I can't believe I just found your channel recently! I'm half of a husband-wife coach-athlete team and have loved watching some of your training and racing vlogs as inspiration for my videos.
As a college miler, my pre-race ritual was as follows:
    - balanced breakfast with sufficient fiber, fat, and protein to last a few hours
    - several hours of cheering on my teammates while lounging under the team tent
    - occasional snacks of the very strange combo of trail mix, cheese-its, and cheerios. Don't ask me how, but somehow in high school I started snacking on this at track meets and that was the year I was top 10 at the state meet
    - 1-2 mile jog 1 hr pre-race, followed by drills and strides with PLENTY of rest.
    - 10 minutes pre-race I would go over my strategy and tactics, have a quick word with my coach, say a prayer, and then let training and instinct take over!

Living in a small town where not much happens, I always have to take the train to get to a race (and I love being on trains, even if it's just for a short ride). I don't know if this counts as a ritual, but thinking about how lucky I am to be able to do this 'pointless,' 'senseless,' and beyond beautiful activity of running always brings a big smile to my face. So that's my 'ritual': smiling through the window like a dog.

You are such an inspiring athlete, Lucy! Thank you for being who you are, picking up challenges along the way and showing that you can have fun with the sports even at professional level.
Pre-race rituals are very important for me too - starting from what I eat from breakfast, what music I listen to when reaching to the race venue (I am a cross-country cyclist so it takes a while to reach places) to what mantra I say to myself, how long I warm up for and how many minutes before the race I take a gel.
Keeping those things in line really calms my brain down and puts me into the "racing mode".

I'm still processing how is that possible that 50m pool divided by that thing in the middle gives you 2x25m pools. Probably magic.

    • @tubbyisnofatty
      @tubbyisnofatty 14 дней назад

The pool is not 50m total length, its 50m + the boom, (probably like 55m) and it normally stays at one end. Does that make sense?

    • @alex31721able
      @alex31721able 14 дней назад +34

So when it's set to be long course 50m that bit in the middle (boom) is on the one side of the pool. So the pool is actually bigger than 50m if it was empty (which it never is). You just move the boom to the middle and still have more than 50m but the boom takes up the extra and either side is 25m. Not sure that makes sense the way I wrote it but hope that helps

Tldr the boom doesn't leave the pool you can just move it. So it doesn't have any affect on overall length just where you position it divides the pool up

I've signed up to my first "proper" event next year - LEEDS IRONMAN 🫶 training is underway and I will definitely be sporting my LCB swim bike run jumper my hubby got me last year!
I predict my pre-race ritual will involve shotting some beetroot juice and definitely doing my go-to yoga flow to get my mind and body READY TO DOMINATE hehe!
Another great video - thanks team. Cheering ya'll on as ever! x

My pre-race ritual is two-slices of dry toast followed by a quick, five-minute meditation to center myself. I then take the time to stretch, listening to my body, reminding it of how far it has come on this journey to get in this moment, taking in the atmosphere. I then plug in my AirPods, listen to my favorite playlist, and tune everything out until it is time to race.

My pre-race ritual after my warm up is always getting my earphones on, turning the volume up , putting on my favourite feel good tunes and having a bit of a dance and shake out. Pre-race ritual: Toast with butter and honey when I wake up...poop at least 3 times between waking up and starting the race...picture how good I'm going to feel when the race is over...remind myself how lucky I am to be able to race...gaslight myself into thinking it's just another training run so that my nerves don't get the best of me. Love the video!

My pre-race routine always involves listening to music-my favorite is still Thunderstruck by AC/DC. It helps me get into a positive headspace and avoid dwelling on everything that might go wrong. Since I approach races more for participation than for winning, I imagine my routine isn’t as strict or finely tuned as a pro like yours.
    Love your content!

Bit of a cliché, but (outside the cold shower, coffee and usual pre race meal) once I’m on the starting line, my pre race ritual consists of repeating over and over to myself the famous quote “clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose” my first coach made me watch Friday Night Lights once and it just got stuck on me forever 😂

I've just started racing this year (in part inspired by your videos) so no ritual just yet except from going over the food/bike/shoes one thousand times.
I can only imagine what it's like having the same ritual for so long, how the body and mind must get into gear when you start your ritual and you know instinctively, you're ready to push 🙌

Love watching you swim race Lucy! I’m still new in the triathlon world but my pre-race ritual involves long, regenerating sleep the day before, white bun with honey and butter in the morning plus a deep self-reflection to build up my confidence. Why stressing if I was consistent with my training and committed as much as I could? That’s my internal voice:)

When I was little my grandma always came to my meets and as her favourite song was "Asereje" she would always put it on and she did silly dances to it in the car because it made me laugh and take away a lot of nerves. Lucy you are such an inspiration, breaking records left and right! My pre-race ritual is sleeping in as much as possible and then having a really tight eating/getting ready schedule to make sure I am a half hour early to any competition. Sleeping in helps me manage my anxiety because I get super super nervous whenever I race for anything. And then being early also helps me see people stroll in and feel like I belong in the space before it's go time.

Pre-race ritual on full/half distance tri is to always think back to the period of my life when I couldn't run 200m without going out of breath. Thinking how far I've come helps me realize I'm already achieving a lot more than I ever thought I would, simply by showing up to training (almost) every day, and by being at the start line. Then it stops being a matter of "can I do this" and becomes a "I've done it already, just need to repeat and execute".

Hi Lucy! I just signed up for my second half marathon in Brooklyn, NY for this spring! I had an awesome time doing my first half last year, and I went way quicker than I thought I woud, but my goal was simply to finish! This time around I want to see how fit I can get and how fast I can go! I have a long runway so I'm thinking I can get pretty speedy by April. My pre-race ritual is a lot of jumping and shaking out my arms and legs (Im also a former swimmer), trying to soak in the energy of the atmosphere, and doing a little bit of a focused meditation!

Agree 100% about warmup and pre race prep in general. When I do a Park Run I still warmup in the same way that I did when i was trying to win English Schools titles five decades earlier. It's the only way that I can focus on what is in front of me and allows me to channel the nerves in a positive way. (Still get nervous before any kind of serious session or "race". Do you get anxious before even relatively minor competitions?)

My pre-race routine includes imagining all things that can go wrong and coming up with a way to turn it into positive and have a solution ready. It starts week before the race. And on the race-day: oatmeal / porridge. Having the same meal 1-2 hours before the start (irrespective of morning or evening race) gets me into the right mindset.

I honestly both love and despise the morning before a race start. I hate feeling stressed, but I also really enjoy being able to let go and trust the work I have put in so far. Usually I get up around 3 hours before the start, loading up with some flapjacks is essential. I then manage my kit, go over the plan for the race and head to the start line to warm up.

My pre race ritual involves some fretting but I try and work on my breathing and listening to quiet music to slow my heart rate down… I try and eat some carbs - toast and butter or toast and peanut butter along with oatmeal and chocolate protein powder mixed in. A banana about 30 mins before race time and some water as well. I also try and remember the journey to the race, the good days and the not so good and I try and congratulate myself for making it there. Thank you for your videos, they really keep me going!

My pre-race ritual/routine is pretty simple. I put my goggles on and take a few breaths, imagining the task ahead. I slap my chest a few times (which is less satisfying with a wetsuit on), and I bark like Joe Skipper if it's a triathlon. Pure swim races have less anonymity, so I avoid the barking there. Instead, I step on the starting block twice with my right foot before the whistle is blown for me to stand on it.
Great video! Your fundraising efforts are super admirable, too.

I haven't done any type of race for about 25 years, but when I was racing as a runner, my pre-race routine was stretching my legs.
When I was a cyclist my pre-race routine for time trails (10, 25, 35 miles for the official events or 8 miles for the club events) my routine was riding slowly to the event and a short warm up, when the event was a super short hill climb I would add 2-3 second max effort sprints to middle of my warm up, which enabled me to get my heart rate up faster as I left the start line (because hill climbs in cycling are super short events it's only 2 -7 minutes depending on the hill).
When I was a Triathlete, it would depend on what the first event, if the first event was a run (in a duathlon) I did running stretches, and if the first event was a swim in a triathlon I would stretch my arms.
But now after over 25 years of not racing and almost zero sport when people say about getting in shape, I respond that round is a shape.

I used to be a classically trained singer, and my pre audition/pre race ritual is the same. An hour before, eat a banana. I take a quiet moment to center myself, and then it’s go time! 😊

For my pre-race ritual, I start stretching the day before whenever I think to do it. Whether it’s during class, during work, or playing games I try to get as loose as possible. Then race morning I usually wake up a couple hours early to have a quiet time and get my head in order. Right before the race I try to stretch out my quads and ham-strings because the adrenaline tends to make them stiffen up.

I'd already made the switch to Tri's when my second call club got in touch and asked if I'd swim the freestyle leg in the 4x50 Medley relay because they had a good team but lacked a decent freestyle sprinter at that time... so I had 6 weeks to switch from 1500m open water swimmer back into a freestyle sprinter 😆 I was two stone underweight for sprinting and down on power but my fitness was off the chart after all that Tri training 😂 Am 60+ now and still do the local Sprint Tri once a year 🙂

Pre-race ritual: always starts quietly reflecting to calm my nerves and lower my heart rate. I visualize the course, mentally rehearsing key moments like a fast run into the water, a smooth bike mount, and a controlled pace out of T2. I focus on my breath, centering myself. I repeat mantras like 'I trained for this, I've got this,' and I always tell myself. Whatever happens out on course this is a celebration of fitness 🐶🐶🐶

My pre-race ritual involves mindfulness meditation and breathwork - definitely helps to calm the nerves 💙🙏🏻
It's great to see your family still doing other events outside your most important races. Looking forward to the next video.

Amazing! You are my biggest hero and idol in this sport and literally the reason I started out doing triathlon. I am an 18 year old German athlete and I just qualified for the IM World Champs next year. So thank you so much for being such a star to all young girls out there. Pre race ritual: Get good quality sleep the night prior (at least as best as I can;), get up and immediately put on compression socks to have super fresh legs, hydrate and eat som easy digestible carbs, get good music to hype me up and try to focus and relax till the start to be able to enjoy the race and deliver the beste performance 😊

Pre-race ritual (beyond just the standard warm-up and activation drills) is when I take about 2 or 3 minutes to visualize whatever race plan I have for the day. Sometimes it's during a warm-up, or sometimes I find a spot to be alone and just role play the race plan from start to finish.

Really love all your videos! You're always authentic and very funny :) I don't race a lot, but if it's the case I always eat toast, butter and honey and I like to be alone and I stop speaking ;) That's the best way for me to find focus.

My pre race ritual lately has been arriving very close to the start time. Nothing more awakening than thinking you'll be late, specially for early morning races 😂
Loved the video, congrats on the records! 🎉

Congratulations guys!!! Not surprised at all you’re now British/Euro champ TBH Lucy!!🙌🏼
I have a whole heap of things I do that is boring & I think pretty universal, but, I visualise the race-particularly the last couple kms & crossing the finish line. I also have 3 songs i always listen to pre race-“whatever it takes” by Imagine Dragons, “Chasin’” by Kairo feat King Kahali & Sha’Ki & the last song i listen to before i hit the start line is “Dare to Dream” by John Farnham & Olivia Newton John. It was 1 of the songs sung during the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. I’ll never ever forget being in that city during the Olympics. I never made it to the Olympics & never will, but it was a very special & inspiring time for me.

My pre race ritual for open water swim races is to wake up early, have a Clif bar and drink my Advocare Spark, then head to the race start. If the water is too cold, I won’t do an in water warmup, but stretch and talk with fellow competitors beforehand. I love the positive energy of open water swimmers and always have a good time out there!

My pre-competition ritual includes eating oat bars with honey, drinking a caffeinated beverage, and staying well-hydrated. I tend to get very nervous on the way to the event, so having company or listening to music helps me a lot! Once at the location, the adrenaline kicks in, and my nerves turn into excitement.

As runner in multiple disciplines, from road half to ultras in mountain the pre-race ritual changes a lot but what doesn’t change is the playlist. I even don’t listen to the songs durong the year to give a extra boost in the warming up the day of the race 😅

My pre-race ritual includes having my usual lucky breakfast, arriving early to the competition to get everything set up and clear my mind, and taking a moment to give myself empowering thoughts, reminding myself to trust in my training and believe in my abilities.

I have the same arm circle, muscle activation series I do everyone before I race. Right before racing I always do 2 jumps and then I clap three times and then it’s go time! Before every practice I clap 3 times too so it keeps it consistent of now it’s time to go.

My pre race ritual is to choose on race day morning what new things I am gonna do on race day... Because race day is obviously the day to try something new.
I then do my transitions at home, and check that I have everything I need. Then when we arrive I run the transitions saying what I do and in which order... weirdly this one always go wonrg and I always forget something like putting my helmet, but it always works out during the race, so ...

My pre race ritual is to always go for a 10 min run prior to getting into my swim skin, or wetsuit. While out on my little run, I visualize my race one last time, say a little prayer of gratitude, and take a Maurten gel. This little routine hasn’t failed me yet, and I’ve been racing triathlon since 2001! (By the way, finally raced in Kona in 2022, and was out on Alii dr cheering you on!)

Really fun video seeing you do these side events, it shows you both having just fun with a bit of fun competition!
My pre-race has been the same since I did volleyball competition 20+ years ago and now when I run and bike. A good healthy breakfast with plain pasta and tomato ketchup with a seasoning of some salt. At the event itself, some good dance music and just mentally imaging how it will go. Seeing myself having a good time and fun in my mind. The results will just follow.

I'm always getting super nervous so I prepare everything in advance and when I wake up I know exactly what to do. Multiple food options are prepared, hydration is ready and then I always allow enough time to settle before the race. I also tell myself constantly that I should not go out too fast because that is what I do wrong all the time. Hehe
