This will be forever entwined in my mind with the Bugs Bunny short 'The Rabbit of Seville'. It, along with 'What's Opera Doc', was my first introduction to classical music.
Looney Tunes performed an invaluable service by introducing numerous kids to classical music in a painless and enjoyable manner and sowed the seeds for more enjoyment later in life.
I was lucky enough to meet Chuck Jones in Vancouver about 1995, or maybe a little earlier, at his gallery on Robson Street. I offered to buy lunch and he accepted, and told me stories about his glory days at Warner Brothers. He was particularly proud of "The Rabbit of Seville," and thought that the cartoon was one reason that th Barber is the world's most popular opera. "The other," he continued, "Is that it is an absolutely wonderful work." Another thing he mentioned was the amount of arguing about just how long the coyote should fall for the maximum laugh, and how big the puff of dust should be. When I suggested that a hundred years would see Warner Brothers remembered principally for Casablanca and the cartoons Chuck added Blazing Saddles, which he greatly admired.
When bugs gives Elmer fudd a hot shave & Elmer goes, "ouch, ouch, ouch, ooh, ooh, ouch".....then bugs goes, "there, you're nice & clean, although your face looks like it went thru a ma-chine"
what any fellow Gen X was hearing.... "How about a nice close shave? Teach your whiskers to behave Lots of lather, lots of soap Please hold still, don't be a dope Now we're ready for the scrapin' There's no use to try еscapin' Yell and scream and rant and rave Thеre's no use, you need a shaaave!!
Why are the first few bars never played correctly? The notes are clearly 4 32nds followed by an eighth note. Yet it is ALWAYS performed 4 32nds followed by a sixteenth. Is this a tradition or too much Bugs Bunny?
Well done. This overture is not only the best thing Rossini did, but is- IMHO- the most perfect composition I've ever heard in my 60 years of studying classical music, and here's my all-time favorite performance: ruclips.net/video/c_v9YCMC4Bc/видео.html
