Bought a Dodge truck years ago cheap due to a "bad transmission " changed transmission filter and put in new fluid, cured the slipping, ran it for a few years with no problems, clogged filter will give you shifting problems!
I did a drain and fill, then changed out the filter after driving around on new fluid like you said couldn’t believe how dirty the new fluid got !! Thanks for your help
This saved my transmission in my 08 bmw 535xi,I was told it was bad valve body and bad torque converter, did two flushes with valvoline and changed bridge seals tube seals and filter 300 miles shifts like new, thank you Nathan.
Maxlife is the truth especially for ZF boxes. I’ve never been the type of person who blindly follows brand names but you can actually measure the benefits with a before and after of the temps and shift quality.
Thank you for the video. My car hasn't had its ATF changed for 200k miles. After I drained and refilled it, it shifts smoothly. I will do a filter change soon.
I just changed the fluid about a week ago on my e46 with 88,000 miles and I used valvoline max life with Meyle filter feels like new really smooth,it took like 7 Quarts.you can use T45 torx with 8mm wrench to loose the fill plug
I swear your videos are tapped into my brain wavelength LOL! I just got doing the transfer case mount, came inside to look into buying the filter + fluid. Last time, I went with Valvoline D6 and I was happy. I will go with this jug instead next time as it's valvoline, but better :)

Hello, I use on a new/rebuilt transmission (46RH) Phillips VersaTrans , (NOT LV) I also used it on an 300,000 mile 727. I use the Valvoline on a older Subaru with pretty good success, I just changed it (320,000 total miles with about 50,000 on the Fluid) and the Valvoline was still pretty red and clear. I let it drain overnight and had to put 5 quarts back in so the converter must have drained down a bit also. Great video, thanks
Took your advice.. used the fluid.. started the car.. IMMEDIATELY gold coins started pouring out of the tail-pipe.. Ran down to the closest hooker establishment.. Thanks Nathans BMW Workshop!
I did a Chinese pan on the side of the road in New Mexico and the plug hole was a different size. I JB welded the. old plug in. That was 40,000 miles ago. . I used Pentosin. No leaks. It's fine.
Sir.... Grateful. I was going to use Lifeguard ZF6 fluid.. but based on your comments regarding the additives Valvoline has, and the fact that I have a 170k mi.. I'm going with the Valvoline maxlife. Had shudder problems about a year ago. Replaced four quarts (w/ Valvoline) and added shudder fix. Resolved the issue.. but recently started to shudder again and went into limp mode. I'll leave a comment in a couple of weeks to update just for others who have had my similar issue.
I have a 2002 E39 525i with 58,000 miles on it. Pretty sure auto trans fluid has never been changed. I was worried about doing it, but think I will just go for it now.
Soooo reasurring on this video. I did a ton of research before doing trans fluid changes in my japanese cars and that same Vavoline syntetic fluid kept coming up in groups. It made me nervous to deviate from the owner's manual, but serious wrenchers can't all be wrong. I put it in my wife's sienna and one daughters honda rsx. I used the method of disconnecting the cooling line to flush until it ran clean, stopping and adding as two quarts of old were spit out. I even used it in a steering rack I did for a friend. I will need to do my daughters 2006 e83 and I will use this. Love this channel!
Currently have a lexus es330 at 188k, no clue last change. Im feeling the gears shift once in a while but otherwise there seemless. Im going to give this a go and hope for the best. I'll be using the Valvoline maxlife atf Update, completed first drain and fill. Went through the gears 10 times 15 second between each. Drove in naughborhood 0-25, 15min, main streets 0-45 10min, freeway 0-75 30miles. Majority of symptoms gone. Second drain and fill buttery smooth, 0-25 10min, 0-45 10min. Will update on filter change. Didn't realize how sideways the transmission had gotten until the second drain and fill. I honestly can't feel the shift unless I'm watching the rpm's
Stay away from the uro aluminum pan for the 8hp. Zero to60 tried one and it almost destroyed his trans. The filter stem was too small to get a good seal and it was sucking up air and some fluid. I prefer to disco the cooler line, pump 2-3 quarts into a bucket, top off and repeat untill it's clean fluid then change filter, top off and your done
So I believe it’s time to change my transmission oil on my e90 it’s a 08 and has 130k my scan did indicate a code for oil wear on the trans and dif. Oh
I got a 2006 X5 3.0L (5L40-E transmission, auto GM 5-speed). Car only has 72,300 miles. I bought the Liquid Moly Service Kit for it when I bought the car at 65,500 miles. Mainly because I bought the car and it was not running and had no idea if the transmission was ok, previous owner said it was ok, but owning a E39 in the past...brought back doubts lol. Once the car was fixed up and I was able to drive it, the transmission shifted so smooth and effortless (literally like a brand new car). So I never went through the trouble to change the transmission filter and fluid. I don't believe in the old BMW "Lifetime fluid" bs. Should I just do the transmission fluid/filter ASAP or should I just change it before I hit 100k? I'm also thinking about selling my X5 so its one of those things of... should I just do it, or give the kit to the owner to do it?
I bought my 2007 Volvo S40 (Aisin 50-55 automatic transmission) with 93k miles on it. I noticed when cruising in torque converter lock-up, it seemed to slip or unlock and lock up again. I did a flush (remove the return hose from the transmission cooler and pump out 4 quarts at a time) soon after I bought it and ever since (over 150k miles on it now) it shifts beautifully. I’ve done at least 1 transmission oil drain/refill since the initial flush and another flush at the 142.5k service. I’ve used Volvo genuine ATF and Idemitsu ATF (both fully synthetic).
Ah, the old shift flare. A Volvo trans will last a long time if you keep doing what you did. They have no filter so all the crap is constantly flowing in the fluid. In the past I did a full flush about every 50k and sold one with about 275k on the original trans that shifted perfect.
@@NathansBMWWorkshopBeen following you since the tutorials using Castrol. And I’m the one who commented I used the Valvoline on an E60’s power steering (“should” be CHF) and it was A-OK for a few years up to the point mom totalled it. Now that Valvoline says their ATF works in 92% of light duty transmissions made after 2010 what are your thoughts? I’m still a believer but how can this stuff work in Mercon and Dexron vehicles? Will the transmissions still last as long? Maybe the point is to do drain and fills sooner than later like engines and all will be well…
Sorry for the newbie question, I just bought a Jaguar with a 6HP26. The car has 49,000 miles (80,000km) on it. It's December in Alberta 🥶. I want to do a drain and fill now, and a filter change when it warms up a bit. Can I drive the car for a few thousand kms/few months with the factory fill mixed with Maxlife and do a complete Maxlife fill when I do the filter change? Many thanks!
done my 6hp used gen zf 6 life fuild and seals + adaptor then use ista to reset been smooth as was at 98,000 kms then just hit 150,000 kms redon it fuild wasnt to bad .
Older E53 model. I splurged on the OEM $200 ZF oil and filter (a waste in my older car)- was my second go around. Car did have Valvoline in it before - so its all mixed up. Anyway, the fluid change procedure calls for specific temperature monitoring and filling. I have used an infrared handheld point and shoot type temperature monitor on the pan to check the temperatures. Is that representative of a relatively accurate temperature monitoring ??
I've seen a number of videos doing a transmission flush by disconnecting a hose from the cooler. Is that method not possible with the ZF-8 transmission?
THANKS NATHAN! Question: Do you recommend changing the a BMW 8HP plastic pan to ALUMINUM for better durability, cooler fluid and extra fluid capacity? Or is this just GIMMICKS...
I have a 07 e90 with a GM trans. 130k miles, recently acquired. Car is in great shape but not sure the transmission fluid has ever been changed. Is it too late? I’d like to do a fluid change only but will change the metal pan and filter if necessary.
It makes no sense that the manufacturers are saying the transmission fluid is lifetime and there is no need to change it. And I'm sure when they say life-time, they mean lifetime of the warranty. LOL I changed the trans fluid on my E90 335i and it fixed it. Everyone was telling me not to do it...bs.. change your trans fluid.
I have a 700 r4 automatic transmission in my 67 Camaro. The manufacturer recommends Dex III. When I purchased it, it was running on B&M trick shift. Do I need to do a full flush or just drain the pan and add ATF DEX III? Thank you.
Hello, I have an e46 with a gm transmission. It has 150k and I don’t think the fluid has ever been changed. Would it be ok to do a drain and fill with the Valvoline maxlife? Also can I do a couple fill ups and siphons with this stuff in my power steering that calls for atf? Thanks for the help!
Nathan, et al, I have a BMW E36 Automatic 113K miles, atf never changed. Recently, when the trans is cool it is sluggish shifting 2 to 3. After driving a few miles, shifting is normal. If I come to a quick stop and then accelerate, there is some slippage. e.g. Quickley coming to a stop at a red light and then promptly turning right on red, the trans may slip. Two trans shops said not to do anything because changing the aft and filter will make it worse. You debunk this in your video. I just wanted to make sure that changing the aft is the right thing to do with these symptoms. Should I just add fluid, drain the pan and add new fluid or remove and replace the filter? What aft is compatible with the original oem aft? Thanks.
@BJ-fk9sq I ended up just draining all the ATF that would come out by just removing the pan plug. Did not remove the pans. Filled it as recommended. This solved my problem and probably have an additional 8k miles on it. So far so good. I think I will repeat the same thing soon.
I was told by BMW dealer that they do not recommend changing transmission fluid. I was told when it gets to that point its best i get another car. What is your advice. Dont have any mechanics in my area that can do this. I have a 2009 BMW 328i
Of course the dealer wants you to buy another car, just a way of making more money. Go to any Indy German repair shop and you will thank them later for the ATF
Hello everyone ! My mechanic put wrong oil trasmission on my c300 2012 . He put red one 236.14 But the car need 236.15 blue one. I have made 14k km , what should i do . Could i have problem if i change now with blue one or should i keep red one please help
Can anyone update and comment on the long term use of Valvoline Maxlife Multivehicle ATF? Is anyone on their 2nd, 3rd change or more and how many miles? There is a new Valvoline Extended Protection Full Synthetic Multi Vehicle fluid which is claimed to be compatible with 92% all light duty vehicles… I await future vids and thank you
Nathan, would you recommend maxlife multi vehicle in 6hp-19? I ask because I’ve heard on RUclips from others DO NOT use it in 6hp-19. I drained mine 1 year ago an used it. I am planning to do that again an replace the pan/filter. I know I didn’t get all of the original factory fluid out so I have some percent of mixture. I did replace the valve body so I got everything except lines/cooler and converter. I’m planning on using the maxlife again. What’s your recommendation?
I bough that fluid and changed it in my bmw, I'm wearing the shirt that I did it in and 2 years later it still stinks slightly. That stuff is definitely the stinkiest possible
Hello Nathan! I sent you a comment on another of your video's but haven't heard back from you yet. I have a 97 740il (E38) and get some type of grinding noise during acceleration from about 40mph - 60mph. I've had center main bearing replaced but the noise still remains and is getting worse (I'm thinking the only thing left is the transmission, Ugh). Would you please help me with some type of probability that you may have encountered over the years? Thanks, Alphonso!
@@NathansBMWWorkshop Nathan, my mistake. I don't think I was signed in on my first post. However, if I can record the sound that I'm hearing, what would be the best way for me to get that recording to you? As far as the timing chain guides, the engine runs fine; no ticking sounds or nothing like that. But I'm no expect either!
I want to ask your opinion on something. I have an 05 Toyota Sienna. As far as I know, the fluid has been changed at 70k according to Carfax. My usual mechanic says that I should leave it alone. It's at 218k and the fluid is a light brownish color. The fluid isn't black, doesn't smell burnt, and doesn't smell super strong. There are no issues with shifting and I want to keep it that way. Is it a good idea to replace the fluid (drain and fill, not flush)?
Worth doing a change like a pan drop, especially when everything is good and you KNOW it needs it. Absolutely nothing wrong with changing oil at any time. People rather save money than to do a oil change on tranny's but then they wait until the thing starts slipping or shifting hard .
Sigh, I to have a similar situation 😢. 06 lexus es330 188k no clue on last change. Fluid has a deep red, or a smoky red but not cloudy. I can just barely feel the shift apposed to not noticing.
Do you have any experience with Napa filter and trans pan Gasket for 2005 325i transmission , 5HP-19 , i recently did an auto to auto swap and put the Napa filter and gasket on the new transmission everything ran fan and a month later after a pull on the highway , I got a P0710 Transmission Sensor A circuit, code and I am wondering if it’s related to low fluid from leaking of the filter or pan or dirty fluid since it was a used transmission that got put in. Maybe it just needs another flush and fill.
Hi Nathan, wanted to ask your opinion. I have a Manual 05 545i with N62 engine. It has 200,000 miles. Idk if trans fluid has ever even been changed. Would you change it or leave it? Thank you
This video is about automatics. You can change your manual trans fluid anytime. The sooner the better. Your car will never stop working because of a trans fluid change like in an automatic.
I have a 07 auto 328xi with 135 k miles , should I change it ? I have no idea if it was changed before or not but I imagine if it's safe it would be a good idea , what's people's thoughts on this ?
@@darioescobedojr.7914 I did , and it was running a hell of a lot better , it was hard shifting and after I changed the fluid it started to shift a lot better .
Can you help me? Bmw e39 523i M52 loses suddenly power on the highway and the rpm drops down. But after this the engine runs again normally and starts normally until this power loss happens again on the highway. One time after power loss I drove very slow and engine was stall. But after this I could turn the engine on again and no light and no fault codes. What is the problem? Automatic transmission fluid is now changed and this power loss was happened again.
Same thing happened to me. I have a Nissan Sentra 2005. I had a stall where the revolutions almost went down to zero but the engine didn't stop. I quickly went to a gas station and checked for codes since I have my scanner with me. No codes at all. When the problem happened I was on an overpass so there was an inclination. I don't know if it has anything to do with it. I haven't done anything since it hasn't happened again. Did you find out anything? Maybe a loose serpentine?
I am reaching out to my favorite RUclips mechanics to start to test Mobil 1 full synthetic multi vehicle ATF (grey bottle black label) and Amsoil OE Fuel Efficient full synthetic ATF. According to my favorite engineering blogger/engine builder RAT540 who’s now torture tested at least 298 individual engine oils and recently gear and ATF. He ranks that Mobil1 multivehicle full synthetic ATF (gray bottle/black label) as his best performing oil under his unique engineering torture test. Amsoil ATFs also test really well particularly the least expensive “OE Fuel Efficient ATF” if you want thinner viscosity. But he has stated even the marginally thicker Mobil 1 grey bottle black label will work in any light duty automatic transmission. He actually says the Valvoline Maxlife full synthetic ATF seized immediately the same as Mobil blue bottle and Ford Mercon LV iirc. Shocking I know. It might be “probably ok” as long as routine maintenance is done sooner than later, but RAT540 is usually ON THE MONEY…
after very extensive reaserch including input from retired GM ATF Committee member I choose to stay away from anyting that says Dexron VI even if BMW specs are on it - of course for any GM transmission 2006 and older,,,,Dexron III or IIIH is the spec for these 5L40E and ZF, GM which is obsolete and replaced by Dexron VI,,,according to the GM man it is safer to use Dex III /IIIH rather than DexVI due to additives being added from API Group IV in DexVI which are not safe for some seals, bearings, rubbers, connectors etc. etc. etc..( worth mentioning- not safe for little components not the transmission itself) DexIII uses additives from API Group II base oils which at the time ( 20 years back and older) were not synthetics and safe for these little placstic/rubber/ seal components. He also had mentioned that DexIII is obsolete and GM does not license it to anyone, if you see it they are mostly backward compatibile oils like DexVI or ' it is recommended in place of Dex III ',,,on the other hand aftermarket marked D2, D3, D4 - are TRUE respective dexron specs,,,, he says that D2,D3, D3M, D4 etc. are mostly true to their meaning - old dexronII/IIE & dexronIII/IIIH- but they cannot use that OE trade name,,,also if you want to stay on a safe side use TES-295 specs with rigorous attention to most seals , includinf viton seals- not only in a transmission itself but all kind of hoses, connectors, filter, seals, lines and washers etc etc., of that era,,, so check the blue Valvoline that says DEX/Merc - front label says: recommended for dexIII / mercon, 2006 GM and older ; back label lists BMW specs,,, OR blue Valvoline Import Multi Vehicle, why ??? becasue it is compatible with all Japanease/ European/American vehicles of that era, it also has the respective automakers specs recommendations on the back ,,,but DexVI is nowhere to be found on it.....
Yea I had a GM box in a 2000 E46 that was shifting hard from 2nd to 3rd. 178k miles. The fluid was very black and stunk horribly, obviously never changed. 3 drain & fills with some driving in between using the Max life cured it. Now, in my ZF box, I use Pentosin which is very close to original fluid.
I asked the local dealer about changing the transmission fluid and they said it would be $1200 or $1500, I do not remember which. I just remember thinking they had lost their minds. That was for a 2006 650i.

I have a 07 e90 with a GM trans. 130k miles, recently acquired. Car is in great shape but not sure the transmission fluid has ever been changed. Is it too late? I’d like to do a fluid change only but will change the metal pan and filter if necessary.
My mechanic said it’s gonna be $1,300 to change the fluid in my 2017 540i. Is that correct? Thanks
Thank you.
Did you use the maxlife? What happened?
Hello, I have an e46 with a gm transmission. It has 150k and I don’t think the fluid has ever been changed. Would it be ok to do a drain and fill with the Valvoline maxlife? Also can I do a couple fill ups and siphons with this stuff in my power steering that calls for atf? Thanks for the help!
Hey man, you use this in the SMG 3 gearbox (not the hydraulic pump) as well? I'm about to change fluid in my 2007 E63 M6.
Thanks.
Did you ever change the fluid, what happened?
@BJ-fk9sq I ended up just draining all the ATF that would come out by just removing the pan plug. Did not remove the pans. Filled it as recommended. This solved my problem and probably have an additional 8k miles on it. So far so good. I think I will repeat the same thing soon.
@@DigitalPremise-lf5bz what atf did you use? Thank you for the response!
@@BJ-fk9sq Sorry for the delay. Dexron III
Love you Nathan
My E39 540 has never been changed at 130k miles. I was told to leave it be if it’s been too long, is that not true? Should I change it?
Lol for the love of God change your fluid
Please tell me you changed it
Hello everyone !
My mechanic put wrong oil trasmission on my c300 2012 . He put red one 236.14
But the car need 236.15 blue one. I have made 14k km , what should i do . Could i have problem if i change now with blue one or should i keep red one please help
Should I change the fluid of 2012 x3 f25? It has 110k miles, and fluid has never been changed
Sounding like the bossman from the movie men in black

Is this not just described in owners manual?
Can anyone update and comment on the long term use of Valvoline Maxlife Multivehicle ATF? Is anyone on their 2nd, 3rd change or more and how many miles? There is a new Valvoline Extended Protection Full Synthetic Multi Vehicle fluid which is claimed to be compatible with 92% all light duty vehicles… I await future vids and thank you
Any concerns with the trans fluid change in a MB 2009 ML350? I just bought one used and don't remember seeing it done in the carfax history report.
Yes we only us that for ZF boxes and never a issue
Which is better (amsoil signature series atf or valvoline maxlife atf)
I have a 2005 BMW 325i what transmission fluid do I put
I bough that fluid and changed it in my bmw, I'm wearing the shirt that I did it in and 2 years later it still stinks slightly. That stuff is definitely the stinkiest possible
I don’t move my E46 until the temp is above the blue zone

Hello Nathan! I sent you a comment on another of your video's but haven't heard back from you yet. I have a 97 740il (E38) and get some type of grinding noise during acceleration from about 40mph - 60mph. I've had center main bearing replaced but the noise still remains and is getting worse (I'm thinking the only thing left is the transmission, Ugh). Would you please help me with some type of probability that you may have encountered over the years? Thanks, Alphonso!
I thought I answered you back, I would check the timing chain guides but without hearing it it’s hard to say
Should I change my transmission fluid and filter on my e92 at 90k miles? It’s never been changed before.

That's the question that everybody has and when people do change the fluid they never share their experiences on RUclips comments.
No experience with Napa filters, have to lookup the code and see what the causes are
Hey Nathan what fluid will you recommend for transfer case ? E83 114k miles
Did you end up changing it ?
@@darioescobedojr.7914 I did , and it was running a hell of a lot better , it was hard shifting and after I changed the fluid it started to shift a lot better .
Sorry, can only give one thumbs up so 👍 👍
I do a drain and fill every 10,000 miles to my trans.
After I bought my 05 325i I changed the fluid 3 times in 5K miles then Pentosin full sun recommended by bmw
Pentosin is a great OEM alternative
@@skywind007 My problem was the fuel pump's electrical wire was almost cut.
Use the bmw lt-3 transmission fluid. Why go cheap.
Castrol Transmax multi vehicle is my only go to tranny fluid
We did use that but the valvoline is full synthetic and cheaper

I never understood why people don’t change their trans fluid at least every 50k miles. That stupid lifetime fluid crap is such a lie.
Lifetime of the warranty
Generally happens when buying used, or in my case it did. Don't expect a great running vehicle to be properly maintained just cause it seems good.
1997 528i with 220,000 miles and the original oil - still works perfectly.

How can I get my car fix by you ?..plz
For 1million dollars, you can.
after very extensive reaserch including input from retired GM ATF Committee member I choose to stay away from anyting that says Dexron VI even if BMW specs are on it - of course for any GM transmission 2006 and older,,,,Dexron III or IIIH is the spec for these 5L40E and ZF, GM which is obsolete and replaced by Dexron VI,,,according to the GM man it is safer to use Dex III /IIIH rather than DexVI due to additives being added from API Group IV in DexVI which are not safe for some seals, bearings, rubbers, connectors etc. etc. etc..( worth mentioning- not safe for little components not the transmission itself) DexIII uses additives from API Group II base oils which at the time ( 20 years back and older) were not synthetics and safe for these little placstic/rubber/ seal components.
You can still use maxlife in ZF, in fact it works alot better than the amber thin fluid
Hi. Love your vids on BMW E46 etc have been a great help over the years .Have you ever thought about a BMW R53 would love to see your approach .
If you let your trans go past 80k miles, leave it the Fk alone. Or take out one quart a month and replace it super slowly over a few months
I would say no to that, we have changed them at 150k with zero issues, if you let it go it will ruin the trans for sure
I asked the local dealer about changing the transmission fluid and they said it would be $1200 or $1500, I do not remember which. I just remember thinking they had lost their minds. That was for a 2006 650i.
My local shop did it for 580$ total
Bmw e39 528i 1997
its $140 for the filter pan and fluid to do it yourself on a 6hp trans
