My personal theory after thinking about this for a long-ish while. I don't know any more than anyone else but I will even suggest ways to add weight to this at the end.
Maura fell in with a group of people that were doing something seriously illicit. She knew something abot them they saw as a threat. Likely she did not even realize she knew this. They suggested a party. So she looked up the cabin and printed out the maps - likely sharing those maps with the others to attend.
She headed out (Buying the alcohol becuase this is a college student going to a party - nothing strange in that). She had a person using the same maps behind her. She headed to what she thought was a party.
Meanwhile people remaining behind packed her things up and sent and email from her account saying she'd be gone for a bit. Doing this would allow several days to pass before anyone asked where she was.
The plan would be to make her disappear at the destination and with the days between that and the beginning of the search they assumed they could transport her body far enough away.
But she had an accident. She was seen by a few people but denied help - since she had, what she thought was a friend behind her no more than 10-15 minutes away. They'd be passing by quickly. And they did,
She got into that car and they drove off. She likely met a fate then since she did not retrieve the party supplies. But whether she met her fate then or later, she was likely killed by this person and transported quite far away to be disappeared.
Possible ways to add weight to this theory:
    1. Were there any serious crimes perpetrated by other students or personnel at the university?
    2. Was she ever seen with people that her other friends perhaps did no know?
    3. Is there any evidence of serious illegal activity that went on at the university whie she was there (Or within a year after she disappeared)?
A "yes" to any of those adds some weight to this theory.
