Honestly the KEY factor for why LoTR worked so well..was the 3 years of pre production and storyboarding haha. No producers rushing it, no crunch, no scrambling to change a shot two weeks before the end like you see so much nowadays
And why the Hobbit lacked so much polish & has way more jank, production was shambles, Del Toro got axed and they scrambled and threw Jackson back on last minute and so almost everything was thrown together last minute, barely any planning or preproduction

THANK YOU guys!!! I was proud Weta Workshop supervisor on the "Complete circle" Isengard bigiature. We filmed it half-buried in a vacant lot just a few door up the road from the workshop over 6 months in early 2001. Many nights the with wind over 30 knots, we'd have to stop or have harry's MoCon crane wobble, a LOT! ...Soooo... our crew's wind and wet-weather cover was usually indoors across the road filming propane sprite elements of the Balrog!
Little-known fact: Up until 9:11 I was creating dozens of Barad-Dur closeup destruction chunks out of 'black foamed-glass'. These worked great in tests using sequenced shotguns to disintegrate them. The day after 9:11 our producer was like, 'we can't do this scene now'. So it had to wait a while till it was resurrected as a scene.

Wow I know this is an old comment and all, but I just wanted to say that you and the entire LOTR team are responsible for probably the greatest trilogy in movie history. The hard work, no the RIDICULOUS amount of work you guys put into these movies just really really shows. Genius planning and execution, incredible imagination, pure love for the lore, and going above and beyond to create this, it's no question at all. Funnily enough, that's exactly what happened with the movies themselves. Peter Jackson originally pitched LOTR as a two-parter to Miramax (Harvey and Bob Weinstein's company). They started pre-production but the budget soon spiraled and Bob Weinstein demanded that the movie be condensed into a single film. Peter Jackson wasn't happy about cutting out "half the good stuff", so Miramax told him they would look for a new director. They agreed to give Jackson a month to find another studio to take over the project, otherwise, he would be off the movie and it would be released as a single film.
Every studio that met with Jackson turned him down. They all wanted to make a single movie. A few of them agreed to a double feature, but they wanted most of the expensive scenes cut out, which Jackson found unacceptable. Jackson's last meeting was with Bob Shaye (the head of New Line Cinema at the time). He said, "Why would you do two films when there's three books? Why wouldn't you do three films?". Jackson immediately signed a contract with New Line and the rest is history.

Also, the reason the effects in LOTR are so great is that they used cgi to supplement rather than to replace traditional effects. Whenever it was possible to use traditional effects they would, because they seem to have understood the limits of cgi (especially in the early 00s). Now, unfortunately, too many filmakers use cgi as a crutch to be used in 100% of effects shots.

@Joshua Davidson Not only that, but there are problems with the current state of cgi in movies. Problems such as a single production using a ridiculous number of studios doing different things, visual effects staff being overworked and underpaid, and deadlines that prohibit the teams from polishing the finished product. You look at a blockbuster movie like black panther, and wonder how the final battle can look that bad from a studio that prints money. It's just a shame that some higher ups can look at that and go "good enough." That kind of passion for excellence in visual effects is lacking, but luckily we still have people like James Cameron that are pushing the envelope.

6:26 Another Fun Fact: All animals with reflective eyes have this. The real interesting thing is that in reindeer, the reflection changes color depending on the season. In winter, the mirror turns blue so that blue light travels back through the rods and cones. In summer, they change to a golden yellow. This is because during the winter, the fluid in the eye expands, compressing the mirror and changing it to blue. In summer the fluid warms and relieves pressure off of the mirror, making it reflect yellow hues. This is beneficial evolutionarily because during those seasons, those are the most prominent hues of light, allowing them to see better (more sun in summer=yellow, more moon in winter=blue).

I mean, there's also the fact that the Two Towers had a budget of 94 million dollars, which would be the equivalent of around 140 million today. In comparison to the Blackwater episode, which had a budget of 8 million. It's also important to point out that the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed and edited over around 4-5 years. All in all each season of Game of Thrones, excluding the final season, had only a year to complete an entire season, which was often longer than the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy in runtime.
I have many gripes with Game of Thrones, and the final season was an unfortunate disaster, but we should also be fair to the hard working people who tried their best to bring us something amazing - and for the most part they did.

@@Bazoeti then why waste millions of dollars? At the start it was a fantastic show since it followed the books until they reached where they had NO book to use and so had to make it all original. That's the issue GoT has with the finale season or 2 (I forgot if if it was last season or last 2 seasons). Even so, we shouldn't just disrespect the artists, animators, those work on custumes that the show became bad due to the director's and corporate stuff. Like for example, you were hired to be one of the developers of a movie (doing modelling of stuff), how would you feel if they said same thing you said to them, you did not do it cause ya love but for the money. You be pretty heartbroken that people think you don't care but you do.
