  • These vintage Hartmann luggage wheels just don't hold up over time. The outer rubber cracks and chunks off leaving the wheel to skip or it all falls off and the wheel is just plastic and smaller than it should be.
    This is for educational and entertainment purposes only. Improper use or tools or repair can cause harm or death, do not try this at home.
    Ive repaired many Hartmann bags using this method.
    Luggage repair kit: Hammer, socket, piece of wood, phillips screwdriver and tool and wheel below;
    ★ Tools: amzn.to/3nIq84D I use the screwdriver on the right, I was hitting it with a hammer and it broke off the plastic, now I just use the metal part as you see in the video.
    ★ Wheels: amzn.to/3HLl6fz these are the exact size of wheel replacement for the vintage two wheeled hartmann. 68mmx24mm. Pop out the new bearings and put in the old ones.
    🚨ALERT!🚨
    When hammering the brass axel out, make sure it doesn't hit any part of the socket inside otherwise it may deform it an will not want to go back in.
    When hammering the brass axel in make sure to hammer on the same side and the the same direction that you took it out. One side becomes a little mushroomed and wont go back in easily if you get it reversed. If you mess up the axel you can purchase hallow brass rod 1/4'' from a hardware store and cut it to size. I have had to do this ones. Once the axel is hit back in, you'll have to hit it from the opposite side very lightly to move the wheel to the center of the wheel-well to get the best spin. I show it in the video but don't explain it. Thats what the description is for.
    Buying something off amazon?
    The BEST way to say thanks is to use our links above or below, at no cost to you amazon kicks us back a small %, its like sending a tip or a coffee our way that costs you nothing extra =)
    Amazon links above or right here - amzn.to/3D87pF6 then search for whatever you are buying. Thanks!

    I want to thank you so much for showing how to replace the Hartman luggage wheels. I’ve just replaced the wheels on 2 suitcases. Your instructions were great. I’m 86 years old and I thought I’d give it a try. Worked great and I can use my luggage now.
    Thank you.

    Thank you for these excellent instructions. I followed them exactly and was able to replace the wheels on my favorite Hartmann tweed bag. I hope to get another 25 years of use out of it!

    I just used these exact instructions to fix a Hartmann bag today and it worked like a charm! I orderd the exact wheels/tools linked in the description and I followed the steps carefully and it took maybe 1 hour start to finish and now the bag rolls like a charm.
    Thank you so much, this restored a really nice bag and now it feels brand new again for almost no money. Your video is great

    Thank you for posting this. I can't believe that you have the exact suitcase with the exact wheel problem as I do and you show exactly how to repair it and what's more, you put a link to the tool and the wheels. Great job! I would have never thought to unzip the liner and remove the entire wheel assembly.

      You are very welcome. The great thing with Hartmann is a lot of the bags from this era use the same style wheel assembly and can be fixed this way. The tool I used comes with a plastic handle but the plastic will break after a few hits with the hammer then it will look just like the one in this video. Make sure to read the extra tips in the description. Let me know how it goes. 🤝

    Thanks for posting this. I own the same bag and have purchased the materials to conduct the repair. My next search will be on how to clean the fabric.
    I look forward to using the bag again. Perfect size for a weekend trip.

    I had a LL Bean suitcase whose wheels were going. I couldn’t get the wheels off. I am embarrassed at how long I spent trying the same thing with no results. Thanks to your video I discovered that by gaining access from the inside I was able to change out the wheels. Project was done in about 7 minutes then. Thanks a bunch!!

    Thanks for the video and links. A couple of items. One of my axels would not budge so I had to drill it out. Use a 15/64 drill bit not a 1/4 so that you don't damage the bearings. I purchased 1/4" 6.5mm hollow brass rod on Amazon. However, 1/4" or 6.5mm is too large to fit through the bearings, you really need about a 6.25mm to 6.3mm diameter rod. I put the rod in my drill and used 60 grit, followed by 100grit, followed by 220 grip followed by gray polishing sandpaper to take off about .25mm of brass. I chilled the rod in ice cold water and it pound in easily with a wooden mallet. When sanding the rod, make sure the rod is thin enough to just fit into the bearing. It did take me a couple of tries to get the diameter right. Hope this helps those that have to replace the axel.

    Thanks for this video. The tool is perfect. I had to hammer very very hard. In fact, I bent the tool several times. I used a vice and/or hammer to straighten it. I started before the tool arrived and accidentally flared the brass tube which made it impossible to push thru the wheel bearings. The solution is to go the other direction, flared end forward. I also ended up using a vice as an ad hoc press - this really helped. Once I had everything apart, I cleaned and lubricated everything. I also used very fine sandpaper and emory cloth to take a thin layer off of the brass tubes to make them easier to re-insert. I used a grinder and sandpaper to get rid of that flared end. I could simply pushed the non-flared end in, but knew that I would forget which end was which next time. My only critique is that I think there must be a better replacement wheel that doesn't require re-using the old bearing. One of my old bearings was gritty. The original bearings say "TMK 608AB" in case you want to replace them with identical ones.

      Appreciate the insight! Great work around for the problems you were having. I couldn't find a bearing/wheel combo due to the various luggage build designs they didn't really have a standard. 😞

    What a great video. I purchased the tool and wheels per your specification and they went in easily. My luggage store wanted $75 to replace 2 wheels and I did it for $21 and that includes the one time cost of the tool. Thanks a ton.

      You are welcome, good work! If you ever have to do it again (the plastic on these old Hartmanns tend to all crack eventually) you'll have the tool already which will bring the cost of repair #2 down significantly. Good work! 🤝

    Thanks so much for this video. Have the same hartmann suitcase which was hardly ever used. Purchased the tool and roller wheels and followed your instructions. Successful repair. Just one word of caution. The yellow handle on the tool shattered creating shards which drew blood on my hand. Nothing serious but could have been a lot worse if shard flew into my eye. May want to wear safety goggles while banging out the metal rod that holds wheel in place. Again thanks for the video. One less piece going into landfill.

      @@thecollegepicker Well sir, on our return I ordered the tools and the wheels as advised. Of course the tools came right away but the wheels just now came in. I was so excited. I had already removed the wheel assemblies and were ready for the wheels. Wow, maybe 15 minutes later, brand new wheels installed in the assembly and 5 minutes later, brand new wheels on my Hartman luggage, rolling like brand new. Your video was so helpful and very descriptive that I had it all in my head by the time the wheels arrived. Thank you so much for providing such helpful information. My wife bought me this piece about 17 years ago, it is the leather model, and I happy to have it back rolling as it should. Thanks again.

    Pretty damn clever. How long did it take you to figure out the bearing replacement size? Replacing the new bearing with old one was clever. If you had to replace the original bearing with a new one, could you match it? My Hartman has the previous wheel and housing, so I'm not sure if the wheel is the same.Thanks so very much for the idea, parts/tools, and excellent video work. GB

    • @thecollegepicker
      @thecollegepicker  Год назад

      I can't remember but I think the outer diameter of the bearing is a standard. Yes I'm sure i could match the bearing, it would take some measuring with a micrometer or some other accurate tool. Probably get lucky if it's the right size first try on order but eventually would find it by trial/error.

    • @thecollegepicker
      @thecollegepicker  Год назад

      I just remembered I believe the inner diameter will fit 1/4" brass rod from ace hardware that has to be a standard.
