Installing a Rubber Roof on a Travel Trailer

- Though I didn't plan on making a video of it, thanks to the slow speed of the insurance company, I had enough time to film most of the process.
This roof was originally a TPO roof that "ballooned" so bad it ruptured and tore. In tearing it apart, it seems the glue really did not stick to the membrane. We decided to upgrade the roof from TPO to a EPDM rubber roof. The 3/16th inch deck was pristine and in good condition so we just had stabilize and clean it. We also added a solar panel for funtionality and to hopefully breakup any low air pressure at the front.
Thanks for watching!
Never get tired of watching your videos, awesome info and a great way to see how some manufacturers take the extra steps in building quality of their products.
Thank you!
I think I have watched about 4 of your roof replacement videos. Doing mine at this very moment and all your details really help this RV newbie, thanks!
Great to hear! Good luck! :)
I am not sick of watching you do the roof yet! If I was doing them one would be enough. Stay safe and healthy!
Then I will definitely keep making them!
@@AZExpert Yes -- keep them coming! I would rather watch you do the roof than watch me do the roof!
@@AZExpert how well do you clean the butyl tape from under the fridge vent and the rv antenna? Lots of little grooves under there.
Every time I look at RVs I come here and change my mind to a boat. Then I go look at boat repairs and come back to RVs. I'm glad I own a tent.
I always recommend renting RVs unless you'll be using it 6+ months a year
I've seen a few of your videos and you are awesome. Thank you for your style of video.
What I enjoy most about your videos and you. Is your tools. They aren't all high dollar fancy fluke and name brand.... They are an assortment of tools and brands that work for you and make you money.
Somehow tradesman always believe the more expensive the tool is the better their skilled trade is.
Keep up the awesome work!
Thank you. I could never justify the cost of name brand tools and everytime, without fail, I lose the tool truck tools within a week. I have harbor freight wire cutters, drivers, pliers for years and years. I'm very forgetful leaving tools too, so I don't think it's theft, but I think it's easier for people to be honest returning cheap tools rather than $$$ ones. I know good tools make life better, but I also believe a skilled tradesman can do good work no matter the tool.
Never sick of your videos
Thanks!
Another great job with just the facts and the weak points to the unit build and not a whole lot of manufacture dissing .
Thank you. I'm happy to hear you appreciate them .
I've not done a roof or much structural work... I'm glad you made these videos.
Thanks great work!
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoy them!
As usual, total logic, quality, and 'smarts' applied (pardon the pun!) to this job!
All these roofs! It's like AZ needs some covered storage!
Covered storage is a hard to find commodity around here right now.
Another fine Job.No need to get sick of those roof jobs the factories are working everyday to send you more.
That's prety funny. I am amazed these new roofs are having such problems.
Thank you cuz the roof was caved in thank you so much for showing us how to save lots good great job keep up the good work.
dude I love your videos man they are helping me and my partner start our own buis ess successfully. keep em coming brother!!!!!!!!
Your work is always impeccable, you have top notch folks working with you, and yes the Camera man IS the most important job...😂🤣😂, thank you for the video, and you know your in trouble when the front of the truck says Ram, and the side says Dodge...( Old George Carlin..lol)
Thank you, I try to keep the bar a bit lower than impeccable though.....just in case. As a mechanic it is a shop law to harass another tech's vehicle.
great video, Sure like watching your craftmanship, I am here in mesa, My rubber roof is 9 years old now, Will have to look you up in the next year or so.
Thank you! Nine years should still have quite some life left on it, and how on Earth can 2011 be nine years ago already?
Another roof job, Love it
Thank you!
What amazes me is that everybody that does rubber roofs never talks about how to fold the rubber roof underneath the roof insert trim pieces especially at the corner when you have the horizontal of the rear wall you have the vertical of the rear wall and you have the horizontal of the sidewall all connecting at that back right and left corners and yet nobody talks about the details of how to fold the rubber roof and tuck it underneath to be a watertight seal
Really like all your Roof videos ! I'm about to tackle the roof on a project Camper I bought. Although I may just sell as is after I saw the recent cost of wood ! Lol Thanks for sharing all your knowledge...
Even at triple prices, the wood is still usually the cheapest part, I'd say go for it.
Great job James.
Thank you!!
Another good install
Thanks 👍
My RV is a 1976 Dodge Minnie-Winnie and it needs a new roof. You have not done one yet. I think it would be interesting to see you do one. Keep up the good work.
That roof should be bulletproof metal right?
@@AZExpert It is Aluminum but trying to find 20 x 8'.
I usually have shops like Hemet valley RV or All-Rite make the roof and ship it rolled up.
@@AZExpert Thanks for all your help.
That roof material looks too thin and flimsy but I guess it isn't. What about those bubbles? Could they have need rolled out? Thanks for the videos.
I bet they get old however the owners I’m sure appreciate the video. It gives them reference of where things are.
That's very good to hear. I'll keep making them then. I'm sure we'll all discover something new with each one. Thanks!
Also a great selling point.
Thank you so much for the video's. I went under a tree limb that was to low one night and tore the roof, thanks to you video's my wife and I replaced it and saved a lot of money. Two weeks later and still no leaks that we have found. I would like to send some money to you for the help if you have a way I can do it.
That's awesome! I'm glad you were able to fix it
So I'm getting ready to install a TPO membrane and have a question. I see a lot of people using mesh tape for seems, screw and/or staple paths and duct or gorilla tape for the top edge corners. I did a test piece with gorilla tape to see how well it stuck to the newbplywood and wasn't all that impressed, also as I peeled it up I cannsee daylight through it. My question is. Would dicor seal-tite corner tape be a better git for the corner edge? I bought some fornthe vertical front moldings I need to put back and did a test price. ( good thing I put it where it can stay) because that tape stays on and will not come off )
Better than new!
thanks!
great job.
Thanks for the visit
When your plywood is delaminating in some spots and not others, what do you recommend? Seems like removing the affected parts of the plywood is nearly impossible without damaging the styrofoam. Is it ok to overlay? If so how do you conceal the thickness difference? Last thing is the adhesive is still very tacky on the surface of the luan. Is that a problem when I go to put on the new EPDM? Sorry for so many questions but I’ve watched your videos numerous times. You are very detailed and do an amazing job on these roofs. They are a LOT of work. Keep up the great work guys!
What’s the safest way to mount 100 watt ( 16 lbs) 4 x2 solar panels on this type to roof ?
(Prefer not to drill holes bc it’s 15 panels .)
Yes, I think they try to apply glue to a larger area and it starts to dry before they lay the roof down
That's what I saw. The glue on the deck was smooth because it never stuck to the membrane.
Thanks for the vids. never get tired for some strange reason watching roof replacements, odd, I know. What I would love to see at least once more would be the front cap secured on a travel trailer instead of a motorhome. I know, probably the same but in this video you mentioned some curves to the front of the trailer and did you install the rubber under the trim and above the cap? With the curve was there any problems getting the rubber to lay down around the rain gutter spout at the corner? Alo thanks for the detail about rubber vs TPO. If I do mine, I think I'll upgrade too.
No, there was no problem at the corners. I am happy you enjoy the videos. I'll to focus about the front cap on the next one. Thanks!
Jesus man I can see bubbles all over that new roof
There are no bubbles
The rv I am looking at have an EPDM roof. Right now passed inspection in the future when need repair or change approximately how much will
cost to put a new one? Can I put a fiberglass? How well the fiberglass will hold in a hailstorm? What's the cost could be on fiberglass. I tell my hobby that we should have a budget of at least $5,000 for emergency repairs .
Is it imperative to install the molding and other things like vents and a/c the same day as applying the rubber roof?
Chad is getting so famous - they recently named a city/country? after him, in WA State!!!???😘😂🤣🇺🇲
BAHAHAHA, that was hilarious....wish I thought of that, funny shit
I was wondering if Chads signifiant other is named Karen?
Excellent
Thank you so much 😀
un·furl
/ˌənˈfərl/
verb
past tense: unfurled; past participle: unfurled
make or become spread out from a rolled or folded state, especially in order to be open to the wind.
"a man was unfurling a sail"
Thanks for watching to the end. Sometimes our brains wander when we're working.
I think Bob Marley did a song about it once:
Furl it up
Oh, darling furl it up
Good new, I was enjoying the video. Bad news halfway through I got a text Eddie Van Halen died
I was surprised to hear that too, and that I was so unaware of his condition.
Can a Winnebago Filon Roof be replaced with a rubber roof? Filon can be scary due to the risk of it blowing off.
What do you think of that spray on roof Armor stuff?
Seems like the roof is always the root cause of most water damage on Rv’s. Nice to add a solar panel to the job, keep the batteries up when not plugged in.
Was that warranty work? I’d get that spray on roof. If I had to pay for it.
Nice work as always 👍🏼
It was an insurance claim. I do understand the appeal of the sprayed on roof for sure, I'm just more concerned about changing out broken vents, skylights, or adding solar. It has to go back to the spray on applicator each time.
Love your videos! In the middle of doing my fifth wheel. Quick question … what should I use to hide the seams on the plywood? No sure if I tape them if the roofing glue will stick and bond the material to it. I’m using the roofing by flair . It’s the pvc rv rubber roof kit
hiding the seams is not really possible, mesh tape, fibertape, or duct tape is put to protect the membrane from possible hard corners as the roof is part of a wobbly box which distorts constantly.
It's like Christmas morning when I go to RUclips and there is a new video from AZ Expert. Don't you feel bad about the dirty footprints on a brand new roof? I know I do, but what are you going to do?
Thats really a kind thing to say, thank you. Yes I do feel bad about it, often we take our shoes off and walk with socks. But what's strange is I never gave a second thought to walking on a new roof straight from the factory.
@@AZExpert That's because you take pride in your work and they usually already come from the factory with grimy footprints anyway.
How do you handle the sticky left from old roof
Are you putting more self leveling on the terminal bars up front and back 🤔?
Thanks for the video. Is there any concern with some of those little air bubbles left behind? Thanks
I need to put on a PVC roofing kit on my RV. Can I do it wet fit or do I have to let it get tacky?
I just did my camper yesterday, PVC is nice material but hard for me to get all the bubbles out, even this one you can see a few. I did mine in 3rds, first third was nearly dry doing in sun but stuck good, 2nd 3rd was wet but since I was alone and had to walk on it still had bubbles, the last 3rd I did without walking on and just smoothed with broom, it was very wet and still drying but fewer bubbles. Like always if I was to do another it would be much better, AZ is a pro at this, but really I doubt I ever do another roof unless I had a covered shop, wind, rain and sun is a real battle. Have fun, better to have too wet than not enough, just don't walk on it until cured, which I have no idea how long, days I am guessing.
How would you install the same on steel roof in a horse trailer?
Thank you
You're welcome
Where do you order that epdm i cant find any anywhere. Is pvc any good ?
Another great video.
Ok, here’s a solar question.
I’d like to add a couple of panels to my 2004 Monaco. It has the original controller (that was never hooked up) so what panels would you recommend? Coach is pre-wired so panels and wiring to the refrigerator hood is all I need. Thank you.
The Renogy 100watt panels are the best value out there. They can either be hooked up in series or parallel, I'm sure the controller can handle 10 or 30 amps DC.
Do you know where a guy can get this EPDM rubber roof material ? Do you think there are suppliers in Canada ?
Wondering why don’t folks just fibreglass the roof like we do with wood boats?
I’m curious what insurance he is referring to. Because I just bought a fifth wheel little over two years ago and we looked into getting it insured. But we were told not to insure the trailer or that we don’t have to insure the trailer because “the tow vehicles insurance will cover the trailer“ but the trailer doesn’t get towed it sits at the house and I live in it
Tow vehicle only extends liability insurance. Not comprehensive or collision.
What's the best brand rubber roof roll to buy and where do I buy it?
Thanks James, Chad, Micah.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Three questions one were are you located.? Second can you get a RK 147AT-32-A4 ? And what’s the diff between a 136 ,155, I watch your videos and saw the basement replace compressor and you replaced 155 to a 147. My RV has 147. And makes noises and now has gone completely out. I have everything but compressor.
The shop is located in Mesa, AZ. I am not sure about the differences between the models, some are height differences. I deal mostly with the Coleman distributor NTP/Stag for parts.....when the world allows it.
Never get sick of roof videos. Would love it if you would fix my roof. ;-)
Hahaha I get sick of Roofs! :) I'm not currently taking on any new jobs but you can contact Cassone's in Mesa!
Is it the same method for a small slide as well??
Where do you find a dealer that doesn't charge an arm and leg and ask to keep your TT for days on end if your a full timer?
These people are trash. They didn’t even redeck the roof with overlay
Question...Having nothing to do with your wonderful work, What is your opinion on PVC roofs?
So far, I think they seem to be a great product. Very strong and I have not had to replace one.
Great video I’m wondering how long you let it dry before you started doing the edges?
Usually the next day
New glue over old glue?
We put down a luan overlay prior to gluing.
I understand. I will overlay if the old decking is really damaged, I have just seen too many examples of the overlayment delaminating ruining the brand new roof. The water based glue has no problem sticking to itself. Thanks!
What tape product(s) do you use on the edges of the roof and at the joints between sheets of plywood? At the front and back caps, are you putting butyl tape both under and on top of the EDPM or only on one side?
the industry standard is high quality fabric "duct" tape on the metal edges on top, mesh tape at plywood seams. Mostly protecting the membrane from a sharp metal edge and to bridge the gaps of the plywood. I prefer butyl tape under the molding as it sticks better when installing and rubber is a natural gasket material anyway and allows the membrane to be pulled better when on top rather than underneath the rubber. But I know the instructions say otherwise.
What does a job like that cost to get done and how long does it take thanks for the video
A few days, I don't divulge prices sorry and thanks for watching
Obviously I don't know all the details of the insurance claim, but if the cause of the roof tear was "ballooning," that does not sound like it was direct, sudden, and accidental damage. I'm surprised the insurance company paid the claim.
It happened on a single trip. It wasn't torn before they left and was before they reached the destination. I was more surprised as they had just purchased the trailer and only had coverage for a week, so I guess having a good relationship with an insurance company is key too.
What are your thoughts on the Winnebago Navion Fiberglas roofs.
Thanks
The Navion and View, Via type roofs use the same Winnebago method, but as they are narrow and shorter they don't seem to have any issues at all other than common maintenance. My dream small RV is a View/Navion.
What type of roof was on it before this rubber one was installed?
I am sorry. It was a TPO, thermoplastic polyolefin. It is basically a plastic flexible membrane not rubber.
@@AZExpert James, we have a similar situation where the old TPO roof needs to be replaced. Is EPDM a better product ?
Quick question for you. What are your thoughts when the roof deck is wider than standard 4 x 8 sheet? Do you just scab in alternate each sheet?
That is always frustrating. I get with a local lumber yard to find the right length
@11:49 Edit: "3 many screws", Good job guys. I think Chad spear headed this one though.
Chad and Micha did most of the work for sure, I was wrapping up a Winnebago roof, but as long as I "helped" I get credit.
What does something like this cost?.. will insurance cover this?
Depends on the roof. Insurance will normally cover accidental damage or storm damage like a house coverage.
good job , but still see bubbles in the roof
Not bubbles
Great video. I enjoy watching you and your crew work. You really enjoy your job and obviously do it with pride. I have a Winnebago Forza fiberglass roof. Besides making sure the seals are good and covering it, what products do you recommend to help protect the roof from elements?
I'd recommend a wash and wax for protection. You can use paste wax or ceramic coatings too, the roof is the same material as the sidewall.
Thank you!
Not sick of them
Then I will keep making them. Thanks!
Which type of roofing material is the best?
You always want to replace with whats already on there. Any roofing material is ok as long as you INSPECT IT and take care of it
Just bought 2008 Damon challenger. Want to redo caulk. What’s the best product to use? Couldn’t find a how-to video...thx
If I remember correctly Damon Challengers have a TPO roof so acrylic self-leveling(dicor) should be the correct roof sealant.
Thank you. Do I use silicon to recaulk around the ducts and such on the sides, or dicor non-leveling?
yes 100% silicone on the sidewall trim and windows
The poor quality of the manufacturers keep you folks in business...I hate to say....thanks again.
It's true, but I'd rather have less work honestly.
Latex gloves doing their thing at 2:35 LOL
The sound irritates me too. I am a very slow learner with camera and microphone awareness.
@@AZExpert hey, what can ya do. we appreciate the vids no matter what sounds sneak into the them ;)
Hey James, I have a friend who will retire next year, wants a new bumper-pull RV. He asked me what brand. I told him Winnebago, Grand Design. Your thoughts?
Overall, trailer build methods are very similar. Grand Design is good, Heartland, Jayco, are good products too. Winnebago bought Sunnybrook and the build quality is down from Sunnybrook, but better than the other big Indiana RV builders. Most builders cram "gee whiz" technology into a RV that tends to cause more problems, so I always opt for a simple trailer.
@@AZExpert thanks a bunch.
is this a wood roof
Practice makes perfect. But not in all cases
I learn something each time I do a roof.
Is that expensive?
Well it's not cheap. A replacement membrane roof will likely start around $4000-$4500
@@AZExpert thank you for the response. I am considering buying a 2001 29 foot travel trailer. If the roof does not leak, could I roll some type of sealant on it once a year? And do you recommend anything?
TPO is a far better product but you must use 60ml you must glue the plywood and also the underside of the TPO and use a 100lb roller it is a 20-year product as fare as sealant Sika-Fex or M1 another 20-year product the RV industry uses a 30ml TPO product and Di-core which is garbage.
Thanks. I've done literally dozens of roofs now
