Fiennes should have won a supporting character academy award
What's not often mentioned, though, is that he did win a BAFTA (the British equivalent of an Academy Award).
1993. And I'm still thinking about it a lot. It is unforgettable beginning with the Argie Tango and the restaurant where the best tables are designated réservé. Stranger Schindler walks into it stalking his prey; the Nazis and the women. He doesn't overplay his hand. He airily hands the waiter what appears to be a generous tip just for showing him to the table but he doesn't look directly at the waiter. He hands him the tip and dismisses him. Before the night is over the top Nazi in the room is asking the waiter who that man is. "That's Oscar Schindler!" cries the waiter as if everyone knows him and he's famous.
Schindler draws them in with gift baskets overflowing with the hardest to find delicacies and his foot is firmly in the door to owning a busy factory full of people making money for him. What could go wrong? The war could end.
Sigh. AI. Ralph Fiennes' name is pronounced "Rafe Fines." Let's get this right.
