I've had "Cemetery Boys" on my shelf for ages but haven't gotten to it yet. I'm hoping to read it sometime this year. "Kindred" made my Favorites list as well for 2022 - thought it was amazing! Was happy to see "House in the Cerulean Sea" included here. I haven't read it yet but I found a copy in a Little Free Library - along with "Night of the Living Rez"- so I brought them home and I'm excited to read them both! "Don't Cry for Me" was incredible! I loved that book and I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel! I knew, at some point, Toni Morrison would be mentioned but I couldn't guess which book. "Beloved" wrecked me - outstanding book but so tragic. I'm currently reading my fourth Morrison novel ("Sula") and, apparently, most - if not all - of her books are filled with trauma in some form. Her writing is so beautiful though I keep coming back for more. Great "Best Books" list(s), guys! Was fun to watch!!!
Demon Copperhead was my #1 of the year, too. What a great book. I own a lot of the books you mentioned and need to move them up on my TBR (I have Love and Saffron but am saving it for February when I am teaching in the doldrums of the school year!)
I love the way you make this as a conversation. Some inspiration here. Thanks for recommending Train Dreams by the way. I buddyread it with Brian of Bookish as a result and I found it profoundly beautiful.
Demon Copperhead snuck into the number one spot on the last day of the year. I honestly can’t stop thinking about it. Just picked up Better Than People based on Joel’s recent recommendation and I’m enjoying it quite a bit
Love the recommendations, great choices. I appreciate slim books recommendations along with the others, really convenient to have in my bag when I go out.
I know what you mean about Christmas decorations. It’s hard to take them down. You mentioned several of the books I have read and enjoyed. Thanks for the great video. I really love seeing videos with you two!!!
You both had great lists! I tend to agree with Joel about rating his books based on how they made him feel. A book can be well written and stand out among other books, but if it didn't make me feel anything then it's hard to truly consider it a favorite. I'm putting some of your choices on my TBR for 2023.
Wow! There was certainly loads of meat on that video this week. So much much for keeping my reading numbers down this year! Upon reflection, I must have listed well over 20, must read books. Thanks must go to you both for compiling such a list that would not be out of place in any national “best of/must read” lists for 2022. Not only have you given me food for thought but I shall include at least six of the books for our book club’s February reads. I know that each video takes an enormous amount of time and effort to put together and broadcast, so, my hat is doffed in recognition of your efforts for 2022. Long may they continue.
This video has double value! Loved hearing your lists. 2023 is my year to finally read Kindred. You’ve both added to my TBR. Definitely The Secret Life of Albert Entwistle and Night of the Living Rez. Wishing you the best in 2023!
Hmmm… I just watched this video again and found that the comment I left when I watched it the first time disappeared. (Or maybe it didn’t load properly and I didn’t notice.) Anyway, just wanted to say great video. I loved both of your lists. You can both consider yourselves influencers because I certainly pick up books based on both your recommendations. Joel, the audio of Now in November is on Scribd. I’ve got it saved. Sharing my top 15 below. The Stranding - Kate Sawyer The Trees - Percival Everett Rebecca - Daphne Du Maurier Nightcrawling - Leila Mottley Don’t Cry For Me - Daniel Black Elena Knows - Claudia Pineiro Cold Earth - Sarah Moss Foster - Claire Keegan The Twyford Code - Janice Hallett The Colony - Audrey Magee The Last Resort - Jan Carson Dear Little Corpses - Nicola Upson Our Wives Under the Sea - Julia Armfield Razorblade Tears - S A Cosby Lean Stand Fall - John McGregor
How weird that the first one didn't post--thanks for doing it a second time. I like your list! It has some books I want to seek out in 2023 and some that are new to me. I hope you enjoy Now in November as much as I did!
Kindred was on my list as well! I watched the first episode of Kindred and I didn't hate it, but I haven't watched any more episodes... They made her single and just dating which added a different vibe to it that I'm not sure I loved.
I'm in the home stretch of listening to Razorblade Tears......the narrator is incredible. He just grips you with the story. The dialogue is brutal and gritty but real.
I read Rubyfruit Jungle this year and it made my top reads. I think I looked for it at the library because it's on Britta's 1001 list. I didn't know about that link with Frannie Flagg! How interesting. Demon Copperhead also made my top reads. I've started listening to David Copperfield on audiobook to go back and compare, it's a really interesting exercise.
Great list(s). I tended to lean towards cosy reading this year, maybe because I've been dealing with chronic illness in the past 6 months and I wanted to be immersed in engaging stories. I couldn't decide which order my first two should be in either, so I put Tenderness by Alison MacLeod and Demon Copperhead as my equal firsts. Then The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell and The Magician by Colm Toibin. I feel like they are very conservative books which is unlike me, but 2022 what can I say.
I'm sorry you've been dealing with chronic illness but I'm glad you were able to find cozy reads to help you get by. That's a good time to lean into cozy!
I am not sure, but has it been me who recommended 84, Charing Cross road? Because I am recommending it all the time. 😂 Either way, I happy that you loved it and gave us a bit of a spoiler there. Happy new year! 🍀
Good afternoon. I really enjoyed this video. There's a new S.A. Cosby novel called My Darkest Prayer. Mercy Street These Precious Days Crossroads
I want to read Demon Copperhead, but I want to wait until it comes out on paperback. I might reread Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn this year. I had to read them for school in middle school, but didn't like them. I want to see if my mind has changed as an adult.
@@SupposedlyFun I started a reread of Little Women that I tried to read as a teen, but didn't like it then. I think as we grow not only do our tastes change, but also our perspective. We can look at the books in a new and different light.
Glad to hear you both liked Cemetery Boys so much, makes me more excited for it! So glad the narrator is trans too! Telegraph Club sounds great. OMG I love that Fried Green Tomatoes is gay now lol I absolutely MUST read Rubyfruit Jungle this year! Thrilled Beloved ranked so high!!
Fantastic video guys thanks for sharing! Joel, in terms of Dust Bowl stories if you haven’t already discovered it, look into the YA book Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. It was the 1998 Newbery winner and is a novel told in verse, one of the first to really break out in that genre. The audiobook is just over 2 hours. It has one of the most brutal scenes I’ve ever read in any book, for young people or adults (no, it’s not animal related), but emotionally devastating.
Wait. Hold up. You guys went to Italy?! 😂 One book that was among my favorites this year was Train Dreams, which probably would never have blipped my radar were it not for you, Greg. And I'm pretty sure you are responsible for all of Booktube discovering Night of the Living Rez, another gem. But. Italy. You sure kept that under your bonnets! 💚🤍❤
We definitely went to Italy! 😂 😉 I'm so glad you enjoyed Train Dreams. I'm so glad I was able to help people discover that book (and Night of the Living Rez) in 2022.
So lovely when you guys are together! It's adorable to hear the cute dog walking. It's so cozy! It looks really like a "home".😍😍😍🙏🙏🙏 ❤️ 🐶

Just came over from your nonfiction video (I missed this one somehow) so I feel like I have spent part of my Tuesday morning with you and Joel.

Demon Copperhead was just a tremendous book.
Hooray for Demon Copperhead and Matrix! Definitely going to get those read in 2023. Love Gloria Naylor and Amy Tan. So good, so good. 🤩
I'm really looking forward to reading more Gloria Naylor. I think Mama Day was the one you really raved about last year and I need to look for a copy.

@@SupposedlyFun Right?!! Why?????
It definitely changes the relationship dynamic. I don’t get it!
I am not a Dicken's fan at all, so I have been avoiding Demon Copperhead. You may convince me to try it, though.
It would be interesting to see how someone who isn’t a Dickens fan responds to it.
Love you both! Thank you for recommending “Don’t Cry For Me”. It’s in my top 10 of the year also!

Absolutely one of my favorite books . Plus there is a good movie of the book with Anthony Hopkins and Ann Bancroft. Loved it too.
A couple of people have recommended the movie since Joel read it! Once I’ve caught up we’ll have to watch it.
