  • IN THIS EPISODE: Popeye the Sailor started out in a comic strip way back when titled “Thimble Theater”, and he became the star of the strip at some point and became so famous that he made the jump to the silver screen in the 1930s. His cartoons were a love triangle between him and his girlfriend, Olive Oyle, and Popeye’s rival, Bluto or Brutus. In all of the cartoons Olive would get kidnapped by Bluto and Popeye would fight Bluto and get beat up and then eat a can of spinach to get strong and beat up Bluto. Every cartoon. It was a very popular series of shorts shown in theaters back then, and on TV afterwards. At any rate, I bought this book back when I was getting interested in getting into animation. I learned a lot about character design and animation drawing from this book. Mostly that to draw characters over and over, you have to break them down into basic shapes. That makes it easy. Give it a try. Keep drawing, and keep having fun.

Awesome tutorial Swinton, I love Popeye. I have a question: is that book "Thr Fleischer Story" by Leslie Cabarga?

Awesome. I will probably get myself a copy off of Amazon or Ebay to study and practice drawing other characters by Fleischer. And thank you for answering my questions, I highly appreciate it.
