Touareg all the way, a lot more reliable than the BMW.
Unfortunately BMW have lost their way with their latest designs, as well as reliability and repair costs.
Touareg/Cayenne, yes it shares more of this multi VW shared platform than the other VW brands,
As a Kiwi living in Canada, my Wife and I have a 14 Cayenne Diesel which was hard to find due to the US bulls... emission scandal. I first tried buying a Touareg in 2016 but VW North America pulled the sales of VW branded TDi products. I personally like the Touareg style over my Cayenne, but wanted a diesel so a Porsche it was.
    Great Channel.

Do you find the VW more reliable than the BMW? Ive owned a couple VW’s (from new) and both of them, once they reached 3yrs old/out of warranty, i had nothing but problems with both of them but the BMW’s I’ve owned (also from new) have been absolutely trouble free. How has your Porsche been reliability wise?

@@joshuaoverton3309 Our Cayenne Diesel has been amazing, but I did a Malone Tune and delete, what a Beast now.
There’s a lot of German Diesel owners with VAG brands in Nth America, holding off until their Diesel Gate warranties finish.
Personally I care less about that Carrot being dangled in front of me, I want our Cayenne to operate like it was designed.
I should mention again, I do live in Western Canada so going the tuning way is a little easier.
It’s a real shame VW Nth America decided to stop bringing the next generation Touareg’s, instead people are stuck with that Crapy Atlas too buy.
As far as I’m concerned it’s only a Volkswagen by name, certainly not by pedigree.

Yankee Doodle: and an excellent choice on your part that was Sir! The Touareg might be the most underrated SUV on the planet. It handles, rides and performs as well as OR BETTER than anything. You’d think that after three generations, the world would have figured out just how good the Touareg is. Had Dieselgate not happened, things might be different. As it is, the Touareg is no loner available here in the States, in fact there are no diesels at all from VW here on offer other than pre-owned vehicles. Being no fan of the smaller Tiguan and very sadly disappointed by the larger Atlas, I’m content for now with a five year old Touareg, but come time to replace it, I have no idea what I’ll do. I’ve looked at the Audi which supposedly rides on the same chassis but walked away relatively disinterested. As for BMW, I have no interest in getting to know my service technician quite that well.

Yankee Doodle: I think the Genesis would be worth considering. I test drove both of its cousins (the Hyundai Pallisade and Kia Telluride) last week because both have been getting favorable press. I preferred the Pallisade and thought it was pretty nice. And the warranty is very compelling icing on the cake too.

I have always loved the X5, but the X5 doesn’t like my pocket. The package that the VW offers, in my estimation, gives it the edge and especially at that price point. In Jamaica, we only get Petrol, and the engine is the same as the base Cayenne, Macan S, base Q7 and base Q8 (TFSI 3.0 Vs Turbo). With that motor, I am sold on the Touareg. The only thing now is to sort out the options 😆

I'm lucky enough to actually own both Bimmer is our family mover and VW company car. I'd pick the fully loaded top of the range VW over the entry Bimmer but pick the Bimmer over the VW from 30d and above. I have the M50d and the performance and comfort level is better than the VW and it can be optioned to the colour of the dash leather trim. Also Bimmer has 7-seat option. The Bimmer, even the M50d is pretty good on fuel. One tank can go from Sydney to Melbourne non-stop and still have 1/4 left. Overall, both cars are great.

Touareg is almost perfect but there should have been an option for 7 seats considering it’s 100k plus.
They both are equally good looking but like you said VW wins with interior tech too. It’s really hard to choose among the two.
But we could also argue that if you’re paying 20k more for the X5, you are better off with a Q7.
Just to add that unfortunately I don’t think we are going to get the best of Touareg that is R with a V8 or recently unveiled Plug-in hybrid. But we do have the Plug-in hybrid X5 here already offering upto 80kms on electric only.

  • @leem5894

When you're spending that amount of cash badge matters and factoring in the amount you have to pay extra for the bigger screen in the Touareg and I'm sure air suspension isn't standard either, where as in the X5 it is. Then no 7 seater option and the cheap plastics lower down doesn't help it either. I saw one in VW showroom with no electric seats! Salesman said it's an option!! 🤨 and then there's depreciation. My rant over with the Touareg! Could have been a great car but VW just being too greedy with the options!

Was going to get the VW, but it can only tow 1300kg @ 10 % tow ball with four 87 kg people on board and no luggage because it has very restrictive towball load and vehicle payload, and you can't fit electric trailer brake controller. Unfortunatly the VW is so cheap in the interieur. A 3 series has a better feeling interieur than the Touareg... Stylingwise both look very good. The BMW looks a bit more luxurious in the interieur. The BMW engine is much better than the VW V6, because the V6 Diesel has a huge start delay and a bad transmission software, which makes it feel weak, even though it has 500Nm or 600Nm. When it comes to driving the BMW is also better imo. It just feels more nimble and sportier but isn´t less comfortable than the VW, and it has a rear driven architecture with a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. Then the BMW has still some more buttons left for functions you use daily, like the climate-control and quick-selection buttons. Pricewise the BMW and the VW cost nearly the same (just a few hundret euros apart, depending on the options). So for me the BMW is easily the winner, when it comes to which one is the better car.

I agree with some of what you’re saying but the X5 is definitely less comfortable. I have been in several X5 models and they all rode firm; the Touareg in comparison rode silky smooth. I agree the X5 definitely has nicer materials inside, although from the outside I think the Touareg actually looks better.

I have been really annoyed by VW with the new Touareg advertised as a tow capable vehicle only to be disappointed by the downball weight dropping to a ridiculously low 140kg once you have passengers in the back. This has nothing to do with its payload as the salesman incorrectly told me but everything to do with the rear axle load limit making it useless as a family with caravan hauler. Automatically removed from my shortlist for this engineering design choice! Otherwise would definitely have been up there for me...oh well!

Okay why compare a much more powerful petrol engine, something that is £20k more and being slightly newer. This comparison is stupid and you could have EASILY waited and tried getting the Mercedes or done more work to get it. Or even the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport, Hell! even a Tesla model X... Why not.

Calm down. This was the comparison we wanted to do. Newly released engine for the X5 in Australia, we have already substantially covered the 30d version... and it wasn’t the petrol that made the X5 more expensive than Touareg, nor do we use British pounds, so your market could be quite different. If think it’s stupid, that’s cool - just find another!

X5 any day, and especially the Diesel. Far better looking. The Touareg is just a slab sided van and doesn't stand out as an upmarket vehicle. Same with the Audi's. They need better designers - slab sides and gaping mouths are unattractive. Had 2 X5's and countless other BMW's and never had any maintenance or warranty problems. Keep away from run-flats in any car as they are never as comfortable. The X5 started the whole SAV/SUV thing and still leads the pack. If you need 7 seats, definitely go for the new X5 7 seater. Once again best looking 7 seater on the market. A 7 seat option in the 5 seat version always makes rear seat passengers lose some leg room which otherwise is brilliant. Sorry Tom, you need more excitement in your voice!

I know it sounds crazy but I just hate the Touareg and everything it stands for ! Here's why: 1. It's big but it's not practical - no 7 row option - every other SUV in the segment have it - Q7, GLE, X5. 2. It's flashy and expensive looking but only from outside - this is the most pretender car - it looks expensive from the outside matching the X7, Q7 and GLE quality but the interior is fucking cheap treating you with scratchy plastics even where your legs rest while driving, plain materials, default VW golf steering wheel and worse sound insulation. This car is for people which matter the looks more than the quality. If you want a real luxury SUV and not a pretend one just get the Audi Q7 - it does everything better. Also I hate how overly bright the turn signals on the Touareg are. They are so bright that blinds you and should be illegal. That's just irresponsible !

Sorry but I have to disagree - as an owner of an Audi Q7 and A5 that has just purchased a Touareg. V8 R Line I wouldn't touch another high end German car that only offers a 3 year warranty and is more expensive. The V8 Touareg is easily the best car I have ever owned.

@@pavlins123 Because the Touareg V8 is for my wife and I to go touring - we don't need seven seats to do that. Are you joking? VW doesn’t have a premium image nor is it a luxury vehicle?? There is no way the BMW would be NOT chosen over the VW unless you can’t afford a premium luxury SUV. The materials in the BMW look better because they are with higher grades of leather VW doesn’t even offer or ever use. Laughable comparing the two. What next, the new Jetta R against the Porsche 992??

    • @chasingcars

It isn’t laughable whatsoever. The Touareg rides on the VW Group’s premium platform for a reason - to steal X5 customers.

      @elastotec173 3 года назад +1

If the BMW is so premium why do they only offer a 3 year warranty? Image is only in the mind of the individual - many people regard those that value a badge at a huge cost premium in exactly the opposite way.
