  • Drinking whisky and browsing videos resulted in the impulse purchase of a powered paraglider, and I'm now forced to wonder 'Am I too fat to fly a paramotor?'

The struggle is real. We have to be in shape to do this sport. I myself wish I had 40 lbs less. I have to change my life style if I want to be in this sport.

Pro tip, there is a trick to getting it on your back and sitting it back down. Don't sit on your butt, bend your legs back like your going to sit on your feet and slide them to both sides of the unit, slip your arms in the harness and clip your chest strap, rock yourself forward and lift with your legs. tYou can get some momentum rocking it forward and push off your knee to get it up easier. When sitting the unit back down, you simple grab the right hang point arm with your right hand to secure it and remove your left arm from the left harness strap. It should feel like carrying a backpack with one strap. Then grab the left hang point arm with your left hand to secure it, then slide the right side of the harness down your right arm catching it with your elbow. The unit should be hanging down around your ankles by this point and you can just gingerly sit it down without any wiggling or sitting around trying to remove it. I still see experienced pilots roll around trying to get their units on and off their backs when I'm able to just plop mine on and off within a couple seconds. A lot of them just think its due to their age or physical abilities, but really like everything in the sport is just little tricks.

Thanks for the tips xephonism. Sadly for me they didn't work, but I'm sure it will for others. Check out this video where I try your technique.

Remember, Boeing 747's fly cargo and passengers all over the world that are (combined) 20x your weight. You can certainly fly a paramotor if you try hard enough.

As a mature fellow who is also coming to the sport late I know your pain. Being told by my instructor to think about doing more sport as generally worked up a sweat just getting all the gear out in the field. Still worth it once airborne. I started with a scout after seeing Mr Gott making it look easy and 1 expensive new frame later have a 2nd Parajet V3 as it's super tough! Scout is beautiful but my V3 sky tractor is a much better training tool having seem the other students, and myself admittedly, abusing it and then just picking it up to go again. Good luck and hope to see you in the air some day.

I never realised just how unfit the years had made me until my instructor had me running up and down a recreational field dragging the glider behind me. On the plus side, it’s been an incentive to sort myself out a bit physically.

That's a badass Venice shirt. Where did you get it from (and what exactly does it say on the front)? I'd like one. Also, if you've already purchased your motor, that's too bad. You should have waited for the Tornado. That thing will make you feel like you weigh 80kg because it's so powerful.

Dreaklock I got it from a local boutique in Innisfail. It says Los Angeles Venice Beach; Endless Summer Daze. We bought this paramotor for practice. It’s in great nick and the parts are relatively easy to come by here. That way we won’t cry too hard when we break it. We’ll buy something new once we have a few hours on our backs 😃

Yep, the part I hate about the sport is getting myself stood up with the motor on... its almost a deal breaker.
I use a small (ish) plastic barrel and lift my motor onto that, then strap in stood up.
retractable legs on the motor would be great :)

+pimplequeen2 I think a portable table may be the key 👍

An older friend of mine uses an aluminium folding work bench. The kind they use for drywall installation.

A table would do nicely... I keep meaning to fabricate an onboard solution so I am not so afraid of landing out in the sticks for a smoke and a chill :)

I highly suggest you look into this model for safety. Your model's webbing allows your hand and arm to go right through it. Most ppg incidents are due to propeller/body parts contact.
