The most impressive thing I in this vlog is popping to the library to do a bit of work when you have a train to catch in about an hour, I’d sit around and stress about getting to the station on time.

Once I spontaneously travelled home during the uni semester (missing lectures to do so) to see my family. My dad died three weeks later and this turned out to be the last time I would see him. I'm 23 as well and I am so glad that I didn't miss that chance, you are never too old for a visit home.

Hi Ruby! Barista here - when you’re making your coffee, that metal thing you use to press the coffee grounds into the portafilter (the handled thing that holds the grounds) is called a tamper and you’re actually supposed to press it into the coffee grounds to compress them. I noticed that your espresso shot was pulling pretty watery and quite quickly, and it’s actually supposed to be slower and appear “thicker” in consistency. The shot should pour for around 20-30 seconds! Anyway, if you can find a surface to sort of balance your portafilter so you can really tamp the grounds (quite hard, give it a good oomph when you press it), your espresso shot will pull slower and will taste a lot better!!! Just wanted to give a tip in case you wanted it. If I didn’t make any sense but you’re still interested, there are plenty of RUclips videos haha. Of course, if you like it your way, then by all means do it as such! Love from Canada ❤️

The best thing about being an adult is that YOU get to decide how to spend YOUR time - it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. You do you, Ruby. When I was at uni I quite often went home at weekends, it was great to have some peace and a change of scenery. Keep on doing what you do 😃

Something I find curious is that in my experience as a Latina (I'm from Chile), I felt more pressured to come home every weekend after college. I suppose that although we go to other cities to study, we do not have university dormitories like in Europe or the United States, and we are also a culture that highly values family, physical union, contact, etc. Many times I wanted to stay studying or go out with my friends but I felt guilty for not going to see my parents or grandparents, etc. Over time I improved it, but it's funny how we put pressure on ourselves.

I always love going home during weekends. It just feels so much more like 'weekend' when I change scenery. I find that if I stay at uni I just do the same things as during the week and I don't feel like I can switch to a weekend mindset, spend time with my family and go outside.

Looking after yourself is important, spending time with family and friends is precious too. Our family has recently gone through a very sad loss of a young relative (not illness or accident)but we can’t be with the family as they’re overseas, it just makes u realise it’s important to create memories and touch base with the ppl you love xx but also to look after yourself no matter what stage of life u are going through.

I really like that you didn't use bg/ambient music in each shot especially the library clip, the serenity and rawness of not only seeing but hearing the surroundings as you did, like you typing on keyboard and when you showed us the view from the window, so lovely, there is something about the quiet melancholy that I find so precious.
I like that you were honest with yourself and your needs, you managed to heal and enjoy yourself whilst also doing the work you needed. No judging here, honestly, what "we should, have to do" is such an abstract nonsense rule that keeps us from our true self and what we truly want in life. You do YOU!
    Wish you best in all!

I’m also like that but it’s really misunderstood by people, like everyone says you should be out partying and don’t understand why you don’t do it. But I enjoy being by myself, quietly working like you ❤

The dynamics of having two living spaces. For five years I had an apartment in Berkeley, and my little house in the wine country, and traveled back and forth on weekends sometimes to do work "in the country", and sometimes just to be with my brothers (who live on the same property). It's a fun feeling isn't it to have two homes? Berkeley wore off after five years and covid was the impetus to let go of the Berkeley apartment and live only in the country. Sometimes I miss it because it's so busy and also such a bookish place, it was honestly inspiring for my writing. I'd never have written my novel without that two-home dynamic. Now I'm trying to figure out how to write the next novel in my one-home situation. Harder than you might think, why? Because environment is everything? Maybe.

Just a fun fact about Catechism, a lot of Christian denominations still use them today to teach children and those new to faith, to help them understand the basis of our faith as well as certain understandings and texts that may be hard to understand. We also still use them in certain denominations as a second Sermon teaching that a bit less formal.

❤ The stigma of going to your family: is that because then you don't study enough? Or because it's supposed to be childish? When I was a student, going to your parents meant studying more than staying in your own (new) home where there are friends and distractions. I'd love to understand the rational behind the stigma your mentioned! (Or maybe another student from the UK can explain 😊)

Going back to your family’s place is like detaching yourself from the academic setting in which you are when at university or university accommodation, hence it is perceived as an attempt to flee from your responsibilities and work and to instead linger idly at home.

    • @nicolad8822
      @nicolad8822 9 месяцев назад

Stigma is the wrong word and nothing to do with studying. We visited my daughter during term time, it was only an hour and half away, and she came home occasionally, usually if there was something with her old school friends in our home town or a family special event. However I preferred she was building a good independent social life at Uni rather than clinging to her childhood. She had a month vacation at Easter, Christmas and 3 months in the summer!

@@nicolad8822 as I distinctly stated, it is seen as an attempt to distance oneself from *academic* duties and responsibilities. If I’m working at the dorms and I go back to my family’s place I am as distant from anything related to university work as can possibly be (within reason), which is why visiting your family when you ‘don’t have a real reason to’ in the middle of the term is rejected by some people.

I think the loudest people who make others feel lame or uncool for wanting to go home in the middle of the school year are the ones who secretly want friends and family they'd want to go home to. People who have good relationships with their family would never shame other people for wanting to visit and see them. Don't listen to the jealous haters

What is the full length of your master's program? In the U.S. a master's is around two years on average, give or take how many classes you take per semester.

Only 9 months :( I wish it were longer x

@@RubyGranger8 I might have gone for a master's if I could have done it in 9 months! 😄Some can do a master's in a year here, but that's overloading on classes. There are some 8 week classes, but most (at least that I've seen) are 16 week with the fall semester going from around late August to December and the spring semester going January to May. Summer courses are offered as well that are 8 week and 4 week. I wish there were more structures like yours.

    I am a 33 yo woman
My favorite thing to do during the weekend, after a hectic week with a full time job, is to go to my moms.
She lives in the middle of the woods, has a huge bookshelf, lots if tea and an adorable dog.
Idc that I'm turning 34 in 8 months, why would I not spend my weekends in a cabin in the woods, cuddling a dog and reading books, just because "it's at my moms house, and I'm an adult"?
    That mindset is just ridicilous

You look so at ease, when you’re at home.
Take all the time you need to rest: you’ve done more than your fair share for the world in recent weeks. Let other people bare the burden for a while.
Enjoy Oxford University as much as possible in the next 4 months, it’s a unique experience.
We’re mostly unaware of these things, at the time. But what fun, many years later.
