    I remember liking Tokyo Mirage Sessions from the little I played of it, but the more I reflect on this game, the more I tilt my head on what it was trying to do. My only guess to why the finished project came out like it did was either Company not feeling synergy with the other, so this was a compromise, but like… why idols??

  • @jvts8916
    @jvts8916 6 месяцев назад +27

    I think the original was a case of "wrong place, wrong time".
    Wrong time because nowadays hololive has given a more appealing idea of idol culture to the masses and several of their talents openly admit to being fans of the series. Also because it came out as we were focused on the Fates cast.
    Wrong place because Fire Emblem isn't exactly known for musicals (even less so in the west that didn't get the JP commercials) as opposed to something more niche like the Marl Kingdom series.

    A few things with this game.
    All Switch versions are censored, including the Japanese one, the only one not censored is the Japanese WiiU version (which led to the WiiU version TMS getting a huge spike in sale in the JP eShop when discovered, which was kinda funny).
    A feature added in the Switch version was the ability to get through battles faster, in the WiiU version, you HAD to watch all of the animations play out ever single time (making nearly every attack take over a minute if you're playing the game effectively).
    You actually don't have to defeat Yashiro when fighting Excellus (didn't even know you could do that, since Yashiro full healed himself and the boss the one time I attacked it; didn't even figure out what to do with the last part of the fight and just threw Empty Wave at him, use Magic Mirrors (which you can buy for somewhat cheap), and just have the boss defeat itself).

  • @BigBrotherGnE
    @BigBrotherGnE 6 месяцев назад +9

    For what it was worth, its a solid experience and perhaps more like a decent introduction to the combat style of SMT. I actually enjoyed the themes of the Japanese entertainment industy and how it really causes people to lose their sense of humanity, all due to chasing fame and fortune.
    I judge it on its own merit and i feel like its a solid merged entry. I think when the crossover project came together, it was very hard for them to come to a concept without drastically losing one or the other. In one concept, Madeus was supposed to have absorbed the Knowledge of a god, and slowly merged Tokyo with Archanea, essentially bringing The Hero and Aleph into this newly merged world.
    At least that was rhe rumor before it turned out it was hard to execute.

    I really wanted to like this game and I did enjoy a good deal of my time with it, but it’s just immensely average. Every plus has a con attached. Allow me to go into detail.
    Music: the J-Pop is really good, with The Labyrinth being one of my favorite tracks. The dungeon themes however are irritating by and large, which isn’t something you want to hear when you spent a great deal of time in them.
    Gameplay: The way characters learn new skills from weapons is a fun bit of customization and growth, so you’re not grinding excessively for levels or skills. However, the way Sessions work in this game means that your reward for an optimal team is longer battles. The switch port does have a fast forward button, but that’s really more of a bandaid than a cure.
    Story: There’s no getting around it. The main plot just isn’t interesting. It really burns because there was one very easy change they could have made: have Tsubasa fail in chapter one, and make saving Aya a recurring thread; gives Tsubasa a more compelling motivation, and adds stakes to these miniature episodes. Itsuki’s blandness is well documented. To my knowledge the only personality quirk he has is becoming an incredibly verbose food critic. I think a lot of his problems stem from the fact that he isn’t allowed to have a hobby; he doesn’t watch a lot of TV for the express purpose of having other characters exposit to him about their projects. Take FFX in contrast, Tidus is an audience surrogate in that he doesn’t know how Spira works, but he’s also a fully fledged character who develops over time. If they’d given Itsuki something, anything, to have a little bit more agency to him, he could have been a compelling addition to an already good cast. For all my gripes though, the cast is genuinely fun, and the side missions are a perfect bit of side content. If I were to improve on it, I would probably want to add two-person stories where we see more individual dynamics.
    The bottom line is, try it for yourself if your truly interested, spend a good fourty hours or so, but not at 60 dollars, and not if you know you’ll enjoy other games more.

    I actually really loved this game. It absolutely has flaws and rough edges--dungeons in particular feel extremely tedious and even somewhat archaic in their use of "puzzles" and gimmicks--but the lighthearted idol-story and bright, snappy colors were an extremely refreshing change of pace. The music was a banger, the characters were very likable even if they weren't revolutionary, and the carnage system was really sweet.
    It's not a 10/10 game by any means, but I do think it receives an undue amount of criticism. I guess I'm one of the few people who enjoys both FE and SMT and also liked this game. I did feel like the battle system is where the most homage was paid to SMT--even if Sessions weren't exactly the same as press-turn mechanics, they were obviously inspired by them, and I'll even say I had a lot more fun with Sessions than press-turn mechanics even if the latter are technically more refined.
    Basically, I think TMS made for a great comfort-food kind of game. It wasn't amazing, but if you could check your expectations at the door and enjoy it for what it was, I think it had a lot of really fun ideas on offer. I also really do think my only major gripe with the game was in its dungeon design--I'd be lying if I said their nonsense bs didn't sometimes almost put me off from the game and make me want to quit playing. The manakin dungeon in particular can go straight to hell for how obnoxious and dull it was.
    Lastly, it might be worth mentioning that I played on hard (glad Lunatic wasn't available right away). The game definitely had teeth and wasn't a pushover, although sometimes certain battles felt extremely unfair/unbalanced on that difficulty. For that reason, even if the normal difficulty is a bit too easy, I'd still recommend it over Hard. Or, it might be one of those games where it's worth changing difficulty as you go based on your frustration-level. I definitely enjoyed the Hard difficulty most of the time, but I think I would have enjoyed the game more if I had dropped it down to normal for certain, specific boss battles.

    Well one good thing for me came from it. I got this as a gift for Christmas, and I'd never played a Persona game before. I did play Fire Emblem (just some newer games), so that helped peek my interest. The story is nothing to write home about, but I liked the fight style enough. I've played many rpgs and turn-based games before, but not specifically this style.
    It's what pushed me to finally try Persona 5 Royal, because I figured I might like the fight system in that as well. Not to mention, I did hear much better things about the stories and characters of the Persona games.
    Not sure if I'd recommend Tokyo Mirage Sessions as a starter pack to get one interested in the Persona or Shin Megami Tensei games. Probably just better to recommend one of the real deals outright. Only thing I'd say TMS has over them is it's less complicated of a game. Can't mess up too bad in TMS other than dying on a boss fight due to being under-leveled or not catching onto the boss's weakness in time. But everything worked out for me at least.

    ah yes, the game that was supposed to be a crossover between SMT and FE, but instead took the lamest of persona and a bunch of fanservice.
    and then censored the fanservice.
    I'm glad this game got destroyed, I don't want to see something as misguided as this ever again -_-

      It’s got its fans. There’s a good idea in there, they really should’ve taken cues from P4D. Both talk about the idol industry, and the game is so reminiscent of P4. They should’ve leaned more into that in production and even marketed it with Persona over SMT.
      The mirage powers are like personas too. And rather than having characters look like or just reference FE, they should’ve maybe tried to treat it like an FE AU. An FE AU in the modern era. The personas could’ve been the same, tapping into the old medieval side, but the cast could meet this universe’s Tiki for example

I'm sure it must play okay, otherwise I would have dropped it, but to leave absolutely no impression whatsoever? That's kind of an achievement in and of itself.

    This game having to be SMT x FE murdered it from two fronts.
    I loved what this game was trying to be, and more probably would have enjoyed it if it was its own thing from the start.
    I also have trashy taste, so I could be horribly biased towards the idol culture aspect of the Archanean Persona Idol Game.

  • @tipsy634
    @tipsy634 5 месяцев назад

    The censorship is funny, but it isn't enough to make the game fail. It's not like the game was really gory or sexual and had any meaningful content removed.
    The game might've done better if it advertised itself as persona, but it did come out in 2015. Back then, SMT still had a lot more total sales than the Persona series. It wasn't until P5 released that Persona became a behemoth in its own right.
    The main point of failure seems to be a lack of identity. Fire Emblem is a medievel tactical fighter where you need to protect your heroes from being killed, Shin Megami Tensei is a post apocalyptic cyber demon summoner series (and even that series was struggling), Persona reimagines SMT's Demon Summon mechanic as a Stand summoning game which also acts as a high school social simulator.
    TMS#FE fails to be ANY of these things. It looks at best like a Persona spinoff game, but those are carried hard by using pre-existing characters. This game doesn't do that.

  • @Sigismund697
    @Sigismund697 6 месяцев назад +4

    literally and I mean LITERALLY all they had to do was take the opening of FE Awakening and change time travel for demons then literally just copy paste the gameplay of Devil Survivor, make it HD and Misson accomplished, you have million seller on your hands
    but no, somehow and I really mean somehow you end up with an idol game and somehow your game flops TWICE yet you still have a job and the first thing you do is make Soulless Lackers 2 where you SOMEHOW manage to make another game that alienates two fanbases and appeals to literally no one
    Damn

    This game really feels like they were trying to create the next kingdom hearts; but failed to capture what people liked about the original two series and draw in the planned established fanbases.
    I mean it seems like a decent enough RPG with an interesting twist; but it still absolutely fails as a SMT x FE crossover with the mostly shallow inspiration and references to each.

    Tokyo Mirage Sessions is a great game to me that basically feels like it could be the prototype for a Persona 1/2 remake. I love the gameplay, the dungeon explorations, the added-on social events between each chapter of the game, the use of all available characters in the game itself via the Sessions mechanic, and also THE MUSIC IS BANGERRRRR.

  • @kurtmorales7644
    @kurtmorales7644 6 месяцев назад +4

    I think it was a miss fire, they collaborated with the wrong Megami Tensei series. Mainline and most Spind off SMT games have quite serious themes of freedom vs safety, destiny vs. self-actualization, and a lot more heavy stuff. An FE and SMT still could work, but they added an idol theme to the mix?! It was out of left field! It blindsided the two fandoms, turning off many fans. If Fe Mirage Sessions was a Persona colab then the idol-theming wouldn't be that much of a turn-off. While Persona still deals with heavy themes and subjects, it's lighter compared to mainline, especially later entries. At the time P4 was the main Persona game, so the Idol theming wouldn't be that out of place thanks to Rise and Dancing all night.

    while its definitely not the best game, and it absolutely has its flaws (the crossover elements are... missable, i guess you could say.) i do enjoy the game for what it is and i appreciate that they even made it. they definitely couldve done a better job implementing the strategy parts of fire emblem instead of just adding in characters, and they probably couldve said it was a crossover between fire emblem and persona, but instead its more of its own thing, and i had a good time playing it at least.

    TMS wasn't a bad game. I feel like it would have done better if they'd forgotten the whole crossover thing and just marketed it as it's own offshoot of Shin Megami Tensei.
    The Fire Emblem influence on it was minimal at best. Just a few character references here and there and that was about it.
