Sensei Maloney’s seminars are always outstanding. He always does such a tremendous job combining the theory and practical nature of techniques with so much real world pressure testing experience through all of his life’s experiences. We are so fortunate, as Karate-ka, to learn from such an accomplished martial artist.

The sit when you hit stuff, rolling the shoulders forward, thinking about blocks as offensive traps etc, is the exact same as Pak Mei and other hakka styles of Kung Fu. This style of karate has a very Kung Fu flavour and there is clearly a common root with the hakka styles

Thank you for the informative comment. I have not looked into those styles, but I will have to do some research now. Uechi-ryu still holds on to a lot of its Chinese origins so I am not surprised to hear the similarities.

@@leithkarate I've seen similarities before with karate styles, but Uechi Ryu seems virtually identical. The main styles are Pak Mei, southern dragon and southern praying mantis. White crane might be hakka as well, but if it's not it shares similar principles and body mechanics. The monkey steals peach RUclips channel did a interesting recent series on Hakka styles of Hong kong

Does Uechi have shuto strikes performed with the palm facing down? Like the edge of hand blow from Defendu? I haven't spotted it in any kata. But I kinda remember seeing a video of Kiyohide Shinjo hitting a makiwara with it.

Yes. Not directly in a kata, but the end of the wa-uke could be interpreted that way from a different angle.

Very true! Maybe next time he is in town I will see if he would like to talk about it.
