  • On December 9, 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas aired on TV screens across America and instantly captured the hearts and ears of a generation. Bolstering the animated special, based on Charles M. Schulz’s immensely popular PEANUTS comic strip, was an engaging score from Bay Area jazz artist Vince Guaraldi, who brought characters like Charlie Brown, Lucy, and Snoopy to life through his evocative cues.
    Working primarily with bassist Fred Marshall and drummer Jerry Granelli, Guaraldi paired inspired interpretations of traditional holiday fare (“O Tannenbaum,” “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,” and “What Child Is This”) with original compositions, including the instantly recognizable “Linus and Lucy” theme, “Skating,” and “Christmas Time Is Here.” The latter song, available as both an instrumental and vocal track, featured young choral singers from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in San Rafael, CA.
    More than five decades later, the Emmy® and Peabody®-winning animated classic has spawned more than two dozen subsequent PEANUTS specials. Guaraldi’s soundtrack, meanwhile, has since become one of the best-selling jazz albums in history, second only to Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, and regularly ranks among America’s top-selling holiday albums every December.

    Almost 60 years ago, this masterpiece of a song was created and was just considered a mere piano piece for a cartoon special. Today in 2021, this song is just as iconic as it was back when the Charlie Brown specials were first being made. Most people you ask would probably know this theme, and it’s probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Charlie Brown. This is one great theme indeed

      It's great that there is more recognition of cartoon music (including eg. Charles Cornell analysis of various cartoon themes/music) because there is some really good stuff out there which almost goes unnoticed. Similarly, I never relaised until I heard jazz cover by The Consouls that vgm is actually so good. The best thing is that this great music is being absorbed by children/youth and hopefully will encourage a higher level of musicianship in pop music which has been in a bit of a slump for a couple of decades now.

    One thing I love about this masterpiece: it's raw. Listen for the little flub at 0:50. Instead of cutting and re-recording, Guaraldi just played through. We don't get to hear that very often these days.

    • @OnlyEdandTheAlmost
      @OnlyEdandTheAlmost 9 лет назад +83

      _"Instead of cutting and re-recording, Guaraldi just played through."_
      Of course he did. But the decision to leave that "little flub" in the final published recording was solely that of the producer, who decided that this live take -- flaws and all -- was good enough. It would have been simple enough to splice in a few bars from another take to cover the mistake, had the budget permitted it. Evidently this take of that particular section of the composition was the best they had, and they went with it, warts and all. That's not to say that the other sections of the final recording were not from other takes. Who knows? A skilled engineer can make several takes seem like one.

    • @BTBHSOHBOY
      @BTBHSOHBOY 9 лет назад +98

      *****
      You misunderstand. I'm not complaining. I like the flub, as I feel it lends humanity to the piece. Or were you addressing "Only Ed and the Almost"? Also, I am very experienced with picking up errors in recordings. I'm a classical composition major, so I listen to everything with a somewhat over-analytical ear. The truth is, in this day and age, there is so much looping and editing of tracks that those little mistakes that "humanize" music get lost. It's still there in classical recordings, but mainstream music has lost its humanity in a lot of ways.

      *****
      For the record, and as a longtime Vince Guaraldi fan, I noticed the "flub" in this particular recording of _Linus and Lucy_ the very first time I heard it. And you know what? It didn't bother me a bit. As a pianist with maybe 1/100th the talent of Vince Guaraldi, I know that mistakes happen. And as a recording and mixing engineer I know firsthand that, in a production environment, choices must be made. I wouldn't call this particular published version of _Linus and Lucy_ a "masterpiece" _because_ it has uncorrected mistakes. It's just a great composition, regardless of any particular recorded (and edited) performance.

    One of my precious childhood memories was watching Peanuts cartoons and listening to the wonderful music of Vince Guaraldi. As a kid I really didn't know what Jazz was, I just liked the songs that were on the cartoons. Now as an adult I of course have Vince Guaraldi in my music library. When I was younger I was a Rock N' Roll snob and wouldn't even consider listening to Jazz. I had forgotten that Jazz was in my brain since a little kid thanks to Peanuts. Now that I'm older and wiser I can appreciate all music. If it touches your soul who cares about labels? Linus and Lucy was the gateway drug that opened my ears and blew my mind wide open to how cool Jazz is. As a fab 50 year old I still watch the Peanuts holiday specials and let Vince Guaraldi's precious music take me to a happy place.

    Charlie Brown: "Does anyone know what Christmas is all about?"
    Linus Van Pelt: "Sure, Charlie Brown I can tell you." [moves to center of stage] "Lights, please."
    Linus Van Pelt: "And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, [drops blanket] 'Fear not: for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.' And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.'"
    [Linus picks up his blanket and walks back towards Charlie Brown]
    Linus Van Pelt: "That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown."

    Remember what it was to be young, when we were all young and nobody we loved was yet dead. Remember the excitement the Christmas Season brought? School gatherings around a Christmas tree singing Christmas Carols (yes, Christmas, not holiday or solstice songs). Remember going skating on a local pond? It may have only happened once as child, but it is seared in my memory, and music such as this brings it all back. Todays youth are missing so much, in my mind.

    • @greenwich1754

      @@youtubeviolatedme7123 I think every generation experiences the same view: Our days were the best. Stuff that we grew up with become cast in amber/frozen in time. We always choose to remember the sweet memories. Every generation thinks that the next has lost something we experienced. For me, it is innocence. The world is becoming increasingly coarse and hateful, and too damn quick and impersonal with technology. For example, todays youth can't imagine a world without an internet, cell phones, and social media. When I grew up, we had dial phones, wrote letters, and grabbed T.V. from an antenna on our roof (Only 3 or 4 good reception stations, but hey, it was free!). Technology has only made our lives more hectic, and the age of "instant information" also leads to premature and unwise reaction/decisions. Slowness of time had its blessings.

    As a piano player learning how to play this piece, it is amazing to hear how flawlessly Guaraldi was able to play it. This piece has so many different rhythms that are quite difficult to grasp and I know that I am trying my best to do so (slightly succeeding). I would have to say that the most difficult part (in my opinion) would have to be the part that starts at around 1:50. It is so difficult because it is different than the rest of the piece yet it matches so well. I hope that I will be able to play this in a way that I feel Vince would be proud of! As Christmas approaches, I felt the need to express my humble opinion regarding this music. Nostalgia pervades the music of Vince Guaraldi coupled with the work of Charles Schultz. For me, Guaraldi’s music brings me back to my youth, to a cold Christmas day, surrounded by the warmth of both the cozy fire and my ever-loving family. To a time of pure bliss, where innocence and ignorance kept my mind at ease, where worries ceased to exist. As a young adult, I carry that longing for the past, who wouldn’t? However, that being said, I know I must carry on, for I will one day be providing the same security and comfort my parents gave me to my own children, and that in itself, is pure joy. So as I sit here… listening to the music of Vince Guaraldi and pondering life, I believe the words of Nick Carrway from the brilliant novel The Great Gatsby best sums up what I’m trying to say:
    So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
    Happy Holidays to all! May the Music of Vince Guaraldi continue to bring happiness into the hearts of all!

    I never knew that Linus & Lucy was a Christmas song. I just thought it was the theme for Peanuts. I've heard this song quite a bit on the radio during the Christmas season.

    Just had a cheeseburger at a classic restaurant in Marin County. My friend randomly airdrops me a picture of a man with glasses. I go “who’s that?“. He goes: “he’s a famous pianist and did work on Peanuts”. I go - Vince Guaraldi? Turns out - Yes! He then points over to the receptionist - who I’ve known for years - and says that’s her father. IMMEDIATELY got me out of my seat. He died when she was 16 years old. Blew me away! Gave her a hug. Tears, you bet. Amazing.

    Always dreamt of playing this song on the piano. So old yet so nostalgic and beautiful for the holidays.
    I love this song.

    I wasn't born when the first Peanuts comic strip or tv special came out. I was born in 99' but I'm with my mom and we're watching It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown! I still watch and laugh at the Peanuts specials. I just love them so much.
