This is based on Alexander Dumar The Count of Monte Cristo which HKTVB specifically mentioned when the series was aired for the first time in the mid 1970's.

Excellent adaptation from The Count of Monte Cristo.
i think that era 1976 my home still no video tape player yet probably in 1978 i beginning watch laitik as we know today asia television company
What great cinema should be.
But wow...67 episodes, close to 67 hours instead of a few hours. Can have a detailed plot, character development, prequel and sequel in one so there cannot be gaps or illogic in storyline.
Not fast moving though. But if you have time and patience, it is very worthwhile. And on RUclips there is no rush to complete watching the entire series in a limited time.
8:00 the old man appears a little greedy (of course not - for he is very humble and generous for he was concerned about her cousin disapproving of the gifted food), but actually he is so very impressed, and of course happy with the abundance of the food that the kind lady was offering to him, purchased with money that she, not her male cousin (in those times, work/job was not plentiful especially for women), earned working for the fishing boat.
Popular storyline for those days - struggling to make ends meet.
The actress playing the kind lady is popular Hong Kong anchorperson/current event show host Wong Suk Yee. This is her early debut as actress. She is still acting in series/shows these days for TVB.
This I think also depicts the rise of big business in tiny Hong Kong.
And then there's also tax evasion - on the cigarettes. 🤣 . A luxury.
