As I am getting older I have switched to Guru pre-tide due to the eye sight and stiffness of the fingers, prior to the switch it was Kamasan every time. Excellent videos Joe, please keep them coming thank you.
B911 f1 for Waggler and shallow fishing. Still using Preston PR456 for general purpose pole fishing as I got a large batch of them before they stopped making them. Preston KKMB for feeder and bomb because of their sharpness. Kamasan B611 X strong for silvers but they are getting harder to find.
Gamma blacks are great hooks, glad they got a mention! I have never had any problems with QM1s, SLWGs, xstrong margin, MWGs, F1 pellet, and the pellet wagg hooks from Guru. That pretty much covers me for all my fishing which I like. I did try the kaizens but had a couple bend out which I was shocked by. B911s are great, I just don’t like the gold finish. The only downside of Teflon hooks is the line pulling / slipping on them easier
My favourite all time hook is the coated kamasan animal hook ( red packet ). The points stay sharp forever and as strong as you like, a proper bagging hook! Also like the Guru hooks. Still tie my own, all eyed and no problems (the eyes are very small these days). Possible subject for next time, classic tackle perhaps. Thanks for your work Joe, have a blessed day.
MorningJoe, I’ve been using Tubertini 808 and 175 for many years now. I’ve only really got those in my tackle box. I have a few Drennan Maggot in smaller sizes. And a few Guro F1 maggot. That’s it. Gone are the days of having of having loads of different patterns for certain jobs. Same in my carping. Just use Gardner Mugga.
Joe, i use b911 hooks for most of my fishing, f1 for lighter work, the standard b911 for a standard day, and extra strong for big carp. I tie all my own hooks up. I do, however, try different patterns and have done so recently, guru maggot hook for silvers and drennan acolite sivers hook both of which i used with good success. I do think the b911 is a very versatile hook that takes many different baits, and as you say, they last the day.
I only fish natural venues and like to keep it simple. For 30 years I've used Kamazan B520 for most my float / pole fishing and B560 for bigger baits, feeder fishing and rivers without an issue. This winter I've tied a boxful of Guru F1 maggot on 0.08, 0.10 & 0.11 hooklengths 🤞
I use pre tied hook lengths all the time at 67yrs eyesight not good. Last 3 matches a 3rd, 1st and a 2nd. I have an a absolute confidence in them. Guru F1 pellet and Preston GP M. I know it’s more expensive but I love them. Going back to last week really enjoyed listening to the discussion on the line.
A year ago I swapped from the Preston PTFE coated hooks to the Drennan Acolyte range (silverfish, maggot plus, carp pellet), but like kkmb and mcm for feeder. The Acolytes are super sharp and retain that sharpness plus strong for the wire guage and better than the Preston hooks. An old school hook I used years ago was a Tubertini 2T, silver worm hook on the Ancholme.
Tie all my own, mostly on Acupower. KKMB almost exclusively for the pellet wag. PC1's for method work. KKMB/H for bomb and pellet/bread. Matrix MXC2 for most of the bagging pole venues, MXC1 for F1 style fishing late spring to early autumn. Kamasan B911F1 and SFLB for winter and silvers. Loving these videos, just never get to watch live, always watch on catch-up.
For commercials I always used Gamakatsu Pellet and Allround. Natural feeder fishing it was colmic nuclear N500 all the way. Now I fly fish it’s Partridge hooks which would make good carp hooks in all honesty, especially the shrimp/nymph hooks.
Great video Joe, got back into match fishing about 3 or 4 years ago after a 9 year or so layoff. Tried the QM1s for method feeder fishing and I can't stand them. Never lost as many fish, so switched to preston hooks that I love, but they seem to blunt quickly. I like the look of the other guru hooks but I can't understand what the patterns mean. As some of the leading anglers tend to use them. Also the matrix hooks. Ie super lwg ect. I'd like to know if possible 👍
Great live chat Joe, as informative as ever, makes me think about what a wide choice of hooks there is on the market, I'll still stick to my kamasan and drennan ones as I have so much faith in them
Very interesting chat Joe. I've not fished much the last five years but in the few years previously I was never quite happy with my hooks for carping, yet back in the very early 2000s I used B911's year round on commercials after being given some to review for the Anglers Mail. I've probably caught more fish on them (and won more money!) than any other patterns yet moved away from them. More recently as I'm starting get back out again a mate who regularly fishes Heronbrook has put me on to the Guru F1 Pellet for F1's and small to medium carp. As for the low diameter/natural venue hooks. What little fishing I have done the last few years has been for silvers on natural venues and I've used the Preston N Series ready tied with no issues - landing a fair few big chub on them with no problems on .09 hooklinks - funnily enough mostly on a mid 90's Daiwa float rod that's been a joy to use! In terms of match fishing on commercials I wouldn't put a hook on I've not tied myself mind you....
Joe I'm still using Preston PR22's in their smallest size 16 for 90% of my fishing. Including soft pellet and meat fishing. Hopefully got enough left to see me through next 5yrs. Use Matrix MXC 6 for banding hard pellet or wafters up to 6mm or guru for 8mm. Use tubertini 808 for bread punch and Drennan carp maggot for single maggot or pinkie fishing
Watched Andy Findlay using them at the Glebe in 2000 he gave me some and I've been using them ever since. When preston stopped doing them bought 1500 size 16's of a guy. Wish I'd bought 2000.
Iv fell out with the f1 maggot mate just find the spade to small, love the drennan silverfish but find they go blunt so quickly, and now iv switched back to the classic kamasan 711s in size 19s, loving them at the min 👍
Pre tied hook lengths for me. I use drennan maggot and carp maggot for live naturals pellet hooks, plus the silver fish pellet for winter expander fishing. I do all my feeder work with qm1s. The only non drennan hook in my box.
Great show Joe, my hook choice over the last to seasons on commercial fisheries has been 911’s and QM1 , but towards the end of the summer I started using pallatrax Gripz with great results .
i am 71 and fished since i was 5 years old and have, over the last few years how the size of modern hooks have got so much bigger. fishing the Dorset i tend to rely on my Kamasans. Keep them coming. Stotzs or Shot?
I switched to the matrix range, Mxc2 and Mxc3 for my carp fishing, after my b911s (std & x) started bending out. I still use the b911f1 hooks for silvers where odd carp is to be had but have slowly reloaded my box with the Mxc5s as these are lovely. As for pre-tied, i have plenty as I went through a spell of cba to tie my own, the ones i use the most, when being lazy, are the qm1s for method fishing and bomb fishing at white acres. Now my issue is that getting hold of the Matrix hooks due to their supplier issues 😂.
Hi Joe, sorry I couldn't catch your video live but I really enjoyed it. I thought maybe shot the next topic, shot stotts, styles. Hard shot versus soft shot and thankfully the shot we now use doesn't turn white on your winders if you use the rig more than once. 👍
That would be good. It would be good to understand why everyone doesn’t just use Stots given how kind they are to the line…do they effect presentation, is it because they move easier etc. would be interested in how shots and stotz compare in people’s opinion
in summer for carp i use 18 and 16 mwg on the pole and for method feeder for bomb and wag i use guru pellet wagglers for f1s i use a old maver hook es43 for winter silvers i use f1 pellets and f1 maggs plus a few of my pr 412 i have in 18s had a few preston hooks straighten on me so want use now
Most brands especially Guru pre tied struggle with demand and availability when the seasons change. It should be no surprise to them, happens every year. I’m then forced to switch to other brands. Matrix seem to be coming up on the rails accept the bands on their pre tied are like life belts!
B911’s,b611’s &b520’s are my go to hooks on the pole As for feeder n20’s & n50’s for me And I do all my own hooks gizmo for the pole and good old black hook tyer For my feeder hook lengths
Just watched your vlog on hooks and watched the one on lines last week. Do you think there would be any advantage to using red hooks and line in deeper waters, ie the stainy as red is supposedly the first of the colours to "disappear" at depth
Because it's a little bit cheaper for me I have n gage and reflow power i use to re do them with but if you nut a pack of hooks plus bayo or qwik stops it works out few qwid extra plus it just a personal prefence thing if i had more penny's I would do I know what your saying lol 👍

I definitely think companies make hook names too difficult with all of the letters and numbers. Guru make it really clear - f1 pellet, f1 maggot, pellet wagglers etc…nice and easy to get your head round the range
Haha I would potentially have suggested Guru changing the names of those patterns. I guess writing medium weight gauge on marketing material is too wordy. I actually have no idea what the Q in QM1 stands for
@@philnunney9372 and it's match wide gape ha ha ha hooks are an anomaly because I agree though they should be labelled as simply as possible. But here are some successful outliers like B911 etc
