Great reaction Steven!! Karen (RIP) was spectacular on the skins! Her feel was so natural & smooth - never overplaying, always in service of the song - but it was still complex at times - much like her voice! Honestly, a truly gifted musician, taken far, FAR too soon!
    Cheers!

Her kit is similar to Hal Blaine's in the studio. She and Hal were very close friends. He rather took her in under his wing at A&M. And she loved his kit! And she wanted one like it of her own. So, he had one made for her, too, and she toured with it. It's beautiful! She ultimately had several kits with one being like a jellybean kit, each drum a different color. Richard still has her kits in his storage unit. I've been fortunate enough to see one of them and also meet him 5x, and even spending time with him in his car warehouse. He's a sweetheart. Very nice and polite, a true gentleman. His wife, Mary is precious, too. And if he talks about Karen too much he'll tear up, every time. He truly misses his little sidekick sister. It's so sad how she passed. And she was so freaking young. Thank you for your reactions to the ever great Karen Anne Carpenter! ❤️ 😊

You mentioned that you heard that Karen Carpenter had "Perfect Pitch". On RUclips, Wings of Pegasus did several videos analyzing Karen's voice using pitch monitors. The titles of two of his videos sums up his results perfectly....
"Comparing Karen Carpenter's LIVE and STUDIO vocals JUST BLEW MY MIND!!"

@kevmodee1866 Karen was comfortable behind her kit. She was very uncomfortable front and center, a few rude comments by reporters and industry insiders about her weight. Started her into wanting weight loss. Remember in the late 60s early 70s Twiggy was considered the hot babe. So body image as a performer was stressed. But behind her drums she didn't feel so spotlighted.

    • @SayItAintSo4real
      @SayItAintSo4real 18 часов назад +2

@kevmodee1866 everything rhondaserges5136 said AND her love was drums. She was very shy and NEVER wanted to front the band. She was basically forced to. And the moment she was fronting the band, her weight issues started.

    Hi Steven,
Wonderful and insightful reaction to this performance! I learned some more details. Thank you. Little subtleties to the song. The Beatles it was Help! For the Carpenters it was Help. Not as urgent, I’m guessing. 😊 It was incredible, nevertheless.
I can’t decide on the version of the song to suggest so I’ll give you both with the merits of each.
The song is Mr. Guder from the Close To You album. It was written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis. Karen was the drummer on the album cut. So it was always her song. She usually drummed on this song in concerts and it contained a solo by her. The bass player in the Help song was Bob Messenger but he was a triple threat. He also played saxophone and for Mr. Guder the electric flute.
The first link is to a 1973 Belgium concert. What’s special is one of the cameras rolls over to Karen’s right side and captures her hands in maybe the best ever isolated video of her in full solo action. When Karen spits the camera (they are NOT small in 73, the look on her face is priceless.
    ruclips.net/video/9wuwLq4MSDU/видео.htmlsi=4TakTylLWvEe2eQS
The second performance is also in 1973 on The Tonight Show. This one has been restored and remastered so it looks about as good as a 50 year old video can look. It is full live like the concert above. Karen in full solo mode with Bob on the electric flute. Facial expressions on this one is awesome, too. These two performances are tied in my brain for different reasons. My friend Harvey did the restoration for Carson Productions. Their full 19 minute appearance is on the Carson channel, it has an opening medley, an interview segment with Johnny Carson and then Mr. Guder. Maybe on your own look at that video.
I hope you enjoy. It’s a tough choice.
    ruclips.net/video/WN6y7RJoYv4/видео.htmlsi=HmML3a3JC6iL7FlY
On a side note Tori & Jim recently dropped their cover of Close To You. 😊
    Joe
    Edit:
Karen was Pitch Perfect, not necessarily the other. Wings of Pegasus showed this and also … Tori is also by his analysis and comparison with Karen.
Also Carpenters covered 8 Beatles songs in their run.

An interesting track to check out is their version of Ticket to Ride from their first album:
    ruclips.net/video/fsgj4xcxXyA/видео.htmlsi=xMtv1iDhm-pKx07I
Then listen to the “a capella” version:
    ruclips.net/video/rFXlJjZJ3Bw/видео.html
It’s not really a capella. Instead, it’s the master tape without most of the band. You get some of the underlying orchestration, with Karen’s vocals. Even more interesting is it includes her drums, and there’s a lot more than you can hear in the regular mix.
Note that in the studio recordings, all the harmonies are Karen and Richard.

There are two different versions of the Burr Bacharach Medley you might like: the 1970 Walter Reed Hospital show, and the 1972 Australia version. They're markedly different from each other, and they're both from before Cubby O'Brien's arrival, so she's playing them by herself. Either way, i think you'll enjoy them.

Another Beatles' song they covered is "Ticket to Ride" which I think is better than this one. Some will argue and debate about Karen's ability as a drummer compared to those like John Bonham and Ginger Baker, who are GOATs, but I definitely agree she belongs on the same list with them. Two of my favorites "singing drummers" are Don Henley of the Eagles, and his solo career, and Levon Helm of The Band.

I have a question for you being a drummer
    When imwatch these older clips
Ive noticed their drum kits seem to be bigger sets then today
Or am i mistaken and just they way there layed out
Also the sound seems different louder and deeper sound
Im not musical at all just how im hearing it
May well be just recording back then compared to todays
Or my dodgy ears just noticed this on multiple different times
    With different bands and drummers
