He moved to Devon and we would often see him walking around town. He was so friendly, We both parked next to each other once and as I was getting my 3 month old baby out of the car he asked how old she was, He said his youngest daughter was also 3 months old only a few days a part, he stroked her Chin smiling and said she's beautiful ❤️ love having that memory of him ❤️
For many people this would have been their first view of Rik Mayall as himself. Handsome to the point of being outright pretty, softly but well spoken, a bit shy when out of his comfort zone. What they in their torpor saw as weird, monstrous, confronting and a representation of social decline was really a quite sweet and not at all threatening young man. Those of us who grew up on a steady diet of The Young Ones watched repeatedly on video (Yes, we've got a video!) loved it because it was so funny, violent, gross and silly. But we also loved it because it made our elders feel threatened. We knew something they didn't, which is rare when you're a kid.
First time I've ever seen Rik as himself, and I'm quite taken back. It speaks volumes to how well he gets in to character because there's only brief flashes of his characters during this interview, and that's only when he intentionally does it. He is an incredible person of high intellect and solid grounding and I wish I'd learnt more about him when we had time. I grew up watching the Young Ones as a young one (late 70's kid) along with Hale & Pace and Red Dwarf while living in Australia. Only a handful of my friends enjoyed the same shows and funnily enough we're all still best friends to this day, and we still quote these shows on the regular. There's some good shows that have come and gone since then, but nothing will ever be as great as 80's British TV and I'll always be thankful for you guys making such comedy gold, and for the Australian TV networks for being smart enough to pay the licensing to show it.
That's a fantastic interview, most of the time recently I've only seen Rik playing a bit of a character in interviews; here he seems so natural, it's fascinating.
Ah, great clip. I've been looking for this! The bit about dogs snarling being akin to human laughter has intrigued me since I originally watched this Wogan show.
how can you not love him! hes fantastic! i see comedians like the pythons as amazing and probibly the best comedy and rik and co can stand at their side as equilly amazing!
His face, his adorable attitude, silliness, and JUST HIM........IS MORE THAN we could ask for. He has the luckiest wife in the world. Imagine, making him dinner! or just watching tv with him and knowing, HE'S YOURS....... ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh she's lucky. HE IS BRITAIN'S BEST.
So sad Rik is no longer with us. Very underrated performer , I just howl with laughter when he pulls a face let alone when he says anything . Big loss to comedy
I've never seen Rik outside of his characters until now. He as a lot of the same mannerisms as me. Awkwardly scratching at his face and darting his eyes around, etc. Very attractive man, too. Probably one of my favorite people. He's really great with character body language.
haha funny how he talks about people being disappointed that he isn't more like the characters he plays. I was thinking it was so weird to see him dressed like rick from young ones and yet not acting or talking anything like him. Anyway he seems like a smart, thoughtful guy.
'The Young Ones' definitely was accepted in Aust as are many other terrific British comedies. Australian people understand British humor, ours is similar but not as good! hehe Love Rik.
Oh my God, when Rik says it's probably hard to even say bum on American television and then goes into Rick in like 2 seconds and says BUM. I think my hearts bleeding.
I'm a 32 year old American. When I saw the young ones 20 years ago, I thought it was hilarious. Of course I didn't understand half of it, cuz it was so political (and british), but what I did undersstand, I thought was great. The bands on the show were also cool at the time. If you haven't seen the young ones you should definitely check it out. I own the dvd set.
@Harmalarmo thats a big yes...THOUSANDS of women love him. How could they not! My life would be so boring had I never heard of him. In truth, there are no words existing to describe him properly. Barbara better take care of him forever!
"A joke is an epigram on the death of a feeling" Friedrich Nietszche. You laugh at someone slipping on a banana skin because you are instantly alarmed by the sight of someone violently thrown to the ground with their arms and legs everywhere. In the second or so it takes you to realise that it is just someone slipping on a banana skin that feeling dies; hence the laughter.
Bum means a homeless guy in America. Also, they made a spin-off pilot type thing of "The Young Ones" with American actors (except for Nigel Planer who remained as Neil). Apparently it was dire.
This does show that Rik is very intelligent and knows his comedy history, Some people have called him thick and purile over the years but they are stupid. (Intersting he mentions his parents Prunella Scales once said that she went to school with Riks Mum)

What a lovely encounter. I love RM. DDF and Bottom are so good. You can tell what lovely person he is.
What brilliant, thoughtful, intelligent person. Such a loss.
Oh, he's so young and beautiful and twitchy!!!
Gorgeous, thanks for sharing!
xx
Perfect skin, amazing teeth. He was so photogenic. X

spot on about Australia Rik, we bloody loved it, and really did think you were great, completely brilliant actually! R.I.P.
Aww, I love his little mannerisms. The way he bites his lip is so darn cute!
Rik Mayall is a legend. Pure and simple!
Yeah we loved the young ones in Australia we still do Wik

He seemed so shy there. RIP Rik, you are already missed x
That's a fantastic interview, most of the time recently I've only seen Rik playing a bit of a character in interviews; here he seems so natural, it's fascinating.
Two TV legends gone. R.I.P. xx
Incredible guy, he looks quite young here. We'll miss you Terry!
Ah, great clip. I've been looking for this! The bit about dogs snarling being akin to human laughter has intrigued me since I originally watched this Wogan show.
He is a comedy genius...... thanks for uploading
he is so so so lovely!
Aww love him. Would love to meet him.
Rik - Truly brilliant man.
So incredibly gorgeous and witty. Unreal.
What a lovely guy. Had a massive crush on him even years later on Johnathan Creek
I know right!!! He is so adorable!!!! Love that punk rock bad boy look here!
Ah, I love Rik Mayall so much! I love to see him in interviews, it's fun to see him as himself. Much less high-energy.
Yay! Rik Mayall! What a cool person. ^^ The Young Ones is and was an amazing TV show. I love it. :D Terry Wogan should have been nicer though.
i'd never get tired of rik and Ade love em both! ^_^
Thanks you so much for this! =D
Aww.. he was so adorable :D
aww he's lovely !! I'd love to meet him!!
Thanks very much. I've never seen him in a pre-New Statesman/Bottom interview.
Great Interview! Love Rik!
Ian Botham and Raquel Welch (in the routine) were mentioned as they were the other guests on the show.
I accidentally taped over the start! (Rik did some stand-up before the interview - hence the attire)
i actually met rik mayall when the bottom tour came to manchester along with ade edmondson they are both fantastic comedy actors of the decade
love and will miss rik forever. credit to terry too - a great job being the older slightly befuddled man but still respectful of rik as a comedian.
how can you not love him! hes fantastic! i see comedians like the pythons as amazing and probibly the best comedy and rik and co can stand at their side as equilly amazing!
A decent, sincere and funny bloke, the biggest loss in British comedy since Ronnie Barker
Rest in Peace Rik!
he's gorgeous and so talented!
He seems quite shy!
yup. trawling through all the old Rik videos at 3am.
So sad Rik is no longer with us. Very underrated performer , I just howl with laughter when he pulls a face let alone when he says anything . Big loss to comedy
I think its cue how nervous he seemed at such a young age..and through his years, he's still a bit quiet yet brilliant.
Rik at the height of his powers. It was a pleasure to see this.
I've never seen Rik outside of his characters until now. He as a lot of the same mannerisms as me. Awkwardly scratching at his face and darting his eyes around, etc. Very attractive man, too. Probably one of my favorite people. He's really great with character body language.
It's never too late for them to revisit that thought coming to fruition.
a genuis, Rik
I love him :D
i could listen to him all day lol
It's amusing how Rik avoids Terry's eye and it seems to annoy him. I'm proud to share my name with him. :D
HES SOO CUTE SOOOOOO FUNNY I LOVE HIM
Great to see a young Rik, with all the embryonic mannerisms that we have come to love over the years. Funny how unsure he is of himself here too.
haha funny how he talks about people being disappointed that he isn't more like the characters he plays. I was thinking it was so weird to see him dressed like rick from young ones and yet not acting or talking anything like him. Anyway he seems like a smart, thoughtful guy.
He mentioned the third series of The Young Ones!
Shame it was never filmed/aired..
love it how he calls them the young uns
Rip rik. U made me and my sister laugh so much when we were younger (bottom bbc)
mdm3boi *my sister and I
@AceripXF He's dressed as Rick from TYO. He had little ponytails all through the show (except the pilot).
Oooooh Rik I love you so!
Yeah, something like that. It was a few years after the show was over.
I love that kinda droopy eyed look he does, he's gorgeous, wish he was still as young as this now, lol, we love the rik mayall!!!
That was so great! He was nervous, cute.
The Young One's Bachelor book was considered the "third season" as it was all new material. At least that's what Rik refers to it as.
they wrote a third series but it never got shown on tv.
Love him !! x.
Lol, the way he looks when he shouts BUM!
So nervous but pleasantly intellectual.
'The Young Ones' definitely was accepted in Aust as are many other terrific British comedies. Australian people understand British humor, ours is similar but not as good! hehe
Love Rik.
Oh wow, how adorable? I love this man. Funniest person ever born.
Oh i love him! great eyebrow raise! ;)
Hes just beautiful
I'll get tired of Rik the day after I die.
ILOVE THIS MAN
I'm not usually one of 'those' commenters, but, you know, one has to admit there was quite a bit of Rik-adorableness going on here.
Oh my God, when Rik says it's probably hard to even say bum on American television and then goes into Rick in like 2 seconds and says BUM. I think my hearts bleeding.

No one says ‘crap!’ Like Rik mayell!
Aw,he seemed kind of nervous here. So young!
@Harmalarmo thats a big yes...THOUSANDS of women love him. How could they not! My life would be so boring had I never heard of him. In truth, there are no words existing to describe him properly. Barbara better take care of him forever!
wow two legends no longer here
yes it does do well in the aus
Ok, now I REALLY know how being in love feels. ♥
It's a sort of ancient Irish mythological creature. According to legend, it can be heard in the mornings.
The People's Poet, forever missed.
Such a loss.....great fun

terry wogan is such madness
So adorable XD
I'd kill to see a bootleg of him doing Comedy of Errors. I hate when awesome people mention off-hand things they'd done live; I can't see it!
Rik Mayall is an effing genius!
This does show that Rik is very intelligent and knows his comedy history, Some people have called him thick and purile over the years but they are stupid.
(Intersting he mentions his parents Prunella Scales once said that she went to school with Riks Mum)
i like how u used his stage name haha
cool interview. has anyone got the letterman interview?
this is fascinating. If i met him back then I would have been so desperately in love
In interviews like this he has always looked uncomfortable or fidgety
Heh, if you're referring to the bit I think you are, he says 'surrealistic', not 'so realistic'.
I think Rick out of the Young Ones was probably like this really - and had to act up to Viv, Neil and Mike lol
omg Rik is like so adorable with all that spikey hair LOL i just dont get the 2 little pony tails O_o
HE'S SO CUTE
great little rant about banana peels and bearing teeth
"we're not the kind of people to fall over on banana skins"
the guy's a genius.
Question: Rik Mayall or Terry Wogan for dinner?
