Moby Grape is a band that could have had the world. They were unique in several ways. Each member sang lead vocals, and they had 3 guitarists, which was a bit unusual. They were managed by a scoundrel named Matthew Katz who stole all of their money, and even the band name. They are still playing today, minus two members. Had that been managed and promoted properly, they would have been huge.
This band was big when I was in my late teens. Despite hearing people talk about how good they were I didn't give them a listen. Back then I figured if I wasn't hearing them on the radio then they couldn't be that good. Little did I know how wrong I was.
The first record came out about 3 weeks after I was born. Looking back, I don't see anything special here. Recycled blues licks, a bit of folk and country influence, but nothing legendary, or remotely legendary. If you look at bands that were contemporaries, like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, they don't measure up anywhere close to those artists (and many more), so it must be something personal that resonated with some people.
@@mgdarenz You were too young to see them live at their peak, but this was a great band. They were like "the world's greatest garage band". It seemed like the smaller the venue, the better they played.

Now Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath are a different story. ;) I grew up in a great time period. 1967- to present day. They were good, but not as good as SF contemporaries like Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead or Big Brother & The Holding Company. Those bands had staying power. MG broke up before they showed what they might have been.
@@billfaulkner548 I was there and into the scene quite seriously. The Avalon was my favorite venue from the Fall of '66 until Spring '68-too many people. I did see the Airplane, Dead, Messenger Service, Paul Butterfield, Youngbloods, Steve Miller, Chambers Bros.,Buffalo Springfield and many others too. They ALL had great musical energy and only varied by form and function. Moby Grape was exciting and put on a great show. In 1967 they were as good and as exciting as ANY of the bands. And considering that transformative musical universe was happening that is saying a whole bunch.
8:05 is a timeless masterpiece, even today it resonates and is beautifully melancholy. Similar thoughts on the bitter sweet sadness of Sittin' by the Window, probably my favorite on the album I almost see it as an end credits song.
a most unique & pioneering band - They came in & went out like lightning - i was lucky to catch them at the Fillmore East & managed to hang with them for the week end - they were definitely a mad bunch & a lot of fun - they left an everlasting impression on me - It always grieved me to count all the drug casualties who fell to the wayside - Skip was not the only one - i was lucky to have lived through those times & not having gotten too bent out of shape - Thank you Lord it was a great ride & bless those times & memories
I agree. I saw almost all of them in that era and I thought they were the best. Only got to see them once though as by 1968 things were falling apart. I did not see them as a quartet, only the original five. Outstanding vocals and rich sound; great song writing.
In my world this music resonates over and over , never changing what I get in my soul when I listen to Mobey Grape . M.B. Has influenced my heart and soul to the core, I was blessed to see

No, more their manager. Columbia's lawyers weren't able to get them out of their Katz contract. Of course, the five simultaneous singles thing was all on Columbia.
The Grape were a great band, but they got a bit overexposed as Columbia released their whole first album as singles at the same time, and then Skip Spence sadly disappeared into the world of acid, never to return totally.
