Karl Richter is the one who has awakened my interest in Bach's music. And I'll always be thankful to him for introducing me into this world :) Donath and Hamari do a wonderful job. Their voices blend very well!
I watch all the new productions that get posted on RUclips, and none of them seem to match the excellence exuded here. The tempo, the careful attention to diction, and enunciation are so perfect in this interpretation. I have been listening since 2013 and it's still as excellent as the first time I heard it.
Fantastique.
Dont know if anyone gives a shit but if you are stoned like me atm you can watch all the new movies and series on instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my brother lately :)
There are many variations of the german performance of Bach. Karl Richter was a wonderful organist and conductor of Bach's works in the traditions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Unfortunately, when the early music movement came along, Richter's work fell out of favor, and it is said he died a broken man. It is a shame. He was a marvelous musician. In my listening of Bach, and I have lstened to a lot of Bach and sung a lot of Bach, I believe there is room for more than one interpretation and style. To subscribe to only one ignores the practices of others that speak of other times and are ingrained in our culture. Being American does put me at some disadvantage, but I have been lucky to work with some fine Bach musicians. This wonderful duet from the "St. Matthew" is beautifully played and sung. I would walk to the ends of the earth to hear Julia Hamari sing. If you can hear Julia Hamari sing the Agnus Dei from Bach's B-minor mass, you will not be disappointed. It is on Rilling's first recording of the B-minor Mass around 1975. Apologies for the hyperboli. Fran Stone Lee, Mass.
There is no conflict. Bach was in oblivion untill Mendellsohn redescover and obviously re-wrote it to his time taste and feeling. There is no "practise of that Day". We must pay tribute and go away from préciosité
One can imagine the day of the rehearsal in the humble church of Bach, those listeners, a bunch of old peers and old ladies in amazement listening to not a boring traditional used-to-be piece of music for the cult but a dramatic opera ... in the church... this Bach must be crazy!!
This is extraordinary. All the debate about 'authenticity' and HIP pales into insignificance when confronted with a performance of this overpowering emotional intensity.
For your information I go every year to the Matteaus Passion in Naarden Holland, mostly it's a counter tenor like Daniels who performs I really do love it, the antique instruments and the voice from that time in that church makes that experience totally complete.
@@truesoundchris When it comes to vocal technique, you have no clue. Both are fabulous oratorio singers, open, relaxed, flexible, never running out of breath.
Impressive, the art in its essence! Awesome Karl Richter performances.
Quintaesencia pura.
My Jesus now is captured. Leave him, stop, do not bind! Moon and light have sunk through pain because my Jesus is captured. Leave him, stop, do not bind! Leave him, stop, do not bind! They lead him away, he is bound.
Well, to my mind Richter's dramatisation of Bach is a thoroughly worthwhile contribution to the Bach landscape. Yes, I'm sure that Bach academics will find much to criticise, but Richter has contributed a lot to my appreciation of Bach and for that I will be always thankful.
Truly remarkable. Chris Hinze does this great on his album "Sketches on Bach". "Have lightning and thunders their fury forgotten! Have lightning and thunders their fury forgotten! Have lightning and thunders their fury forgotten! Then open O bottomless pit all thy terrors! Destroy him! Overwhelm him! With tumbult of rage! The treacherous betrayer! The murderous blood! The treacherous betrayer! The murderous blood!"

Here is other version, that I like more: Behold, my Jesus now is taken, Leave him, halt, bind him not! Moon and stars have for grief hidden their faces, Since my Jesus now is taken. Leave him, halt, bind him not! They lead him away, he is bound
well, that a matter of opinion and your are entitled to have yours different than mine, the visual one I mean with looking at a man and you hear a total different voice that you would expect, that also is important and plays a big roll in the whole acceptance. Boulez ,Stockhausen and Stravinsky are a revelation but this music sounds like it comes from some place timeless in the psyche yet it is as old fashioned strict counterpoint . REVELATION whenever I listen to a number from the passions. There isnothing like this music !

Richter's recordings are dramatic and beautiful, but if you want to hear Bach performed in a more "authentic" manner (the way it was likely performed in Bach's time) Harnoncourt or Rifkin is a better choice.
This is beautiful but dayum . . . that mezzo soprano just never heard of being quiet, did she? The soprano voice never has a chance to flourish and she has way more dynamics than the mezzo. What shocks me too is the soprano's facial expressions. I've never seen someone sing with such a closed mouth before. O_O Beautiful song though and I love the choir.
Why is there are glitch in the stunning pause moment, as they sing "Have lightning and thunders their fury forgotten" PAUSE "then open o bottomless pit all thy terrors....." ??? spoils it. That pause is so subtle. I think it might have influenced the Beethovens 9th Symphony pause
What excessive vibrato? You apparently do not like normal voices. Some vibrato is natural, it is built in to the nerves and the muscles, and you can suppress it only by forcing the voice.
I have had quite enough of these so called authentic performances with 'original'instruments and dull performances a la Harnoncourt et all: I want to hear musical performances to I find pleasing, not theoretical correct lectures

@Angel Parker definitely, been using Instaflixxer for since november myself :D
Because they wanted to make it like some movie.
Absolutamente impressionante. Estonteante. Essa é a perfeição rigorosa de Bach. Arte. Não há dúvida.
Bach requires clarity and precision of the very highest order.
Never in all my years have i seen or heard a better interpretation.
I heard a great flute interpretation once by Chris Hinze
Looks like the singers are staring and talking to Jesus directly.

I love the organ at "eröffne den feurigen abgrund" ,simply beautiful :)
Absolutety awesome. Stunning and bewitching. This is the rigorous perfection of Bach. Art. There is no doubt.
Karl Richter just has to up there with the great interpreters of Bach's music, whether conducting or playing the organ - the guy was just superb.

I know of no alto that achieved what Julia Hamari achieved singing Bach. To my knowledge she is top of the heap.

An old 80s video recording of Herreweghe's Matheus passions with Knabenchor is great one too. I think it equals Richter's.
Well, it may not be period-authentic, but it is sure one uplifting performance!

¿What does elder Emmanuel Macron conducting this aria?
@rosinlr - agree. Richter's stoicism is equally absurd. Given the material he was dealing with, he had to have worked really hard at that....
Bach and his galaxy...
does not sound like the sixties the music is really beautiful

I feel like it needs to be quieter. The oboes are really loud and blaring. The voices are pretty good though.
Take it to the seventees. It's from 1971 :-)
Thank you for the correction.
This duet is somehow the monument to femininity.
Richter certainly has his own agenda as in his 2LP DGG set of the Goldberg Variations
seemingly calculated to induce fever dreams.
The music is timeless but Richter has them goose stepping!
I could hardly hear the music for the excessive vibrato!
What excessive vibrato? You apparently do not like normal voices. Some vibrato is natural, it is built in to the nerves and the muscles, and you can suppress it only by forcing the voice.

Think the duet is too slow and draggy. Not sure if it's on purpose to show the sudden momentum pick up by the chorus.
