A great advert for Tailfin. Love mine and impressed with their after sales service. Last year I needed to replace a lost fastener on mine (now 6 years old), a tiny torx screw & part of the original AeroPack/AP20 quick release catch. They sent one to NZ from the U.K., in about a week, no charge, and I'm not a world-famous RUclipsr :)
In Canada, they have a show called "Red Green," in which lead characters bodge together items. Your fix of the tailfin rack reminds me of those projects. I also fancy myself a handyman with unorthodox fixes like yours: zip-ties, gaffer and electrical tape, and seat belt webbing. As Red Green says "If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy!"
Tailfin have always been super helpful and given great support in setting my bikes up for road, gravel and mtb. We all make stupid mistakes such as these when faced by mother nature, patience, frustration or simply crashing out. The most epic for me was crashing out of PBP in 2023 - on a fast descent clipping another riders back wheel (all my fault) - ending up in A&E with a fractured collar bone. Aside from a few scuffs on the carbon arch, the integrity was not compromised.
My Tailfin cracked when its mount snapped in June, I managed to do the last 200km of that trip in 2 zip ties holding the remains of the mount to to the mounting point. They replaced it free of charge and I now carry the mount which was still good as a spare, as well as bits of wire, tape and zip ties. 2000km bikepacking since then without incident, for a total of 10000km with fully loaded Tailfin. (2x ultra durable 22L panniers)
No comments ,other than-Good on You. Love your chosen lifestyle at this time. Happy New Year from a cold, but not raining Donegal. Take Care of yourself and keep doing what you are doing…until you do something different…which,no doubt will also be fun.
the bend on the top is easy to get back in shape, friend of mine had a fallen 4 times in a day on the side of his tailfin and we bended it easy back in shape by just pushing on the bag when another holds the bike... its not prerfect but it almost got straid and he rode another 15 days to the finish of the GDMBR
Thx for sharing details of the ‘break’ and BIKERJAMES’s FIX. Great support from your sponsors !!! Wow😍 Looking forward to your TDU adventures and whatever else you’ve planned for 2025. STAY WELL, you look great. 🍀🍀🔥🔥🥳
Welcome to Melbourne , the heat in Thailand would have prepared you well for the last two days of 38C .. getting cooler tomorrow, Monday so enjoy. Be careful on the Hell Ride lots of car drivers along Beach Road are not too welcoming. Other than that you’re in for a great time.. Enjoy and stay safe. 👍
Welcome to Melbourne. If the weather over the last weekend is what Girona is like, I don't understand why people would want to suffer it. I've heard of hells ride, but still none the wiser, so do elucidate when you can. Cheers and happy new years
Helllo Ollie! Hope it all works out for you in Melbourne and you don't get too roasted. Looking forward to some good aussie content from you Lawrence, should be plenty to see at TDU and around Melbourne and Adelaide, plenty of stories to tell.
Welcome to Melbourne. I’m down in Mount Martha… so many great gravel bikepacking trip options down here, you should really make the switch, so much fun
Love my tailfin and have beem using it for 3 years. Glad ur safe and glad that the customer service is still top notch :) Hope you also post feedback on that new laptop setup for the tailfin. Been thinking if getting it also!
I was hoping to get out and watch some TDU this year, but my health had other plans, and I just spent 6 days in hospital. Hopefully I'm recovered and fit enough in time.
Tailfin stuff is the best. I have their top tube and half frame bags. Couldn't be happier. Nothing comes close in terms of functionality, stiffness and bike frame protection. Support is also second to none.
Just a question.....are the side panniers from Tailfin too small for your laptop? Why you are using a side bag only for the laptop? I thought (thats why I have bought them) they will fit an 13" MAcbook Air and keep it dry (the bags are waterproof). Unfortunately for our bike packing trip in Japan in April I havent found an option for booking only dry weather.
The only people using these things over serious distance are paid to to do so. You can see why in this video or by looking at the product. Despite all the bootlickers.
@@KeatB Infact I've had the main carbon fibre rear rack/bag for some 4 years, it''s junk. eta - actually over 4 years now, one of the biggest wastes of money ever. The build quality is dreadful, the system is flawed.

Adding pole spear to list of required backpacking items.
never know what lengths you will have to go to feed yourself 😅

Accidents happen and stuff breaks, nice you've got some shiny new bits, have a great time in Oz..
Proper engineering 👍 Tape and cable ties fix anything 😅

Managed to avoid the sunburn so far!
For unsponsored people that's a $ 50 carbon repair job, easily done, but it takes 24-48 hours.
Good point, I hadn’t even considered this!
@@bbikerlawrence You should find a shop, make them free promo about carbon repairs etc and raffle the repaired tailfin to viewers mate!

Glad to hear you are healthy enough to get out the hospital Derek, hopefully you get over to the TDU!! 🤞🏽
happy New Year Lawrence
Had a Boardman carbon fork break like that once. They simply didn't care.
Well that’s terrifying

Excited to hear how TDU goes. Enjoy your time in Australia and don’t get addicted to flat whites!

Good luck on the Tour DU

Good advert for not wasting your money on a carbon rack.
I’m almost certain the alloy one would not have lasted 5years of adventures like my carbon one did.
So, aren't all knifes in Australia massive?
Not the only thing that’s massive tbf
Laurence when you guys gonna make a project Philippines? ❤🇵🇭✌️
Definitely gonna get tailfin if I have the opportunity to go bike packing
I wouldn’t
great hack!
Welcome to melb!!
Big up the tail fin ,m the bike and bike touring
Good video 😅
So you’re saying the carbon tail fin is €1000 ? 😢
All the parts as featured in this video are around $1000 (I did the wrong currency)
@@bbikerlawrence Wow, that's f'in expensive. I thought this thing looked cool until you clarified the actual price.
@ on the pricier side but until you’ve used the alternatives out there you have no idea how much of a game changer this setup is.
@@bbikerlawrence The alu version is a lot cheaper and works just fine too, so you have options :)
You're in Australia, mate. That's NOT a massive knife.
You call that a knife?
Hehehehe
You should be proud of the size of your knife, no?

Tailfins are shit and that is a fact
If you've never used one you might think that

Spoken like someone who’s never seen or used any tailfin equipment at all….
