    We discussed all of this at Overland of America, I knew you would be happy with the DJI cams! Having all of the Action cam, Pocket 3, and drone footage all look exactly the same is a huge time saver in post.

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  4 дня назад +1

      Yeah they are so much better. My first video with the new action cams was Utah, which is challenging because white balance is about impossible to get correct when the lens, the truck, and everything around them is orange. But they still look miles better than the Gopros would have and it was easier to work with! I typically build my own LUT presets when I get new cameras to make it even easier. So I will be doing that this winter. I usually have one for example: GoPro- In Cab Mid day.
      For most scenarios is works perfect minus a few small WB adjustments. But the presets will have the sharpening, and all that good stuff saved and ready to go.

    Great information! I always like how your audio sound. I tried using the built in mic of the DJI mic 2. Wasn’t great. I think a lav on top of that really adds a lot. Btw, I just got the smallrig potato jet tripod. Game changing for setup and tear down. But it’s on the bulky and heavier side

      Yeah I think a lot of people misunderstand how much it pays, and how long it takes to make money, etc. “I’ll be able to pay this off in no time.”
      Channel income varies, sponsors varies. Currently I’m at around 36k subscribers, and it’s nowhere near enough money to replace my blue collar day job. I would need to be making 5x as much to justify leaving a steady paycheck behind.

    Great video. I use cages on all my cameras now for my work and for my videos. They have saved me and my camera bodies when things have gone south. I currently use the A7Siii for my commercial work and an older weather sealed Lumix G8 for my truck videos. My GoPros have become increasingly unreliable and lock up so just moved to the DJI Action4 and an Insta360 Go. My DJI Pocket 2 has been my vlogging workhorse for years but its showing its age (video quality and wear and tear damage) and just ordered the Pocket 3 with new DJI mini mic set up to replace it. The mIni mic will connect via BT to both the Pocket 3 and Action 4 WITHOUT a receiver. Looking forward to that ease of use. Again.... love your content and let me know when you're headed up to the Lake Superior area (hint hint). It's beautiful!!!

      Yeah, I am done with GoPro. They fell way behind, its sad to see a company that once ran that market fall into obscurity but it has certainly happened the last several years. And on Lake Superior, I do want to make it up there at some point actually, so I will let you know! I know of something interesting that happened up there I want to do a video on...

      For product stuff they can be useful, but even for that these days I don't use it. I can just shoot at 120fps and it looks stable enough typically.

    Great video.. You didnt geek out too much!😂 Been doing this for 40 years, starting with film. Early adopter to digital. Love to do Timelapse and still love still images. Astrophotography is fun and can be challenging.. You really didnt hit on the phone as a camera, which now is very capable. Some people use them as their only camera for content creation.. And yes, the best camera to use is the one you are carrying. Over the years most nature photographers have gone to Zooms because it is easier to frame with and carrying fewer lenses. With the move from film to digital, the need for larger aperture lenses has shrunk. When you are shooting ISO 50 film, it makes a huge difference. Now, not so much. But the creative look is different, and most people wont even understand bokeh but once you point it out, some will see the difference.. Keep creating! Oh, I have had a Part 107 since it was introduced. Now fly a Mini 4 Pro for this kind of stuff but a M30T and M350T for not so fun stuff. I would recommend anyone who is filming with a sUAS to get a Part 107, if nothing else, makes you understand the rules about National airspace and where and when you can fly.

      Yeah I kind of meant for this to be aimed at the new guys. And while I have a fair bit of experience, I know guys like you are out there who have a wealth more of knowledge so I don't want to speak out of school. I did mention phones a few times, since they are better than what I had access to at first by a mile. Movie directors of the 80s would kill for the clarity a phone camera offers these days. Its nuts! Thanks for watching Bill. Guys like you are a wealth of knowledge, I wish I could download some of your camera experience directly 😃

    Very helpful video on the topic. I have a potentially related question that might make a good companion video to this one: What is your process in the field for deciding what/when to shoot video?
    I don't even know if this is a question that can be answered, but let me try an explain.
    I've been into photography for years now, though I'm merely an amateur. There's a different mindset between trying to take a snapshot (what I used to do) and trying to put real thought into a photograph (what I do now, more or less). Considering angles, lighting, background, framing, leading lines, etc. adds challenge but is also both rewarding and makes for a better photo. Now, when I'm on vacation, I actually take fewer but better photos.
    I would imagine a similar thought process goes into shooting video, but there's more variables involved. How did you start to get into the "mindset" of making videos? How do you decide if something your looking at would make a good video segment/clip for a longer form video? What makes you pull the truck over, get the camera/tripod out, and start rolling? What's the thought process?
    It seems better to me to start with how to spot subjects to shoot (and what do I like to shoot) using what equipment I already have before purchasing more equipment. It's analogous to first time adventure traveling. Where do you like to go and see and do? Use that to determine what vehicle you want to purchase and what modifications you want to do in order to get yourself to more of such subjects/destinations. I'm at the stage of wanting to make short videos of my travels to National Parks, etc., for memories and family. RUclips isn't really my goal at this point, just telling short stories to friends and family. Gotta learn to crawl before I can walk, run, or fly.

    • @IndependenceOverland

      I have been into making videos for a really long time, and the mindset is just “that looks cool”. In a perfect world, I would shoot everything in the morning and at night so the lighting is beautiful every shot. But that’s not reality with this kind of travel, and honestly if everything looks beautifully lit for the whole video then the impact of a pretty sunset won’t be as powerful. I would still get more views if I capitalized on the perfect light for the entire video, but I would only be filming for 3 hours a day so capturing stories would be hard, so I just film hard light and deal with it.
      My wife has the proper mindset you’re speaking of, I do not. I just see things that might look cool and shoot it. I typically capture 3-8 hours of footage and work it down to 30-60 minutes of usable shots. I’ll occasionally pick shots that aren’t the greatest, but when it’s all I have to work with then it is what it is.
      You have the correct mindset for this stuff. I have the mindset of throwing mud on the wall and see what sticks 🤣

    The gear is only 1 cog in a large machine of video making and some of my best videos are literally iphone footage. Its so hard to get good shots when out in a group setting because well, its not their channel. I always feel bad for slowing down the group for filming and most of the time my footage feels super incomplete because of that. I probably go out solo just as often and thats difficult as well. P.S. I just got a new wireless mic setup, its a hollyland lark max and its insanely good for the price. Has "safety track" which is basically the same float mode your talking about, saves onboard in -6db. Thanks for showing off your gear, I see a few things I could add to my arsenal.

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  3 дня назад

      Yeah I am pretty mindful about holding up the group. I do a little when landing or taking off the drone, but I run a lot so I’m not holding up the line. It does add a bit of rush to it but just remember, those people may not want to spend an extra few minutes in their truck while you set up a shot, but they always seem to appreciate the final product. They can always have that to look back on. Thats how I justify the very slight holdup I (rarely) cause.

      @@IndependenceOverland My lady wont drive unless we're on simple forest roads. Heck she wont even ride, half the time she gets out and walks pretty much every hill and obstacle. It works out because I stick a camera in her hand most of the time. She wont even go "wheeling" in my big jeep with me but she goes overlanding.

      No sir I have not, but I will be in January. I have no reason to believe they aren't good products. The guy has put a lot of effort into making a useful light. I will be 100% be using them on the camper once it gets here. If I wasn't hemorrhaging money on the truck build right now, I would be ordering them right now too. I would take the gamble, I assume he has a warranty of some sort but I am not totally sure what that is off the top of my head.

    You sir, are the reason I now shoot in log 😂 so I shoot with the Sony a7iii and the solution to switch between photo and video was to create a memory so now when I switch from “M” to “1” my camera remembers what settings i had when i switch between the 2. Only complaint with my camera actually two complaints is the damn audio jack failed and can’t do 4k 60 smh.

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  3 дня назад

      I tried that memory trick and I never got it to work right for me. Maybe the firmware has been updated since then? Thats cool that it can be functional like that now though.
      So my audio jack on my A7iii failed, and after finding that it was a common issue, I sent it in for repair and then sold it. It was kind of a "time to bite the bullet" kind of moment. The audio jack actually failed halfway through my flattops video. That edit sucked because of that. Luckily I had been saving for a new truck, which was supposed to be a 3rd gen, so I had money to dump into the camera and I put the truck on hold. Which ended up working out well anyway. If you need the repair info on that and the cost, I can dig it up for you.
      Log profiles are a pain but your awesome with a camera, and you will appreciate being able to go back to old clips and have the flexibility to color grade them. I still dig into old A7iii files that I wish I had shot in log. I think I was using s-cinetone a lot with that camera. The A7siii s-log 3 is FAR easier to grade than S-log2 is I have to say.
      I want the ZV-E1 now. Its basically a stripped down A7siii, but it only has a single SD card and no viewfinder. But its tiny, and would be an excellent 2nd camera. I am hoping to have that before my next Baker collaboration.

    Great video bud. So, I'm one of those creators that still shoots with just action cameras and a drone. With that being said, I am planning on upgrading my main camera very soon. Lenses are obviously very expensive... so is there one particular lens that's kind of like a do-it-all, that I could buy first off, without spending thousands of dollars? Just looking for something that has fairly decent Zoom but can also do kind of micro shots as well. Hopefully it lands like this exists because I definitely don't have the budget for multiple lenses at the moment.

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  4 дня назад +1

      The 24-105 is an awesome lens. Its still expensive, but you can find them used for 600-800 bucks on Ebay or Facebook Marketplace. I know thats still a lot, but it covered a lot of the bases. You can also consider doing a cropped sensor camera, like the FX30(the baby version of that cinema camera) or one of the A6000 series (id do 6400 or up). These still have incredible video quality, but the lenses are drastically more affordable. You could half my entire lens range for less than half the price. Look up video samples from those cameras and you will be blown away by them. Definitely a good place to start with a "real" camera. I had the A6000 once upon a time and it was awesome.

    • @BuckinLifeoffroad
      @BuckinLifeoffroad 4 дня назад

      @IndependenceOverland ah, I was trying to stear myself away from cropped sensor cameras.... But I'm just doing youtube, and not commercial pro work. I guess cropped is the way to go when it comes to affordability. Glad you switched to the DJI Osmo Action series. They blow gopro away in my opinion. I have 3 and would never go back to gopro. I really appreciate your input man and keep up the great work.
