  • Acoustic cover of U2's "A Sort of Homecoming" from the band's fourth studio album 'The Unforgettable Fire' released in 1984. I prefer the longer studio version to the truncated live versions of the song.

    The Unforgettable Fire being my favorite U2 album and what I consider one of, if not, the best album of the 1980s, and Sort of Homecoming my favorite song on the album, I'd like to say this rendition is absolutely gorgeous! This song must be outrageously difficult to sing, and if Bono saw this, he would faint in amazement! Just a wonderful, truly inspiriting, and emotional performance here. WOW! Thanks!

      Thanks. There are a lot of great songs on the Unforgettable Fire but this one was always my favourite as well.

      I agree, Jeremy! Great, soaring vocals by Mike! Recently, U2's been releasing 4k versions of their videos and while watching the ones off UF, I once again noticed how much I love the 1980-1984 era of the band. Inevitably they changed with the extraordinary success of Joshua Tree and then some more with the -- as I'd like to call it -- garish aesthetic of their 90s work. I really miss the youthful earnestness of the first four records!

      @@FrF Yeah Mike not only has great vocal ability but he pours so much emotion into his singing. Just a beautiful vision of this song. Yeah U2 has been releasing so many great remasters or 4K versions of videos. For me, Boy you can really see the Joy Division/Post-Punk influences, and October is just a brilliant album with some of their best bass lines. War is good, but I think UF is where they really peaked. Also, Flood and Brian Eno have something to do with it too. I think U2 completed their sound with that album. Then where to go? So they had a few remnants left of the U2 sound in them, but mixed it with American folk and some pop flair and you get Joshua Tree. Then they were totally done. Everything after Joshua Tree is basically another band.

      Jeremy & Mike: And yet I'll always be a U2 fan :-) You know what's great? I think they have another 20 years of making records ahead of them. I see no reason (other than maybe health and lack of interest on their part) why they shouldn't be active in the studio when they are in their early eighties. So there are still lots of opportunities for them to regain that eccentric and experimental spirit. Last year I found exhibit A why I love early U2 so much in this two-minute interview segment ruclips.net/video/9kboUk9jzJs/видео.html Bono: "This band stamps on pessimism. We're anti-cynics." I had to laugh with excitement at that point :-)

      @@FrF I saw U2 a few years back when they did the whole Joshua Tree album. It was clear Bono's voice is shot now. I wouldn't say completely shot as he nailed the peak parts of Bad, but for most of the show, that powerful high pitch part of his voice was not there. His voice was gone to the point where U2 is barely hanging on. Not a terrible voice, but it just didn't;t have much of the Bono quality needed to really pull off the songs. For some reason, he nailed Bad though. But unlike you, I just am not so into later U2, besides a few songs here and there.

    Is this just 3 chords?

    • @MikeG0420
      @MikeG0420  3 года назад

      Basically yes but you need the different voicings for G and D. Main verse is G6 (3X0030) to Dsus2 (XX0230) - the first string E rings throughout. Then G (3X0033) to Gadd9 (3X0233) plus D (XX0232) to Dsus4 (XX0233) to D (XX0232) to Dsus2 (XX0230). Also C (X32010) all by itself for a couple of times in the song.
