What I ACTUALLY Learned Teaching My Son To Ride

  • My oldest son Teegan is getting a crash course in mountain biking! We hit the road for a two week cross-country roadtrip to ride all of the most iconic spots in the USA with some of our good friends. But the real story isn't the skills that Teegan learned, its the lessons I learned about sharing your favorite things and setting the right expectations from the start. Like any parenting lesson, I made plenty of mistakes, but in the end - it was all totally worth it.
A huge thank you to all the riders who helped us out along the way:
    ‪@SethsBikeHacks‬
    ‪@annekebeerten‬
    ‪@hayden_cavanah‬

Also a mega thank you to ‪@jensonusabicycles‬ ‪@marin_bikes‬ and ‪@LoamPass‬ for helping us make this trip a reality.

The fun factor is so key - keeping it light and easy was the toughest for me, because I wanted to share it with him so badly (and we HAD to keep it moving to get home on time). I learned so much about getting the right setting and the value of making the rides more fun than challenging.

I just bought a new Rocky Mountain Instinct after 10 years on a 2013 Stumpjumper Elite 29. I gave that Stumpy to my 17 year-old son and he is motivated to progress. He was on a hardtail for about 3 years, but he grew 5 inches and wasn't on the proper sized bike anymore. He only wanted to ride gravel and road, and that is fine. Now, he is venturing into some green and blue trails and progressing quickly. Having a capable bike is great motivator for anybody from novice to pro.
Anyways, the best part is spending quality time together and having a sense of adventure and wonder in an otherwise mundane world. Great vid and I hope the 2 of you ride together for life.

    • @SuperRiderTV

Thank you so much! Seeing the country and sharing the ride was such a cool way to spend a few weeks together this summer - and from my experience, I think your son's gravel/road background is going to be a huge help for mountain biking. One of the first issues we ran into on our road trip was that Teegan didn't have the cardio power to do some climbs, and that wore him out for what would've been fun downhill sections. Thanks for watching - here's to many years of you and your son riding together!

@@SuperRiderTV Being tired kills some of the experience for sure. Those gassed out moments seem defeating, but they are really cardio builders. I feel that every time I come back from an injury. Cheers and Happy trails. Those Marin bikes are sweet... I really like my Instinct though.

starting on an ebike is a great idea, 100%. i got back into it at maybe 4 years or so younger than your son is (i guess i am about his age). i did ride a bit as a a kid, but then quit, and i had to relearn everything except the basics (of course i knew how to stand up and stuff that wasnt a problem) from scratch. without emtb i wouldnt have started it again, the terrain here is such that you cant ride without a huge climb in your way. now i still ride emtb, but do crazy tech climbs, nice downhills and stuff.

I've learned recently that TFCC injury (wrist) is very annoying thing and that it can be obtained practising bunny hops without even crashing. -> Recomendation: if you're approaching 40, you don't have life of riding behind you and you plan to do any "landing front wheel first" stuff, wrist strenghtening excercises are very good idea.

    Awesome Story!
Hope you two ride together in the future as Father and son team!
I tried to get my 8 Years old son into trials riding. When he was 3 years old, he rode over small obstacles and 4m long and 10cm narrow bar and so on with his first bike.
He learned very fast and did it so well. (Better than me ( i´m a old guy ~ 40years 😉 ))
I showed him a lot of trials related videos (Ali Clarkson, Danny Mc, and your Channel!).
But i guess it was to much, he was annoyed by the bikevideos and doesnt like to watch them anymore 😅.
He did it very well, but after a time he gets other interests and stopped riding.
After a few years, we get him back to cycling, and did tours on paved ways, also bikepacking on mtb with long distances and he likes to do exhausting tours with his 24" tyres bike.
Now hes 8 and ill try to get him into easy single-trails. We got a lot of them in the nearby wood.
Lets hope hes fine and like to do more in this direction.
My small other son doesnt like bikes at all, but its ok. Its not good to force anything...

Nice! having a father that shares his passion turning into mine is such a dream but it was only just a dream. I envy these kids cuz its a privilege for them to experience it at a very young age and one perks is that you dont have to buy anything, neither do you need to throw tantrums just to have a bike. cuz everything is just being passed and bought since your dad is trying to plant mountainbiking on your head. hahahaha/ lol. As a kid growing up, I really wanted to learn and to have a personal bike but my family at that time wasnt really into it and they find it probably a waste of money or in short wasnt their thing but not until my 5th grade, they bought me a bmx for me to play and practice with then eventually rode the bike on my own. And thats about it. I stopped riding after my bike got destroyed, it lasted for a lil over a year. Years passed til covid hit, sh8 got serious and as we all did, we looked for something to do and there I went back to my first hobby which is biking and year 2022 where I bought a cheap mountainbike to feel the thrill and fun again and now to this day I have a fullsus bike and trying to learn skills that i never get the chance to learn, I am a late bloomer in terms of mountainbiking but I am enjoying it hahahaha tons to learn still. I do hope that your child embraces the sport cuz I know that'd mean a lot to you, it would definitely be a father and son bonding til your age catches up and your knees are already saying NO. LOL.

I have a toddler who is super into biking and attracted to stuff like pump tracks, half tracks (bmx) and basically any downhill he can find. I’m more of a runner and part time road cyclist and don’t have the skills to teach him the bike technique. I am literally running beside him over all the bumps. We live near Fromme mountain (the mountain biking hub in North Van BC, it’s pretty well known). @@SuperRiderTV Ok long text here(swedish is first language so it is hard to be short in another language). I have a video idea for you, inspired by own riding. My most usual scuff and smash is caused by panic dismount of my bike, latest one I managed jump(I am ex gymnast still train basic gymnast skills) over the bars but handlebar hit me so hard in my calf that could walk for a week.
I have kinda no idea how to dismount, it is easy if climb up stuff. But down or just when bike slides to side like off a curbe.
How to just dismount a bike in diffrent situation.
Silly enough pratice trackstand and jumping on and off help me a lot.
There is little instructions on this subject on youtube, most say you learn by experience, but I think it should be basic skill. I am fairly athletic I have tough time so for others must be harder

Like i always treied to keep my pedals level while just rollinng it took me like 6 months conciouis effort even while comummuting too.
