    Everything you said about the Hutson contract and how he got ripped off completely explains why the Laffs haven’t won a cup in my 55 years on planet earth.
    If everyone goes for their max deal you end up with a team that is very unbalanced and one where the players are out for themselves and not the team. This should sound familiar to anyone who watches the laffs

    Born a Habs fan in Montreal - moved to the GTA 24 years ago and honestly, I love it here more than anywhere in the world.
    But let me tell you… after a decade of surviving non-stop sermons about Matthews, Marner, and Nylander, I’m thoroughly enjoying watching Leafs Nation slowly realize that it’s never going to happen for them - and that the way the Habs are building it is most likely going to work.
    The Habs are coming - and they’re coming strong. 😎
    And one last thing - I genuinely love SDPN. Even though you’re Leafs-heavy (understandably), your takes on other teams are most of the time right on point, and that’s why I keep watching

    • @thekiatty6953
      @thekiatty6953 5 months ago +2

      To be faaaair (help me out LK fans), the Habs were such a non-destination for long term signings and free agents, Hughes and gorton HAD to address that (and they seem to have done it very well)

    • @ChrisArsenault-um1gt
      @ChrisArsenault-um1gt 5 months ago +1

      @thekiatty6953 I think that is fair. Marc Bergevin had a "my way or the highway" approach to negotiating. And while Jacques Martin, Michel Therrien, etc. are good hockey people/coaches, they are not the types who high octane offensive players want to play for. St. Louis is a more new-school coach and demands respect.

    I know it's hard to understand for leafs fans, but some hockey players have passion and don't treat this like a 9-5. You can compare this to Marchand, even. Guy wants to win. That's why he has a 5.5ish AAV and scores exactly when he needs to. It ain't for the off-season palm trees.

    Just a note on the 27 mil in cap space, thats only including 15 of the 23 possible roster spots. They still need to sign Bolduc, Matheson (or his replacement), Dach (or his replacement), Xhekaj, and Veleno (or his replacement).
    By the end they should have roughly 12-15 mil at least, unless they make a big splash in the Dach replacement

    • @samuel_338
      @samuel_338 5 months ago

      Looking at the current players, if they don't resign Dach, Laine and Veleno, they have around 18 mil cap space, but I would say that Anderson might be traded for draft picks purely to give Hughes even more room, that's 24.2 mil to sign Bolduc around 6-7, Hutson (signed already), Matheson (around 5.5) and Xhekaj (around 3) so that leaves 8-9 mil for 2nd C, Florian Xhekaj and Owen Beck can play 4th line with Evans and year after that, Demidov + Kapanen + Dobeš

    • @slipperynodd578
      @slipperynodd578 4 months ago +1

      I don’t understand where how you got your number, everyone under contract make a total of ~76.118 mil, with the next years cap of 104, that leaves ~27.881 mil of cap space to sign Bolduc (7 mil), Matheson (5.5 mil 🤷‍♂️), Xhekaj (2 mil), and an entry level. That leaves roughly 12.5 mil for a 2C, obviously it wouldn’t cost that much, but they have the space if needed.
      Demidov’s extension will be covered by Gallagher and Anderson leaving

  • @bibichillieblue

    This is so interesting because both teams have legendary status (although Montreal has it a bit more) and both weren’t doing so well for some time. Habs came close to the cup in 2021, but I guess that doesn’t really count (although I definitely felt so patriotic when they won on June 24th it was craaaazy). Both teams made mistakes but for a while Ithought Toronto was going to win before the Canadiens. They also had a very young team that was full of potential. And honestly I kind of hope for them too to get the cup again someday but like, also not really obviously😂. I don’t know what the future holds for the habs, but if they do win, I hope the leafs get to learn from this! Sometimes you just can’t help it if a team is just too legendary like that! Would be soooo badass if the habs broke the canadian stanley cup drought after they were the last one to have it.

    You're not taking into account the Bonus Money, he takes home more money than he would at an salary of $10 million dollars per season.

    Toronto fans don’t understand star players taking discounts so their teams can be competitive for years & years. Who would’ve thought.

    Habs fan but I was with the Leafs on Nylander. I really thought they would trade Nylander for a top D they needed, or let him sit. I was shocked at his contract and thought they were screwing themselves, and so did many others.
    Bergevin wasted a good Habs team but Dubas, that Leafs team should have been in a couple finals. Dangle is right.

    For Dobson, Habs are buying lots of UFA years.
    For Hutson, not many UFA years bought.

    I hear what you're saying about Dubas and the Penguins. Definitely something to watch out in the future, but he probably is perfect gm for the Penguins current situation. It will take years before they have a kid worth paying 10 million for.

    Steve . It’s simple ……Ufa years are worth more the Rfa years . Should he sign for 4 years to make more money ….. oh wait that’s what the leafs do. Hutson would prefer Stanley cups over an extra 8 million…. It’s called character

    Everyone is compromising on the salaries a bit in a group effort to win the cup. You saw it when all the players grouped around Hutson at practice to welcome nim in the gang. These guys are on a long term mission. Let's not forget that every hockey player dreams of having his name engraved on the Stanley Cup. No money can buy this.

    Agreed. It is sad to see what happened to the Leafs. Bringing a competitive team year in without breaking the ceiling of the 1st round for most of the time. As a habs fans, I am glad they learned the lesson from the Leafs.

    Any financial advisor can turn the 11 million signing bonus into 20 million before the 8 year contract ends. Hutson wins and the Habs win.

  • @Jay7576

    I thought the Tavares get was ill timed. His contract restricted the Leafs from going out and building a strong D corps and a solid goalie. They didn't need Tavares, they needed to spend their cap on keeping the puck out of their net. It wasn't a secret that MTL was interested in JT, so I believe the Leafs signed him because they didn't want him going to MTL.
    Just bad cap management on the Leafs end. Really hard to build a winner when more than half of your cap is eaten by 4 forwards.
