I had the honor of attending his master class and a small concert he performed at my community theater. He sang this. It’s his favorite, as well as mine. Rest In Peace, Gavin. ❤
I've watched this video many times over the years and was always impressed with Gavin's talent and touched by his vulnerable take on the song. Rest in peace, sir.
This was one of the first songs I worked on when I first started singing, and all because I loved Gavin’s performance here. Gone far, far too soon. RIP 💔
"Favourite song, ever written" he said. This, in fact, it's a superb song, beautifully written by the great Stephen Sondheim for the film Dick Tracy. Even though, Sooner or Later (by Sondheim too) won the Oscar in 1991, What can you lose, is the true gem in the soundtrack. Madonna, delivered one of her best vocals ever along with Mandy Patinkin, brilliant as usual. Awesome rendition, guys. Hugs from Peru.
Which he chose to ignore. So much pain in such a lovely song. What a gorgeous performance of this song - beautifully colored. Albeit, just a rehearsal. Lovely, simply, lovely.
sooo great. I've listened to this a jillion times. I love the relaxed R&B feel..it makes the piece more vulnerable. This piano arrangement should be published :)
What can you lose? Only the blues Why keep concealing everything you're feeling? Say it to him, what can you lose? Maybe it shows he's had clues, which he chose to ignore Maybe though he knows And just wants to go on as before As a friend, nothing more So he closes the door Well, if he does Those are the dues Once the words are spoken Something may be broken Still, you love him What can you lose? But what if he goes? At least now, you have part of he What if she had to choose? Leave it alone Hold it all in Better a bone Don't even begin With so much to win There's too much to lose
I heard Madonna and Mandy Patinkin and fell in love with it, I did not feel if anyone could do well playing and singing. Please let me tell you both the passion and love behind, thank you!!!
I think this is also my favourite Sondheim song too. Something about this song and it's lyrics hits me deep down. I really like being alive too though so that is a close call
good job! is hard for me to like a song I previously heard from other artist, cause it's a different style, but you are really good at this...so congratulations and thanks for sharing!
I can't believe this is the only version I've ever heard sing it with the pronouns gay! It just makes so much sense with the emotions of it! Why don't more people take that opportunity?
It's a lovely rendition but it works better as a duet. As a solo piece it could work if it was clearly two sides of an internal argument. Don't hate me for having a slightly different opinion!
I know this is just a rehearsal, and just having fun with a beautiful song, but I think the melodic affectations and tempo adjustments of this version take away from the purity of Sondheim's composition. I hear a lot of 'Stevie' influences all over youtube....including this one
Gotta disagree with you on that. The artist's job is to interpret the writer's material. Gavin brought a clear, beautiful, personal version - which I personally love 😎😎😎
Just as Richard Burton would sound disingenuous singing Stevie Wonder, so does giving the 'Retha treatment to this introspective Sondheim gem. Why does everyone think they have to sing everything like Whitney or Mariah? I felt the same level of cringe listening to Michael Bolton trying to inject soul into "Nessun dorma". "Vincero, baby, vincero!"

He's right. This song is the best. And he sings it beautifully. 😭
I've watched this video many times over the years and was always impressed with Gavin's talent and touched by his vulnerable take on the song. Rest in peace, sir.
I've been singing this all day..that's the biggest compliment I can give..."better a bone" ( my favorite lyric in the Friend Zone Anthem).
Rest in peace lovely boy 😢
I've watched this so many times over the years. Such a beautiful song, such a beautiful voice. So sad to hear of his passing.
This was one of the first songs I worked on when I first started singing, and all because I loved Gavin’s performance here. Gone far, far too soon. RIP 💔
Maybe my favorite song ever sung. A voice that will be remembered.
Lovely voice, lovely boy. Fly free, GC.
Thank you, Gavin❤️
You will be greatly missed Gavin! So broken hearted you are gone.

RIP Gavin, you were such a light.

Rip Gavin, I hope someday Madonna listens to this beautiful version. ❤
So lovely. It gave me chills.

This one of my favorite Broadway songs!
Sweet!
Not Broadway. Sondheim wrote this beautiful ballad for film,"Dick Tracy".
Beautiful rendition of this song! Really felt the weight and poetry of the lyrics. Thank you!
What can you lose?
Only the blues
Why keep concealing everything you're feeling?
Say it to him, what can you lose?
Maybe it shows
he's had clues, which he chose to ignore
Maybe though he knows
And just wants to go on as before
As a friend, nothing more
So he closes the door
Well, if he does
Those are the dues
Once the words are spoken
Something may be broken
Still, you love him
What can you lose?
But what if he goes?
At least now, you have part of he
What if she had to choose?
Leave it alone
Hold it all in
Better a bone
Don't even begin
With so much to win
There's too much to lose

This is literally the only Sondheim song that I care about (sue me), and it is because of _Dick Tracy_ and Breathless Mahoney (Madonna).
Thanks much!

👏👏👏😻😻
Beautiful! Please include piano player's hands in next video. Thanks!
I love this version! I keep wondering what makes them both smile when he turns the page? Rude doodle?
Cool Stevie Wonder vibe to a Sondheim song.
Is the Piano sheet music available for this? It's perfect.
I love the Madonna and Mandy Patinkin in Dick Tracy movie varsion
phenominal. " just rehearsing"
@mescelestus And, you know what, the song was great, too. ;-)
I can't believe this is the only version I've ever heard sing it with the pronouns gay! It just makes so much sense with the emotions of it! Why don't more people take that opportunity?

Wait
he kinda looks like aron tveit from Les Miserables?
I know this is just a rehearsal, and just having fun with a beautiful song, but I think the melodic affectations and tempo adjustments of this version take away from the purity of Sondheim's composition. I hear a lot of 'Stevie' influences all over youtube....including this one
And by Stevie, I mean Wonder...

Madonna brought me here.

aucune sensibilité juste du cabotinage à la USA
Not as good Madonna and Mandy
Trying too hard, karaoke never sounded so forced.
