- Garry Adelman of the American Battlefield Trust sits down with famed author of Civil War novels "Gods and Generals" and "The Last Full Measure," Jeff Shaara, for an exclusive Q & A. Shaara also discusses his upcoming book "To Wake the Giant: A Novel of Pearl Harbor."
This was absolutely wonderful! You mentioned at the end the possibility of a second (and even third) interview, and I really support that idea. Well done!
Jeff Shaara is one of my favorite authors. If he ever writes a book about Vietnam, I hope it includes Patton's son, General George S. Patton IV, as one of the main characters.
I have deeply enjoyed all of his novels. As an Iraq veteran, I am anxious for his treatment of that conflict.
A friend of mine put me on to Jeff's books. I believe I have read all of them. Just got thru Awaken the Giant. Cannot wait until the book on Midway comes out.
Shiloh has become my favorite Civil War battle field after the visited it.
Great interview Gary. All though you were laid back for a change, that didn't make this interview any less compelling. I echo the sentiment of Mr. Shaara writing about Iraq and Afghanistan. I'd love to see another interview with this prolific writer. He is an American treasure. BTW...I'm from Jersey City too. I was a police officer there for 25 years. You can write a book about that city for sure. Known as the 6th borough on the West Bank of the Hudson River directly across from the World Trade Center. I was there for 911.
Gods and Generals was a fantastic movie. It’s to bad we haven’t had a good civil war movie since then. I would love to see a movie about the life of Robert E Lee. It’s so eventful that a film would be exciting from start to finish
When Jeff speaks about his father, I am reminded of the relationship of Washington Roebling to his father John in the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge (re; 'The Great Bridge', by David McCullough in 1972).
The greatest works of human endeavor are always multi-generational ('Pillars of the Earth', Ken Follett - etc.).
What a nice interview! Can't get enough of this stuff. Love the channel!
We have ridden bicycles to explore both Gettysburg and Vicksburg. I couldn’t figure out a way to get to Shiloh when we were last there. I need to return to spend some serious time at that battlefield. Thanks for the preservation of the sites and to Jeff Schaara for his ability to raise consciousness about the battles. Thanks to each of you for this episode.
my favorite book of all time is indeed gods and generals by jeff shaara and darkness at Chancellorsville by ralph petes and stonewall goes west and mother earth bloody ground by r e thomas
Love Jeff shaara a lot so much that I got to meet him and get a picture with him and got the book gods and generals signed by him
Great writer, you can really get sucked into the books no how many pages they are
I so wish they would make a movie about Clara Barton and the Civil War.
I read Killer Angels, then God's and Generals before starting Shelby Foote's Trilogy. Enjoyed God's and Generals.
Ur guys are the greatest
I think Franklin should have been among the battlefields in his "Discovering America's Hallowed Ground" book
Long time fan. Wonderful to see this interview! Thank you so much!
Excellent interview
Frozen hours should be a movie
I am struggling today to rationalize current events in the context of American History.
'The Glorious Cause', (second in a series of NOVELs) addressing the genesis of the American War for Independence is the closest I can grasp for such rationale.
What says Mr. Shaara? What is the most effective way forward for the United States?
Our modern-day events reminiscent of the Boston-Massacre, Lexington / Concord, and Breed's Hill having already occurred(?)
IMHO, our Nation's principle impetus toward LIBERTY will constantly collide with our imperative for UNION.
UNION must remain the imperative as determined by previous 'trials-by-combat'.
Where is the third movie?
First!
Gods and Generals is a terrible terrible book. Shaara's faither was able to write, but he can't. Poorly researched and argued too. Avoid
