training in the art of recital, as well as opportunities to perform.

I adore her, which may sound silly, but she is like a rare, valuable gem. One of the greatest, and certainly my favorite mezzo. No pretense, just honest, heartfelt singing based on a solid technical foundation. Like Sutherland, she was at the very top of her game. Every time I see her I want to reach out and embrace her, as I feel such a connection to her. Lucky are the students who get to work with her.

An incredible soprano and a great interpreter of many especially Rossini, but one of the greatest teachers, I watch her master classes and she is amazing in how she teaches with honest technique advice, as well as the theatrical element of internalizing all elements of the role and becoming 100% convincing that THIS is the role for the artist, and that the audience will absolutely agree.

She was/is a mezzosoprano but otherwise I fully agree with you.

Donald Kramer She was so over rated sad to say.She had no chest voice & her strained top voice was always pushed/ yelled out.In 1976 she was a horrible Ameneris & singing with one of the greatest Aidas of all time.Madame Price just completely blew her away. Her Rossini roles were over rated etc.Sorry my friends but so many of my friends feel the same way about her. @@baritonebynight Oh, baritonebynight, I just love your comment to Arnold. You go ahead, man!!! Marilyn Horne gives me goosebumps and on top of that, she was always so nice and cordial with people putting them at ease while they were overjoyed being around her. She is a great lady and funny too! Also very cool!

I forgot to mention that she was a fantastic, beautiful singer with such warm tones in the music and extending it to her audiences. What a joyful experience listening to her!
