No it probably cost them 5 dollars. When he shot that thing I could see that it was clad it isn't solid silver. I would never pay 60 bucks for that thing. I'll explain, when that bullet hit it the impact blew away the silver revealing an inner core.

The octagon barrel was actually cheaper back then because it was less machine work as the barrel blanks were square so they just cut the corners off to make 8 sides where as a round barrel had to be lathed down much more labor and costs.

Winchester would have never had square barrel blanks. They would have always been in the form of an octagon. They would have never turned a square barrel blank on a lathe because it's much more time consuming, and there is more waste using square stock. Barrel blanks would leave the foundry as octagons.
