- In the long and illustrious history of The Greenbrier 1948 was a pivotal year. This newsreel documents the reemergence of what was even then one of America's most historic resorts after its use as a World War II Army hospital. Stunningly redecorated by the famed New York interior decorator Dorothy Draper, the hotel reopened to a grand party that April which was the topic of conversation in high society circles for years to come. With this party The Greenbrier was back in the center of American social life and this film captures a special moment in the resort's legendary narrative.
My late father, Captain Jim Donegan, recovered from his war wounds at The Greenbriar in 1942. Later in 1948, he and my mother, Dorothy Donegan, spent part of their honeymoon at the resort. I hope to visit this grand hotel someday soon!
Best place in WV - my first exposure to the work of Dorothy Draper. Celebrated my Mom's 90th birthday there with sisters and brothers.
We love it there! We just returned from our three night stay. We celebrated my husband’s 60th birthday ❤
Lucky man!
I spent 9 days there in the late 90s. Incredible. To Bob Conte, historian, thank you for all.
Fondest memory of flying in on his private airplane and us enjoying the Greenbrier- the fabulous restaurants, gambling (we won too 😊) and the wonderful shopping with my Mr. McKinney.
This is awesome! Thank you!
I have loved this wonderful resort for a long time. I am eagerly looking forward to my next visit.
What a wonderful time it was. Let's go back in time ! ✌️
A man who used to walk his dog (Andy) around my neighborhood back in the 1980's told me he was going to the Greenbrier for the weekend. The next week when I saw him I asked, "How was the Greenbrier and he said Andy liked it so much that they would be going back".
I’m in southwestern Pennsylvania, right next door to West Virginia. I’m surprised I never heard of this place.
Wow, thanks. Great video. First time seeing the Duke and Duchess dancing to a waltz! Wonder whose guests they were, since they never paid their own hotel bills.
😂🎉🎉🎉
I always felt they lived a very sad life, her, more so than him.
We spent Christmas/New Years Holidays here as a child. Wonderful! Thanks!
Do you remember the prices
@@PhillyDomSideDude at check out my dad paid $1000. at the desk. Ca.1965. I am sure there were additional costs plus taking the C&O from Toledo.
Not a single smart phone in sight, everyone living the dream.
My family’s experience was outstanding. First with our two sons in 1988 and again with our son Hunter and his family during a Thanksgiving Holiday. The Christmas Decorations, Suites and Service outstanding. A magical weekend in many ways… Auburn beat Alabama!!! War Eagle🦅🦅🦅

DENVER AIRPORT HOLDS THE NEW ONE
Beautiful... only video where Thelma Chrysler appears
Little did the storied guests know that just a dozen years later this famed hotel would house a secret underground bunker intended to house the U.S. government in the event of a nuclear war!
Just the congress. There were numerous other "bunkers" to house various other parts of the government.
Same thing with supfer springs Arkansas. I live in an underground mine by the railroad. With a massive undocumented quarry.

Please share pictures of your underground mine home!!
A lot of us already knew about the bunker even before it was announced.
@@SherryHill-k5y Kind of hard to keep something like that secret, especially in a place where everybody knows everybody else's business.
i think im moving to west virginia
