Working on the SR-71's was a blast.
All the way up until the end of the program we were secretly modifying them the make them go faster, even faster than any recorded event and safer too. We kept the doors and gates to our Metals Technology shop locked and secure. We used tarps to cover up the inlets parts from prying eyes. Not even our commanders knew that magic tricks we were performing on these titanium beast. Not long after a few very fast test runs, the ADP engineers had big smiles for the results. We must have made them too fast because the USSR collapse and the AF canceled the SR-71 program. Soon after the Gulf War General Schwarzkopf and Congressman John Glenn said they would have been an asset and it was a mistake to deactivate them. We gave them no speed limit. All the Drivers had to do was watch the compressor inlet temperatures and keep the temps below 425 degrees. Any temps higher than that and the parts start to grow beyond limits. The Seals on the inlets and pressures in the hydro systems get a bit wonky. With the right atmospheric conditions, one good only guess how fast it could go.
That is so awesome!! Thank you for sharing, my goal is to be one of those ADP engineers! What a congressional failure when you have the Supreme Allied Commander of the Gulf war say it was a mistake to retire them!
