LIVING THE GOOD LIFE is a much-loved film about a remarkable couple.
During the Great Depression, Helen and Scott Nearing quit city life and moved to Vermont. He was a brilliant economist; she, a concert violinist. Together, they made their Forest Farm homestead synonymous with the ideals of simple and sustainable living. In the noble tradition of Thoreau, Scott was an influential figure in American life for nearly 70 years. He died in 1983, shortly after his 100th birthday. Helen lived into her 90’s.
Filmed in 1976, when Helen and Scott were 74 and 93 respectively, Living the Good Life captures daily life at Forest Farm as the Nearings grow their own food, cut firewood for fuel, and put the finishing touches on a large stone home built by hand.
Through their books and public appearances they denounced all forms of exploitation, but the source of inspiration for young and old alike remains the example of their day-to-day living.
